  1. Big Brown winning the Triple Crown would have been like . . . I dunno . . .Barry Bonds breaking Aaron's all-time home run record. (Although the steroid issue is vastly different in horse racing, the fact remains that the horse ran like an absolute mutt today after being taken off them.) And BB's trainer said winning the Triple Crown was a "foregone conclusion" after he took the Derby and the Preakness. That was just sheer idiocy. (Actually, actually a lot of what Dutrow has said has been sheer idiocy.) I am all for having another horse win the TC -- just not this one.
  2. I, for one, am tickled. And he finished last, to boot.
  3. I was wondering about this today as I mowed my lawn. Ned clearly is overmatched and hopeless. But shouldn't the grown-ups know better?
  4. Excellent point about the room at Coors. I had sort of forgotten about how spacious it is out there.
  5. At that altitude, Branyan could hit a ball to Boulder, maybe.
  6. Yeah, right or not, Shields clearly wasn't trying to maim Crisp. He went for the thigh/butt. It wasn't like Clemens gunning for Mike Piazza's noggin or anything.
  7. Congrats, man. She's adorable.
  8. Apples and oranges. The context of the Pujols incident was completely different (in about 15 different ways).
  9. For me, the topper was the paper's disgraceful coverage of the Georgia Thompson debacle and the eventual fall-out. They got completely hoodwinked.
  10. Before the season started, I saw an interview with Jimmy Rollins, and he was asked if the Phillies could have three straight NL MVPs. He basically said yes, and that Chase Utley was due for a monster year. I remember thinking, "Oh, there's no way that'll happen," but it's clearly shaping up that way. (Whether Rollins himself deserved the award last year is another question, clearly.) To top it off, Utley is a major babe magnet. My niece (who is in her early 20's and lives in the Philly area) and her friends basically worship him, and I understand that's pretty much par for the course. So I'm going with Utley here (although I really do like the Hamilton backstory).
  11. My son, who is 3, refuses to believe that there is a hockey team called the Pittsburgh Penguins. He's down with MLB, NFL, etc., and understands the whole mascot concept, but something about "Penguins" makes him suspicious. (I think it is that "Happy Feet" movie.) Anyway, I going to make him watch a little of Game 6, to convince him.
  12. Just saw the article; props for Colbyjack!
  13. I am not necessarily defending him, but, to be fair, you should mention that his stint in Cincy netted a World Series title in '91. Plus, he's had winning records in 4 of his 5 managerial stops and a total of five divisional titles.
  14. Nice tally, FTJ. It underscores how bad the Gagne deal was.
  15. I am not defending Billy here, but wasn't this kind of inevitable, given that he's been ping-ponged around all over the place? Like everyone else in MLB, he wants to settle down into one position and not be bounced around pretty much every single year. I don't blame him for thinking that. Obviously, though, the bottom line is production, and Billy hasn't exactly been providing that lately. If he was raking at 3B, there wouldn't be any question of a platoon, etc.
  16. OPS be damned! The answer is Dave Kingman!
  17. Big time, gonna go down as one of the best draft classes in the history of MLB. 1. Justin Upton 2. Alex Gordan 3. Jeff Clement 4. Ryan Zimmerman 5. Ryan Braun 7. Troy Tulowitzki 12. Jay Bruce 23. Jacoby Ellsbury 25. Matt Garza 42. Clay Buchholz Not to mention some others who have not made it to the bigs yet who are probably gonna be good. Interesting that Colby Rasmus has been scuffling at AAA -- .220/.320/.354. But that seems to be the exception rather than the rule with this bunch. [/pre]
  18. Don't get me started on those too-long pajama bottoms.
  19. Superstar of the future with excellent genes was the exact quote. Excellent jeans?
  20. I get what you're saying, and I'm not necessarily disagreeing, but . . . isn't it just pure speculation to judge them on something besides their record and their play?
  21. If Webb's overall stats sucked and he had lucked his way into 10-2, I might think differently, but he's doing well in pretty much everything across the board, from WHIP to K/BB ratio.
  22. I dunno about the HR. Obviously, the result was great, but he almost fell over, and wound up standing in the right-hand batter's box.
  23. Honestly, Brian, I think my head might have exploded. You're the better man for keeping it together and snapping the pic.
