  1. TH's whole blog posting really made the deal seem more tangible to me. Of course, they could just be "scouting a lot of guys" in the normal manner, etc., but the vibe appears to be slightly more serious (that just talk radio and internet chatter).
  2. "It's just one of those innings," Yost said after the game. So there you have it....
  3. I know, that's the ironic thing there -- he wasn't the one to implode.
  4. So this is what I get for picking up my kids at daycare after the eighth inning and taking them out to dinner. Holy smokes....
  5. What? No people sitting behind home plate and waving all game? I feel cheated.
  6. Career ERA+ was 111, good for a tie for 285th all-time. He also is #1 in walks -- by almost a thousand (!) over #2, Steve Carlton. In fairness, he's also #1 in K's. So his K/BB ratio was 2.040, good enough for 230th all-time.
  7. I was in high school in Balto. when the Colts moved out in the middle of the night. I still get a little mad about it whenever I see Indy play. So I can imagine those Sonics fans holding a grudge for awhile.
  8. But if you don't judge by results, how do you define "better"?
  9. I wonder which stat the pitchers themselves value -- the one statistical category they really want to win (contract benchmarks aside).
  10. He's an interesting case. Carlton, too. They had almost exactly the same career WHIP -- a very pedestrian 1.25. All-time (100+ career decisions), they rank 258th and 259th in that category.
  11. So you're saying (I think?) that the SP's own performance is the least determinant factor in whether he gets a W or L?
  12. Whoa, Mike Rivera at 1B? I hope this works better than when Miller played over there.
  13. believe the hype! He WAS raking in BP. He hit a couple OVER the Friday's Front Row Sports Grill in Left field. If you're familiar with Chase Field at all, you know that is a MONSTER shot. I would be much happier if Rickie spent his time in BP driving the ball into the gap in right-center.
  14. Totally sickening season on the mound. 346 IP! 30 CG! .993 WHIP!
  15. An issue that seems to crop up again and again in threads covering a variety of topics: Can we judge a starting pitcher/manager/team by won-loss record? I almost get the feeling that some people never think it's a valid measure, regardless of the circumstance. But isn't it basically the bottom line of the game?
  16. Let's not forget Bill Hall, who has a lusty .212/.275/.386 line. Rickie also hasn't hit a HR since May 22. (But I heard on FSN that he was raking in BP!)
  17. Girth-wise, the choice might be Dmitri Young.
  18. We pulled similar hijinx at Hansen Golf Course in Wauwatosa. I believe it was the 4th hole. We'd hide in the woods and if someone hit the green in one we'd run out and grab their ball. The better the shot the more PO'd the guy would be. It was pretty funny at the time. Would annoy the crap out of me if someone did that to my ball - since I have so few good shots. It was sort of an accepted part of playing there. You just assumed that you'd have to fork over an extra dollar.
  19. I'd just try to nurse him along in low-stress situations, and have him eat some innings. Torres is making the closer issue pretty easy to figure out, at least for the time being. I just hope they don't force things because of the size of EG's contract.
  20. Right on. It's almost like we're talking about consistent, long-term luck here -- which seems oxymoronic.
  21. When I was growing up in Baltimore, I used to play at this course called Forest Park. There was a long par 5 on the back nine that ran parallel to a huge housing project. The tee shot was blind; your drive would land over the crest of a hill. When you got there, your ball would be gone -- temporarily. Little kids would scoop them up and then make you buy them back for a dollar apiece. The Baltimore police chief was robbed there on the fourth tee, which was near a busy street. There was some question about whether he could/should have been packing heat at the time, but his response was something along the lines of, "I don't think it would be wise for an avid golfer to bring a handgun onto a golf course."
  22. That's probably not fair to Slowey. He pitched his rear end off today.
  23. Good suggestions, all. Thanks! We've done a few these previously, but a couple are new (Maywood, etc.). (And, Hawing, the Historical Society will be happy to know that my kids dig the Wade House. That's already on the list.)
  24. I don't want to belabor this, and I realize the discussion is getting old. But you neglected to answer the second part of my post. The part about condescension and the "can't take someone seriously" question. Because I didn't notice you coming to our defense when those comments were made. IMO, those were clearly worse than the comments that buc made that offended you so. Keep in mind... I really wasn't overly offended being on the receiving end of the "taking seriously" comment. I just use it as an example of what I interpret as hypocrisy involved in the seemingly selective policing... allegedly. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Sorry, but I haven't gone through all 82 pages of the thread, line by line, to comprehensively police everything directed at everyone. I really just have objected to comments that I think have been unfairly directed at me as a person.
  25. Seriously now -- About how many of your 1260 posts would you say have been spent in a forum policing function? And of those, what % do you think were in response to the posts of people that were arguing a point that you agreed with? I'm just curious. For all I know, you're a Ned Yost supporter, and some of us have just crossed a line for you. I think I'm pretty average in terms of invoking my understanding of what the rules are. I hope I am not too much of a narc. I really can't say how often I have called out someone with whom I agree. But, yeah, if someone who was on my side of a particular issue somehow called me a "backside of a horse" and suggested that I might not be an effective parent, then I think I would take issue with it.
