  1. I am conflicted. I don't want the team to lose, but I know that losing would expedite Ned's departure -- which would be for the greater good.
  2. Purely anecdotally, these stadium falls seem to have gotten more common of late. (Not just the sliding-down-the-escalator type.)
  3. What I especially don't like is the explanation that Branyan shouldn't come up because he won't clear waivers on the way back down. Why was he signed, then? Just to give Nashville some patented 3TO action until the rosters expand? And the fact that other teams might want to claim him should suggest that he's got something to offer at the plate.
  4. This is the "injury" equivalent of a guy resigning "to spend more time with his family."
  5. The big question is: What are the Brewers going to do with him? Injured or no (and I am in the "no" camp, too), he's turning into a $10 million train wreck. Is he just going to eat some middle-relief innings for awhile? (I genuinely don't have an answer here.)
  6. Ouch, that is rough. Stay classy, Yankee fans....
  7. No one in this entire thread is going to offer a tip of the hat to Lester for beating cancer, coming back, and then pitching a no-hitter?
  8. I agree. There's still a bunch of baseball to be played. But the Brewers need to get it together, and quickly, if only because there are so many other semi-competent teams in the division this year. (Yes, including Pittsburgh. I don't see how we can indirectly mock them when they have a better record.)
  9. O'rly Tom?? You don't focus on rumors? Hmmmmm.... This is just fundamentally uncool (in addition to being, in retrospect, ironic). There's a way to gently tell people off (not that you deserved it).
  10. Johnson seems to have recovered nicely from the debacle of his Presidency in the mid-1860's.
  11. I hear you. It takes a little getting used to. Not nearly as crazy as Infinite Jest, in that regard, though.
  12. I think that a slightly more palatable approach would have been to say that rumors are swirling, etc., but TH's own source says that no move is in the offing -- all in a single posting.
  13. I really hate this kind of reporting. It's just a sneaky, backdoor way of rumor-mongering while maintaining a stance of journalistic respectability. And then, later: "It could be a totally irresponsible posting by 'Badger Blogger,' which as I've stated many times is a real danger of the Internet." Then why on earth would you report on it?
  14. It won't be the off day (tomorrow). At least I don't think so, anyway. I'd say that a 2-5 swing through Pittsburgh and DC could get him axed on the 27th, before the series with the Braves starts. That would put the team at 22-29. I think that a more likely out come of this next leg of the trip will be 3-4 or 4-3, though. Which means he'll stick around for a bit longer.
  15. As noted already, the Brewers simply compounded their disadvantage today by running TGJ out there to DH. You have to wonder how often it is that: 1.) the DH bats ninth and 2.) boasts 0 HR in 200+ career AB's. It was just a matter of making a bad situation worse. As for the global issue: I am all for strategy, etc., and some baseball purist part of me likes seeing pitchers bat. However, they are generally horrible at it, and I think your average fan probably would rather see David Ortiz hit than, say, Tim Wakefield. (Although Wakefield actually has more pop than TGJ: 1 HR in 98 career AB's.)
  16. In no particular order: -- The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, by Junot Diaz (Pulitzer Winner in fiction this year, about Dominicans in New Jersey) -- What Hath God Wrought, by Daniel Walker Howe (Pulitzer Winner in history, U.S. history 1815-1848, for all of you Martin Van Buren junkies out there) -- The Nine, by Jeffrey Toobin (the Supreme Court under Rehnquist) -- Nixon and Mao, by Margaret Macmillan (Nixon's groundbreaking trip to China) -- The Lay of the Land, by Richard Ford (novel, kind of hard to describe)
  17. Just some possibilities: 1.) Ned gets axed quickly, with the idea that the team, as presently constructed, still can compete in the division for '08, provided that it gets a shot in the arm with new leadership and benefits from a move or two (for, say, another starting pitcher). 2.) Ned twists in the wind for awhile, perhaps until the All-Star break, and then gets axed when it's clear that the entire season is irrevocably down the tubes. There is some roster tweaking at the trade deadline (maybe for the requisite Ranger cast-off), but nothing major. There's a general sense that the team suffered from bad luck in '08, and that the core is still good enough to contend in '09. 3.) Ned twists in the wind for awhile, perhaps until the All-Star break, and then gets axed when it's clear that the entire season is irrevocably down the tubes. The team sells rather than buys at the trade deadline -- maybe even by moving Sheets for a slew of prospects. (They might even give up on Rickie at this point.) Mark A. also breaks out the checkbook in the offseason for some free agents. We're talking major overhaul here. 4.) The team muddles along and is respectable enough for Ned to keep his job until October. The roster remains generally set. I could see any of these things happening, really.
  18. CNN reports that Ted Kennedy is awake, alert, and watching this game on NESN. So I'm happy that it's at least bringing joy to someone in need.
  19. During the rain delay, FSN ran that piece on Braun, and what interested me most was the side-by-side shot, with Braun's swing mirroring Prince's. The contrast was really striking -- compared to Braun, who was really balanced and fluid, Prince almost looked like a guy swinging from the heels with a massive uppercut in a beer league softball game. To me, that's probably the most significant difference between the two, not attitude.
  20. We kept hearing that Kendall couldn't throw guys out, and that he was a DP machine. So he's exceeded expectations in both regards. I just hope he holds up in Sept. -- it seems like he's behind the dish for every game.
  21. I agree. Some here lament scheduling, the umps, and Rickie's alleged bad luck, among other things, while claiming that the gods are smiling on the Cards and Cubs. But I don't think it's a matter sheer bad fortune that the Brewers have fallen behind this year. They just aren't playing great baseball.
  22. Yes, a fan. Gives fans a chance to occasionally see different teams rather than the same old, same old.
  23. Jimmy Fallon is remarkably un-funny.
  24. I'm still not convinced. He was a different pitcher, velocity-wise, in his closing heyday. And what's probably tough on him psychologically is that he knows that, too. I think he might still be able to muddle along decently with what he's got, but I don't think he's going to be consistently above-average.
