  1. They may cheat, but they have an absolutely gorgeous campus. I was there in April for a conference, and I kept muttering to myself, "Must train son to play football for Pete Carroll . . .must train son to play football for Pete Carroll . . ."
  2. I believe that he hasn't broken a bat while swinging in his entire career.
  3. But does he have Brooksie's hops? (See avatar.)
  4. I agree that the biggest problem is overall lack of offensive mojo rather than Ned. But . . . 1.) I don't think that Kendall is so pathetically bad at the plate that you have to bunt in that situation, especially with only one out, the bases loaded, and the top of the order coming up after him. 2.) I don't think you have to put in Gagne simply because he has been warming up. (Really, you just don't warm him up in the first place, given his obviously shortcomings recently in close games.)
  5. Well, as long as Jason Kendall doesn't ground into any double plays this year, you have to consider the season a success.
  6. I dunno about the SS call. If he hadn't done it, how many of us would have said, "Oh, that was an obvious squeeze situation?" (I wouldn't have.)
  7. Jack-of-all-trades higher ed academic type (teach, advise, write books, scrub floors)
  8. Yeah, he overreacted. The pitch was up, certainly -- and it really would have to be up to be chin-level with Richie -- but it actually might have been over the inside corner. I think he was just waiting to be brushed back.
  9. You know, this very thought crossed my mind last night. Not a totally insane concept -- he has started previously (as mentioned above).
  10. I guess it depends on which reaction you mean. I do think it's premature to consider the entire season hopeless. There's just waaaaayyyy too much baseball still to be played. At this point, a good, solid week could put the Brewers right back in the thick of things. But I don't think it's too early to be considered about an all-around lackluster performance, which comes on the heels of last season's second-half meltdown. The fact is, the team just hasn't played well in awhile. I can't really be encouraged by that.
  11. Actually, this wouldn't surprise me one bit. I would make me cringe, but it wouldn't surprise me.
  12. My favorite. In 13 seasons, finished first or second 11 times. Was a winner in all four places he managed. .564 winning percentage, which is better than La Russa. (He's been out since 2000, though, which leads me to believe that his MLB days are done.) After 3 straight fiascoes with rookie managers, I hope the next pick is someone with a track record. I see a consensus emerging about the BoSox series....
  13. I really wish that Rickie's flashes of power weren't so . . .flashy. In a weird way, I would have been happier to see him hit a gapper to right-center last night.
  14. Yeah, J.J. was the first thing that popped into my head when I read that sentence.
  15. I will start thinking about a timetable when I start reading "Is Brewers' Yost on the hot seat?" stories bubbling up in the JS and then rippling out toward the national media. (Or have they started already?) I do think that these things have a way of progressing from hard-core folks (read: us) toward the mainstream media and then becoming conventional wisdom. That's when Ned will really have to start to worry. I don't see it happening for at least another month, though -- unless the wheels really fall off the cart in the next couple of weeks.
  16. Paul Bako (!) now has as many HR as Prince. That is one bad month-plus, in terms of power numbers....
  17. Mothership, I have been staring at your avatar for weeks now, and it finally dawned on me. Duh.
  18. Fielder v. Berkman might be slightly apples v. oranges, because of the age difference. But I'm not going to sneeze at LB's career 148 OPS+ v. Prince's 129, or the superiority of Berkman's glove. The dude can play. (I think if you look at LB's first 3 full seasons in the majors, his overall numbers were comparable or even superior to what Prince's will be. Prince might not even significantly out-HR him over that span. LB hit 21, 34, 42 [for a total of 97], and Prince has hit 28, 50, 4+ [for 82 and counting].)
  19. The Marlins must have a secret manual on dismantling and rebuilding. They've got some nice players.
  20. Am I right to assume we cant trade Laporta yet? Or did the date pass. I thought we had to wait until the next upcoming draft. I know that you're not necessarily advocating trading LaPorta, merely mentioning the possibility, but I wouldn't part with him for a closer.
  21. I think, too, that we're dealing with expectations here. After surmounting the .500 barrier, the overall expectation for the Brewers -- among fans, players, management, the media -- is the post-season. Anything less than that will be a significant disappointment, and Ned will shoulder the blame. Whether it's "fair," in an absolute sense, is almost irrelevant here. The fact is, managers get canned when there is a perception that their teams are underachieving. They become the fall guys.
