    I have a convoluted opinion about all of this. I've never been a Ned fan, but I don't think he's primarily responsible for the team's recent woes. (I'd put his badness pretty far down the list of the team's problems.) And yet I think it's possible that he might get the boot, depending on what happens over the next couple of months, especially if the team is floundering by the All-Star break (say, 5+ games below .500). I think DM could easily say, "We thought we had all of the pieces in place, but we're not performing up to expectations, etc., etc." Do I think it's likely? No. He's DM's horse, and he's probably going to get ridden for awhile yet.

    This is less a vent and more a lament. It genuinely saddens me to see how many people here apparently don't really enjoy watching baseball very much. I swear, every other post seems to be about "hating" something with white-hot passion: the umps and their obvious conspiracy against our poor team! The Cubs and their horrible, arrogant fans! FSN and its criminally bad production! The manager! Innumerable current and former players who are/were not worth their contracts! ESPN and its insidious East Coast bias! Other BF.net posters who don't share my appreciation for some obscure stat! And on and on . . .

    I'm baffled that so many people are ready to give up on a team that's over .500 on May 3.

    There's also a great "Cheers" episode in which Norm becomes his company's designated fire-er (largely because he gets so emotional that the fired employees feel badly for him). Google tells me that the episode was "The Executive's Executioner" and aired on 3/7/85.

    From what I've seen/read, it's sort of an open question as to whether the 911 should/could have dispatched someone in time to have made much of a difference. (I don't know enough about the tech and dispatch issues to offer much insight there.) What is beyond dispute, however, is that the handling of this has been an absolute PR debacle for Dane County and the city. The call itself was only disclosed after The Isthmus broke the story, and, even then, the county official involved in overseeing 911 operations seemed offended that anyone would have the audacity to question how the call had been handled. What's more, when asked if the dispatcher in question had returned to his/her regular duties, he said yes -- when it turns out, in fact, that this person had been reassigned. Basically, he seems to be stonewalling. What makes this even worse is that we have had at least three notable unsolved murders over the past year. I think it's mainly just bad luck, but the police just don't seem to be making much progress on any of them.

    It's not Siberia. I'd probably rather live there than someplace further west in Iowa. And you've got UNI, so there's decent I-AA (oops, I mean Football Championship Subdivision, or whatever the heck it's called) football and MVC hoops.

    I think erring on the side of caution might have been the wisest move here, especially given who the injured player was. Why chance it?

    What I thought was interesting was the "10" ranking for fan IQ for Miller Park. Are we in the top third? (Not suggesting one way or another, just wondering.)

    I read a pretty extensive article on the investigation, and I'm no more convinced than I was before that there is a gang out there.

    It could have been worse, right? I guess I am encouraged that (as of this writing) his arm seems ok. The wildness did seem a little weird, though. I understand "rust," etc., but it's not like he missed two months between starts.

    I haven't been following closely, so forgive me if this has been answered, but: When, exactly, are authorities finding these smiley faces? If it's immediately after the death/disappearance, then I suppose there could be something to it. But if you go back weeks or months later, it could be anything. (I mean, I could visit all of these sites and paint a big scarlet Rutgers "R," but that doesn't mean I'm running an RU gang and killing people.)

    Realistically, I think they have to be gunning for a respectable, .500-ish 3rd place finish. (I have to say, though, that I would be absolutely overjoyed if they managed to win that division. Probably not gonna happen, though.)

    Yeah, I'm not hitting the panic button just yet. Still lots of baseball to be played -- and played against inferior teams.

    Yeah, I am not penciling Ben in for 30 starts just yet. It's good that he's going to be back out there on Tuesday, but I can't say that I'm convinced that he's 100% right.

    I'm not sure I can fathom criticizing Helms for his alleged lack of class by calling him a fat idiot.

    Wrong though he might have been about Jenkins in particular, I think he was generally right about the booing of former Brewers (a subject to which many a thread here has been devoted). And he pretty much got the last laugh this weekend.

    It looks as though I will be doing a one-year stint teaching at UW-Oshkosh in 08/09. I'd appreciate any thoughts/opinions/words of wisdom from current students or alumni about the student body, overall campus climate (and by that I mean the vibe, not the weather), facilities, etc. Tell me anything.

    Is 14 pitchers (on the 25-man) an official all-time MLB record? Does Elias keep track of such things? Whatever the case, it's borderline absurd.

    Precisely. This isn't vestibular neuritis (or whatever the inner-ear thing is called). And it's April, still, so it has the potential to loom over the entire season, more or less.

    Actually, I am glad that someone started this thread. After seeing Moeller behind the dish for the Yankees (and nearly having my head explode) and seeing Figueroa's gem for the Mets (and nearly having my head explode), I got to thinking that there seem to be quite a few ex-Brewers floating around this year. Of course, there have been, always will be, former Brewers floating around. It's probably just a fluke that I've noticed so many this year.

    On the one replay, the ball wasn't even the frame of the picture when he reached the bag. That was just total brain-lock.
