  1. It's a fine line. If there's general puzzlement and you can clear it up succinctly (as you seem to have done with the WHIP issue), then I think it's great. You're just being friendly. However. . . I've been to a couple of ballgames where a person behind me has more or less invited himself to offer an ongoing critique of my conversation. As in, not just jumping in to resolve a factual question/dispute, but wanting to argue pretty much everything, in order to prove he was some kind of baseball savant. That's less cool.
  2. Figgy's first win since 2003, I believe. He's pacing himself, apparently.
  3. As of April 18, 2007, Prince Fielder had exactly one home run. As of April 17, 2006, Prince Fielder had exactly one home run. So, basically, if he goes deep this weekend, he'll be right on pace.
  4. Yeah, I'm much more of a big-picture booer, too, especially if it's an ongoing effort/hustle/demeanor issue.
  5. You'll have to fight me for him. He's been great so far. No complaints.
  6. I was thinking this as well re: the Cameron suspension. It's almost1/3 over already, and the team isn't exactly suffering.
  7. I wouldn't say "on edge," but I think there is concern. We've had year-long murder-free stretches since I moved here (in 1997), and now we've had several, and the cops can't seem to figure them out. I am not going to grumble about the incompetence of the police department; I know that it can take awhile to figure these things out. (We're spoiled by TV, where crimes get solved in an hour or less.) But they seem a little overmatched by these crimes. I hope it's just a matter of time and diligence.
  8. I was thinking the same thing. It's a lot simpler, and less chance of breakage.
  9. I thought that you had to have some kind of birth or parental tie if you wanted to play for another country, but, apparently not. It's just weird to me that you would want to represent another country (unless you had serious "adoptive" feelings for it, but then you would switch citizenship).
  10. This won't last forever, but they looked dreadful in that game last night vs. the White Sox. (Guillen just flat-out dropped an easy throw at first, etc.) Am I remembering right? Did Kurkjian say on an ESPN season preview that he thought they might have an historically great offense, and perhaps score1,000 runs? If so, they going to have to mash the rest of the way.
  11. Also note the pristine white uniform. Almost seems too obvious, though.
  12. I hate stuff like this. It's as though he thinks he's a magnanimous guy for admitting that he's a liar -- five years after the fact. According to the story, Alou said immediately after the game: "I timed it perfectly, I jumped perfectly. I'm almost 100 percent that I had a clean shot to catch the ball. All of a sudden, there's a hand on my glove." At the time, I guess it was easier to point the finger at a fan than at his teammates for choking.
  13. Lots of schools are salivating over Anthony Grant. Marquette is going to have to wait in a pretty long line there.
  14. No, but I did see Tippy Martinez retire the side on three pick-offs.
  15. Admirable restraint, I'd call it. (Or maybe we just haven't gone back and looked at the IGT?)
  16. It was ok, I think. She referenced this Oklahoma case and insisted that it was a U.S. Supreme Court case and thus the law of the land, applicable everywhere. It really wasn't (the Court refused to hear the case, basically), and everyone else on the show, me included, tried to tell her that she was wrong. But she didn't totally berate me, so I'm going to consider myself lucky!
  17. Yeah, sorry -- March 31, tonight, Monday. Will I get a BF.net Purple Heart if I survive this show? That's what I want to know.....
  18. If I had my choice, I would be watching the Opening Day marathon on ESPN, but if you have the urge to surf . . . I will be talking about this stuff on the CNN "Nancy Grace" program on Monday, March 30, between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
  19. Let's hope Ben remained loose during the delay....
  20. I also think there's a difference between what you can do and what you should do. Certainly, there isn't a law against booing the President, or the home team, or the mascot, or a little kid who botches the National Anthem. But, generally, I think there are moments in our lives when -- for the greater good -- we should exercise some discretion and perhaps not verbalize every emotion that pops into our brains. (Also, I think that booing is often mainly an attention-getting mechanism for the fan -- a way to say, in effect, "Hey, look at me!")
  21. It might have been in another thread where someone mentioned the problem with intentionally running the clock down all the way (in order to have the final shot in a half or game) and then having to hurry a shot. I don't blame Davidson for not wanting to give the ball back to Kansas with a couple of seconds left, but . . .I'd much rather have a good shot with 4 seconds left than an off-balance 35-footer with 1 second remaining. Easy for me to say, though, from the comfort of my couch.....
  22. I agree, I would have applauded politely. Booing was totally in appropriate...but you know the fans, "they paid for their ticket, they can act however they please" Next thing you know Ryan, with the boo mentality being tossed around today, it will now be ok to stand and boo at a soldier's funeral. Because their hard money went to tax dollars to pay the soliders salary. And because they came home deceased, they didnt try hard enough or perform to standards. Believe it or not, members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church do precisely this, although for somewhat different reasons. (I won't go into the particulars here, because it enters all sorts of verboten territory in terms of religion, politics, and sexuality.)
  23. Yeah, if you're anti-GWB, I think the proper thing is to applaud politely, but not enthusiastically. Full-throated booing is just uncool, especially when you're opening your new park and generally looking to have a fun time.
  24. Or booing the throw to a base because you think any move by the pitcher other than a pitch is a balk. Especially the spin-but-no-throw to second base. (Easily a Top Five pet peeve of mine, baseball-wise.)
  25. I am not really bothered by the Davidson hype. (But, my god, if they beat Kansas and make the Final Four, I might have to revisit that statement.)
