  1. I laughed (then cringed) when I read this bit, too. "Dated"?
  2. I live in Madison, and just randomly took my kids to the Kohl Center to see one of the WIAA hoops title games today. We wound up watching Benton v. Assumption in Division IV. I really am not familiar with either school, but we would up sitting in the Benton section, so I told my kids that we had to root for "the green team." From talking to some people sitting around us (who seemed pretty happy to have extra fans on hand), we wound learning some interesting stuff about Benton. I know that all of the schools in this division are tiny, but I didn't realize that this student body of this school is 86. (I teach a single course this semester with more than twice that many kids.) Basketball is the only winter sport for boys. I think pretty much the entire town was in the Kohl Center for the game. Pretty cool for them to win the title.
  3. But wasn't there a "Seinfeld" bit about Mr. Peanut? That's what I immediately thought of. The whole episode seemed a little derivative, in some way.
  4. And what's with the basement prison motif? Are we to believe A-Rod is being held against his will (presumably by Brian Cashman)?
  5. He's probably not even in the Dartmouth College hall of fame, if there is such a thing.
  6. Even if it's just a mild tweak, it does suggest that he might be nagged by it for awhile as the season wears on.
  7. Well, I was wondering the same thing, Tom Haudricourt (per blog this morning): "Is Ryan Braun experiencing the same ribcage/intercostal problem that plagued him at the end of last season? Brewers GM Doug Melvin obviously is nervous...." (edit: added link --1992)
  8. It's not a positive, whatever it is. Hopefully nothing too major, though.
  9. I listened for awhile this afternoon while driving from Monroe to Madison. He was decent; it wasn't anything intolerable. But somehow Provus just seemed really dull to me. Granted, it's the Cactus League and not Game Seven of the World Series, but he didn't manage to say anything interesting or particularly insightful over the course of several innings. And he seemed to totally skip around from topic to topic without adding any depth. For instance, he mentioned the WBC, and the U.S. losing to Puerto Rico. But then he was off to something else (the parking lot of the Indians' AZ ballpark, etc.). If the format had Uecker calling simultaneously along with him as a color guy, I think it would be fine. But solo? I think it's going to be kind of dull.
  10. I agree, basically. At this point, I'd be content with average offensive and average defense, but he's not even providing that -- yet. For all my impatience with him, I do realize that he's still relatively young. I don't think you can just write him off at age 26.
  11. That's what's so maddening. His "potential" runs the gamut. He could break out this year, or he could slump horribly, or he could just be Rickie-esque. I just don't know.
  12. I tend to think that if Braun could figure out the basics of MLB LF in one season, Rickie might be able to hack it in RF. I doubt he'd wind up being more of a defensive liability than he is right now at 2B. I suppose the real issue would be his production at the dish. Is he putting up legit corner OF numbers?
  13. This is the best suggestion so far, in my opinion. The over-use of this song in "The Brothers Solomon" was an extremely funny component of an otherwise OK movie. I was recently in an electronics store, and they had a Michael McDonald concert DVD going -- just like "40 Year Old Virgin." I mentioned this to the sales guy, and he looked at me as if I was from Mars.
  14. It doesn't seem like such a bad group to me, overall.
  15. I am not sure if this is the right comparison (because the stakes are smaller in the WBC), but this is a little bit like the Miracle on Ice -- twice in one week. (I like that "NL" hat, too. I might have to get me one of those.)
  16. I'm disappointed that Tom wrote a blog post about this (although I'm MUCH more disappointed that Keith Law stated the stuff Escobar's wife emailed out as fact). The whole thing seemed odd to me. He claimed that the paper doesn't really concern itself with essentially non-baseball personal issues, etc. I completely agree with that -- especially in this case, when there appear to some credibility/objectivity issues involving the player's estranged wife. But then why in the world would he devote an entire blog posting to it? It just adds fuel to a story that the he claims to think is a non-story. And could the headline be any worse? "Law talked to Escobar's estranged wife" sounds like she was interviewed by the police about something. (Honestly, that's what I thought I when I saw it.)
  17. Another minor blog fiasco today for TH regarding Escobar's supposed marital problems. Yikes.
  18. Unreal. These guys are awesome. I've been pleasantly surprised by these games. I thought that they would be much less competitive.
  19. With 3B and (somewhat?) 2B being so unsettled, it seems as though there should be a way to play -- and pay -- both Hardy and Escobar. I'd hate to see JJ dealt and then maybe have an infield of: temporary void (3B), legitimate potential (Escobar at SS), unrealized potential (Weeks at 2B), and free-agent-to-be (Fielder at 1B). That would be a mess.
  20. When I say the title of this thread, I thought it was going to be about Kendall saying that Gallardo was going to win 3 Cy Young awards.
  21. Oh, I totally agree that TH is right, and that the guy is a jerk. But it just baffles me that Tom gets gets so worked up over this kind of stuff (which really was relatively mild -- and accurate -- criticism). I mean, we're barely into spring training; how's he going to make it through until October without having a complete meltdown?
  22. It might very well not be him. But the tone sounds kind of similar to the exchanges from last year (when he published that dude's email address) that earned him a vacation from blogging. (But who knows? It could be somebody just trying to make him look like a crybaby.) Edit: But now I do think it's actually him. Here's another posting: "You guys are all right about Hornsby, so this will be my last word on him. My point is that the negative nonsense gets old. If you make a typo, he crushes you. If you make a post he thinks is not relevant, he crushes you. It's all he lives for. I just don't get the negativism. It's all he has going for him. It's like the boy who cries wolf. You get tired of hearing about it. Critical comments and differences of opinion are what make blogs go 'round. That's a different thing. But just to continually take shots with never a constructive word or decent thought, I just don't get. How can you be so angry and bitter? It's just baseball, and we're trying to get out info on the club that people might want. There's an old saying: "It's always the same guys." And with Hornsby, that adage is so true. If you want a negative, wise-guy remark, you can always count on him. And, with that, I'm done talking about the guy. As all of you non-hateful folks have noted, it's not worth losing any sleep over."
  23. I don't typically read the comments for Haudricourt's blog posts, but the following two -- apparently made by Tom himself -- really caught my eye, especially because of last year's fracas. (They followed the blog entry for "Early Exit for Gallardo.") Apparently, a poster ID'd as "Hornsby" tweaked TH for misspelling "walk" as "wall." Here's how Tom responded: At 4:56 p.m.: "Hornsby, I also am just curious. Why do you NEVER have anything to say but critical, negative, wise-guy remarks? You must be a miserable, hateful person. Hey, of the several hundred words I filed in blogs today, I had a typo in one word. Get over it. And try for just one second in your life to be positive. You'd be amazed how good it feels." At 5:11 p.m.: "Yeah, Gagne being released and the most talented pitcher on the staff getting shelled in one inning isn't relevant at all, is it? If you don't like my posts, don't comment on them. All of those who want information on the club -- unlike you -- would be more than pleased if you'd vacate the premises. You add nothing but venom. That says all we need to know about you. Like I said, you must be a miserable, hateful person. All you want to do is attack people. What a great way to go through life. Congratulations." I imagine that this could be a troll posing at TH, so I don't want to necessarily call him out for having overly thin skin.
  24. Do we have an all-purpose WBC thread? And where should it be (since it's not officially MLB)? (I want to show some love for Yurendell de Caster and the rest of the Dutch squad.)
  25. Did they include the little chain things at the ends of rows to keep you in your seat during "God Bless America"?
