  1. I like to see about a dozen runs tonight as a means for setting the tone for the whole series.
  2. I think he'd be an ok addition, but I'd be reluctant to trade anything of real value (read: prospects) for him, especially since he's older and a FA-to-be.
  3. I agree that the Brewers absolutely have to take at least 3 out of 4 against the Nats. Even just splitting that series 2-2 would be horrible and might change DM's thinking about the buy or sell issue.
  4. They haven't been very good lately, but I'm optimistic about the schedule: 14 games coming up with the Nationals and Padres (who are a combined 68-129) plus 3 at PNC. That's 17 games against last-place teams. Some more ambitious soul could break down the schedules for the Cards, Astros, and Cubs, but I doubt any of them will have it easier over the next month.
  5. I hope that was just owner-speak and not a genuine reflection of how the team is going to approach the next week. Still, I guess I can see the point of holding off when there are15 games over roughly the next month against the Padres and Nationals.
  6. I was watching "Quick Pitch" this morning, and when they showed the WC race, the Brewers weren't even on the first page. The team is currently 4th in the division and 7th in the WC. True, they aren't many games back in either, and a hot week or two could change things considerably for the better. But if we were just talking about "Generic Team X" in this situation, I'd be inclined to say, "It's time to start thinking about selling." Remember, at this point last year the Brewers were 15 games over .500 (!), 3 games up in the WC race, and they just had acquired one of the best starters in the game -- and it turned out that they were just barely able to hang on for the WC. In 2007, they were 11 games over .500 (!) and 2 games up in the division -- and it turned out that they missed the playoffs completely. With that recent history in mind, I have a hard time looking at the current standings and thinking, "Hey, this team is going to make the postseason." I'm not willing to raise the white flag quite yet, but if I were DM I'd think long and hard about making deals that would serve the team's needs in 2010 and beyond.
  7. Wow, a year ago on July 25, the Brewers were 59-44 and three games ahead of everyone in the Wild Card race.
  8. Series is doubly important because ATL is ahead in the WC standings, too. Can't afford to drop 2 out of 3. (Oh, did you notice that Cubs already have won today?)
  9. Interesting tidbit from MLB.com story on trade: "Overall, Cardinals left fielders have batted .212 with a .294 on-base percentage and a .342 slugging percentage in '09."
  10. Yeah, it should be moved! I wasn't thinking...
  11. What do you make of it?
  12. My only reservation is that I remember Bannister's father playing, and his presence in MLB makes me feel old.
  13. He seems decent enough, and I like the idea of not throwing away a ton of prospects.
  14. I'm just the opposite when it comes to no-hitters and perfect games. I'm almost always pulling for the guy. (If it were a meaningful game against the Brewers, I might think differently, though.)
  15. I see what you're saying, but I don't know that they really are near the top. In the Central, they are behind STL, the Cubs, and Astros; for the Wild Card, they are bunched up with 5 teams who are 3-4 games behind the Rockies and the Giants. None of those deficits are insurmountable, though, especially since it's not even August yet. There's still plenty of time to sort things out.
  16. No towel-hurling here, but concern, in part because there are so many teams out there basically competing for 2 playoff spots. (For the sake of argument, I will concede the NL East to the Phillies and the West to the Dodgers.) At the moment, you have the Braves, Marlins, Cards, Cubs, Astros, Rockies, Giants, and Brewers all in contention for some kind of postseason berth. Will some of those other teams fade/implode? Sure. But not all of them.
  17. Talk about mixed emotions: you go from worst to (almost) first, but you leave your brother behind.
  18. Talk about mixed emotions: you go from worst to (almost) first, but you leave your brother behind.
  19. Time to start playing solid baseball again. (Tied with the Astros now in the Central, and there is much traffic in the Wild Card race.)
  20. I don't think it's always the best idea to give a hopeless team motivation to beat you.
  21. I am not sure that's apples-to-apples. I was highlighting the apparent importance of the Brewers' aberrant performance against a single team.
  22. Career OPS+ of 91, and, prior to 2009, exactly one season of OPS+ of over 100. Career average OBP of .334. Count me among the underwhelmed.
  23. I guess what scares me about it is that the degree of success seems so aberrant. Yes, the Brewers are better than the Pirates, but to the tune of 19-1 over the past two seasons? As a point of comparison, the Phillies (a better team than the Brewers) have gone 22-8 vs. the Nationals (a worse team than the Pirates) over the past two years.
  24. This is hardly a news flash, and I'm sure that you could make a similar point about other teams, but I have been wondering about the exact numbers over the past few years: 2009: 5-0 vs. Pitt., 41-44 vs. everyone else 2008: 14-1 vs. Pitt., 76-71 vs. everyone else 2007: 10-6 vs. Pitt., 73-73 vs. everyone else I guess this (2 games over .500 over the past 3 seasons against everyone but Pittsburgh) shows the importance of thoroughly mopping up on inferior teams. It also bodes well for the remaining part of the schedule, which will feature the Pirates many times. But maybe the pendulum is due to swing in the other direction? It wasn't too long ago that Pittsburgh gave the Brewers fits, especially at PNC.
  25. That's why I'm always wary when hear a player's "athleticism" touted. I sometimes think it's code for "he can really leap, he but can't make anything longer than a 10-footer."
