  1. Quite an impressive performance thus far from the home team.
  2. Why do teams throw Braun strikes? It makes no sense to me. He'll go lunging after that slider off the plate every single time.
  3. When I'm President, I will sign into law a measure banning people in the stands from waving to the camera while talking on their cell phones. That really bugs me.
  4. I guess Soup didn't hear the warning from the ESPN booth about Soriano.
  5. I am glad that we're apparently not going to see Kendall catch 150 games -- especially since he is batting a goose egg thus far. (To be fair, the hitting was rotten across board over the first week.)
  6. I was thinking the same thing. If I remember Ted Williams' The Science of Hitting correctly, he stresses not getting your hands too far away from your body as you wait for the pitch. JJ is about 2/3 extended now, it looks like.
  7. I think people are angry because he pretended that the Orioles were in the running when, in fact, they never really were.
  8. I almost started a thread on opening day; the title was going to be, "My new least favorite player is Mark Teixeira." I am from Baltimore, and grew up a diehard O's fan. (They are still my default AL team.) I can say that there is a particular low-key, blue-collar loyalty that fans in the city really genuinely admire. It's why folks -- including me -- still worship Johnny Unitas; he sort of embodied that vibe. Same thing with Brooks Robinson. Teixeira seems to be the antithesis of this. He claimed to be interested in playing for the O's or Nats because of his alleged interest in returning to the area, but, in the end, his greed got the better of him and he went elsewhere -- to New York, of all places. Basically, we Baltimoreans hate phonies, and Teixeira seems to be about as phony as they come.
  9. This would be weird, even without the Cub factor. Would you really be able to have fun with your wife's boss in the mix? I also think your wife might be overestimating how much her boss cares, one way or the other. If he's a regular guy and a baseball fan, he's going to have fun, regardless.
  10. MSU is going to need to play semi-'85 Villanova-esque to beat UNC, but you never know -- there are going to be a lot of Sparty fans there tomorrow night, and that should help.
  11. He might work it out during the season; you never know. But I share the concerns about Riske. He basically got torched this spring, which makes me think that he hasn't really recovered from his injury. I hope it's just a delivery/mechanics thing that can get ironed out in a few games....
  12. Holy starter-by-committee, Batman! Manatee had nine guys pitch one inning each.
  13. He does seem to be made out of the same material as TGJ's bat, whatever highly breakable thing that might be Braun is back in the lineup today - not sure if that makes me happy or not. I guess it does If he's dinged up, what's the point of having him play in totally meaningless exhibition games? I don't get it.
  14. And probably Dontrelle Willis as the runner-up.
  15. Without over-indulging in gender stereotypes, I would have to agree. At our grocery store, the female cashiers can be just painfully slow. There are a couple who seem determined to lovingly fondle every item for a few seconds before scanning it. And the all-female cashier-and-bagger combo can be a real killer, too. (Major socializing.)
  16. Ugh. The fact that it's Ken Rosenthal makes me think it definitely won't happen.
  17. I think that the sportswriter bit at the end is a joke, but the rest of it seems as though he means it. (And, if he doesn't, he needs to learn how to write better satire.)
  18. You and me both man! Ever since I first saw her on Boston Public! I can't remember it word-for-word, but Michael had a great bit about her when she showed up in Scranton -- something like, "Was your dad a G.I.?" She's the daughter of Quincy Jones, no?
  19. I was afraid this would happen. It's not quite DL-worthy, but it looks like it's just going to nag him. Let's just hope he sits and rests it until Opening Day.
  20. 10+ hits hasn't been done, ever, in a nine-inning MLB game. 10+ putouts for first baseman is pretty routine. My suggestion would be something like: 4+ hits, 2+ SB's, and maybe something with assists (greater threshold for IF's, lesser for OF's).
  21. I don't like the 'home court' that the higher seeds get these days. Villanova, UNC, Duke, etc. etc. Way to stack the deck to the big programs, NCAA. I think Kansas had two games in Kansas City last year.I was really appalled to see Villanova playing in Philly -- here are two home games, courtesy of the NCAA!
  22. I was wondering about this with the abbreviations on the CBS ticker. Couldn't they make it "MISR" instead of "MIZZ"? Abbreviating a nickname seems silly to me. And is it me, or does the Sweet 16 seem pretty dull? I am sure the games will be good, but the only Cinderella is . . . Arizona? They are the un-Cinderella Cinderella ever.
