  1. I guess it would depend on how much Fuentes would cost. If we could get him for 3 years at 8 million per we wouldn't have to worry about a closer for a few years which would be nice. And that would be a relative discount compared to recent years. Any more than that, and I would go with Hoffman.
  2. I honestly think we need a panic thread so certain posters don´t put their panic posts in like every single thread. I think the point has been made and is shared.
  3. Well, right. That's when you have to include other things like the fact that Sheets has had problems with his throwing arm. Is it really wise to throw a three year 15 million per year contract at someone who has experienced those issues? That is the definition of unwise. Sabathia may cost 5 million per year more, but he has no arm trouble and is undoubtedly the better of the two. Sheet's best year, this past season, CC has done as well or better in each of the last three years. If we could get Sheets on a one year deal, then maybe it would be something that could be considered. But matching or exceeding the reported Yankee offer is just too much risk.
  4. Career numbers doesn't tell the whole story. CC's past three seasons he has had an ERA+ of 140, 143, and 162. He also did that in the American league where he doesn't have to face pitchers. (Except for his stint with the Brewers) Over the same period Sheets has had an ERA+ of 119, 117, and 139. He also gets to face pitchers, which is a distinct advantage. Anyone who says that Sheet and CC are close to being the same pitcher isn't being honest. Sheets has only had an ERA+ over 140 once in his career. Something CC has accomplished the past three years.
  5. Sheets is not as good as Sabathia, and this is coming from a pro-Sheets guy. Sabathia is clearly the better pitcher. Add Sheet's injury concerns, especially the latest one being in his elbow, and it's night and day. Sabathia is probably in the top two or three SP in all of baseball. Sheets is probably in the top 15 to 20.
  6. Yeah, Sheets wanted to be hurt. He earned it because he didn´t stop his body from getting injured. The guy threw in one of the last games of the season despite his arm hurting, what a "softy". I think sometimes people´s expectations of athletes are just ridiculous.
  7. Care to explain why? It doesn´t exactly add to the discussion when you just make a statement like that end. I´m not saying I disagree with everything you said (especially about Garland and Perez), but backing up your statement would actually encourage discussion instead of discourage people from tossing out their ideas. Penny to me makes a lot of sense unless he is seriously injured. Throughout his career Penny has been a guy who has an ERA in the mid threes to low fours. Last year was obviously an exception because of his injury. But if Brewers scouts believe he can go back to being the high three, low fours ERA guy, he would make a lot of sense. He is only 30 years old, would come cheap, and may be looking for a short term contract so he can boost his value, as right now his value is at an all time low. He doesn´t cost us a draft pick. There is a lot to like about Penny assuming his shoulder checks out in the pre-signing physical.
  8. Well, if we could add both Sheets and Johnson for less than CC, at significantly less long term risk, I say we should do that. Giving us a rotation of: Gallardo Sheets Johnson Bush Parra Obviously I consider Parra better than Bush, but having him in the #5 spot would not have us going with back to back lefties. Not sure what we would do with Suppan, I wonder how well he'd be out of the pen and as the #6 starter were something to happen. He could fill the role of long reliever. Obviously finding a trade partner would be a much better option, but we'd have to choke a serious amount of salary to even get teams to start talking.
  9. After doing a bit more reading, it really appears like the US phone companies are trying very hard to prevent the use of VOIP over cell phones. The 3G network offered by AT&T is capable of handling the data to offer this to the public. What it really comes down to is that the cell phone companies stand to lose a lot of money if VOIP is freely offered in cell phones (for obvious reasons). What we need is a company who is desperate enough to get customers that they offer it here. I have a feeling that is where the cell phone industry is eventually going to go. But I see them dragging their feet all the way there unfortunately. The other hope it appears in the VOIP cellphone is the development of nationwide Wifi. Skype already has wifi phones so the phones exist for such a thing. Either way, it will probably be quite a while before any of this is available unfortunately.
  10. Wow, couldn't disagree more Fondy. Fazoli's is my absolute favorite fast food. Love the free breadsticks, yum!
  11. Just a shot in the dark here to see if anyone knows anything about this. In about half a year or so I was thinking about purchasing a new phone. I would be really interested in any of the above type of phones. I noticed that T-Mobile offers a Data Only package for their phones. I'm sure Google and Iphone work in a similar way. Currently, since I have been living abroad, I have been using Skype, which has been an absolute gem of a program, as I get unlimited calling and receive unlimited calls for only $5 a month. I was wondering, if I get a data only plan for any of the above phones. Is there any way that I could go about running Skype on there so I can make and receive calls without having to purchase air time? Basically using data only? For example, I've noticed that T-Mobile offers unlimited data for $39.99. It would be sweet if I could also make unlimited calls through Skype within that data package for only $5 more. Does that make sense? Does anyone know if that is possible? I've done some basic searching, and I have found a couple programs that run skype, but still charge for airtime. (Such as iSkoot)
  12. FWIW, I thought Xcellence's deal was pretty fair. Especially considering how high Escobar's status as a prospect is. It looks like you didn't notice his inclusion in Xcellence's deal End.
  13. I know some have said they would be disappointed with a Gamel/Hall platoon. But I think it makes sense. First, the majority of pitchers in MLB are right handed. So Gamel would be getting an overwhelming majority of the starts at 3B. It would allow him to break into the bigs gently and not forcing him to have to hit against the tough lefties. It would also allow him to work on his defense with the big league coaches. Plus having his lefty bat off the bench on games he didn't start would be a definite plus. The other option could be Nelson, I guess he played some 3b at Nashville. Does anyone know how well he was playing there? I don't see the Brewers going and spending a lot on 3b (either via prospects in a trade or dollars in free agency) if they recognize Gamel as the future at the position, which I really think they do.
  14. If Sheets accepts arby, and I think that's a big if. Would we be best served putting all of our remaining offseason money into CC? It seems to me that this offseason may be one where there will be a number of players coming cheaper than expected. Having Sheets and Gallardo at the top of the rotation is very solid. Imagine how good we would have been last season if we had that pair at the top of our rotation the whole season. Instead of for a few weeks at the start. Now, we could spend all of our cash on CC at what is not considered a discount. Or we could fill a number of other holes in our lineup. We could use the money to bring in Hoffman AND Dunn. Trade either Hart or Cameron for pitching help or help at 3B, and have a much more potent lineup along with a solid rotation. The Hoffman and Dunn combo would also likely be for a shorter time period leaving us with much more flexibility financially going forward, which is very important for a smaller market club like the Brewers. A middle of the lineup featuring: Dunn, Braun, Fielder would probably be one of the most scary in the league, with all three having 40+ HR potential.
  15. Defensively Lowell >>>>>> Branyan/Hall. And he would put up about equal offensive numbers than they would. He would definitely be a better solution at 3B then those two. Plus Branyan is a huge health liability.
  16. That sounds less like a curve and more like a gravity ball. But you gotta like the numbers he put up, an 8-1 strike out to walk ratio is great. Hopefully that transfers to the big leagues.
  17. I can't imagine they'd want much for him. It sounds like Cubs management has really soured on him. I think they'd be happy to get half of what they spent on him back to make other deals. A moderately solid A ball player might do the trick. The alternative is to have a player with a huge contract rotting on the bench. A move like this would help both teams IMO.
  18. This is exactly what I'm saying. The guy is probably going to average around around a .350 or so OBP. My guess is he'll be a mid to upper 700 OPS guy. I think his added OBP and his Lefty bat would make him valuable enough where he and Cameron would be more or less a wash (Cameron will have more slugging and less OBP and is right handed). Defensively, while Cameron may cover a bit more ground, Fukudome has a canon for an arm. I know that Yankee prospects are sometimes over hyped, but you can never have enough cheap pitching. If we could add a player like Hughes in a deal while replacing Cameron's production with someone cheaper, I don't know why we wouldn't do it. We can't expect Cameron to keep up his production either, the guy is a year older. We need lefties and solid OBP people. Fukudome is an option that provides both.
  19. Interestingly enough. I looked at his BABIP for his last month, and it is .198. That seems to indicate that at the very least in his last 28 games, he was extremely unlucky. His second half BABIP was .248. Once again this seems to indicate that much of his second half slump was a result of bad luck. If we bring that BABIP into a more average range. He becomes a guy whose OBP would probably settle around .350 or .360. He isn't the .380+ OBP guy he was in the first half, just like he isn't a .314 OBP like he was in the second. The truth lies in the middle.
  20. False. His first three months he had an OBP over .380. His fourth month is when his numbers took a dive. This could be a situation where the the scouts and pitchers figured him out, or this could be a situation of him not being used to playing in a 162 game season. I don't believe he was no where near as bad as he played in the last two months. He probably wasn't quite as good as his first 3 months either. The truth as always probably lies somewhere in the middle. He is a good defensive outfielder with the ability to play a solid CF. If he can get on at a .350 or .360 clip, he would be a wonderful option in the #2 spot in the lineup. My point is, people keep plugging Crisp, but Crisp's season was no better than Fukudome's. So if we are so opposed to getting Fukudome, I don't see why Crisp is such an attractive option either.
  21. He plays a capable CF and has an above average arm. As for why the Cubs would get rid of him to the Brewers, it appears that they really soured on him, and would desperately like to get rid of him and at least some of his massively bloated contract. I don't see how being in the same division would prevent them from getting this type of deal done. This would free us to look into trading Cameron to the Yankees for pitching.
  22. Until they sign a backup middle infielder, we may have to go on the assumption that Escobar will be the backup middle infielder next season. We have no one on our current team that could play backup SS other than Escobar since we got rid of Craig Counsell.
  23. Look, I'll start out by pointing out that I am well aware that he tanked in the second half. But despite that tanking he still finished the year with an OBP of .359. He hits left handed which is a plus. I guess it all depends on what scouts think. If Kosuke's decline was due to scouts figuring him out and his lack of ability to make adjustments then we rightfully don't want a part with him. I imagine Fukudome was better than he showed in the second half and worse than the numbers he put up in the first half. Which means his current numbers would probably be a good guess as to where he'd end up next season. But I imagine him coming rather cheaply (with the Cubs eating most of his salary). For all of the talk of Coco Crisp on this website Fukudome put up nearly equivalent numbers last season. Fukudome's OPS was a bit heavier OBP wise than Crisp's, where Crisp's was more dependant on slugging. The Cubs would have to eat a ton of money off of his contract, but if we could get him for around 4 or 5 million per year or so, it might be worth a look.
  24. I would guess that his working at 2b would not necessarily mean that he'd be moving there full time, but a concession that he will be our backup MI for next season. If all he can play is SS, that limits our options as to when we can use him. But if he can come in and be a defensive replacement at 2nd late in games, and give both Rickie and JJ a break, his value as a bench player goes up. It would also provide him the opportunity to get plenty of ABs next season which would help him in his offensive development. If he is going to play at the major league level next year as a backup, he is going to need the ability to play multiple positions.
  25. As long as we have 104.7 La Grande, do we really need any other options? I mean once you get a taste of latin men rocking out on accordians and tubas, you never go back.
