That was obviously an extension-worthy play by Pratt :)

It's interesting to see how 2 rival orgs operate differently. Cubs - Hoerner extension - 6 yr / 141 MM - covering years 29-34 Original extension $36 MM for years 27-29. Crew - Pratt - 8 yr / 50 MM - covering years 22-29 - could cover years 30 & 31 - for extra $30 MM Brewers are more comfortable taking 'risk' with young players that can develop, while the Cubs are setting up consistency, while taking on 'risk' with aging players. I prefer the Brewers model, but it really depends on the individual org's strengths. If you aren't a good development org, or your owner doesn't have patience, then I think the veteran route makes sense.

We'll see, but Manfred's comments recently are moving towards eliminating local TV deals and taking the whole viewing package to market in 2028. If he can get that done, the table is set for more equitable revenue sharing and competitive balance. If he can get that done, that would be the grandest accomplishment by a MLB comissioner.

I don't get all of the Yelich shade. Even though CY did not make his debut with MIL, he is the face of this era of Brewers baseball. Taking away the partial 2020 season, Yelich has put up almost 4 fWAR per season. That is worth like $28-40 MM annually on the open market. He's making $26 MM now and the AAV of his extension is like $23 MM. Seems like the Brewers still got surplus value in that extension. Mark gets a lot of flack from fans, some rightfully, but he has always had at least 1 long term, face of the franchise type on the roster since he was owner. Ben Sheets turned into Ryan Braun who turned into Christian Yelich who will likely turn into Chourio, Made, Pena or someone else. Long story short, I don't understand the angst related to not having a long term, consistent face of our baseball team.

I don't think there is a clearly defined role for Jett yet. I think that will be based on how he performs in ST and the health of his competitors for a roster spot. Long term, I would say that Mona is the one that is in the most jeopardy since Jett can play SS.

I have seen a lot of people on both sides of the trade stating that TM is either a big loss or big add. He had 50 IP last year for the Crew. Pretty sure Henderson, Gasser and Coleman Crow will surpass more than cover up those 50+ IP. I see Sproat as a Freddy replacement, if not this year, then by 2027. I think it is reasonable to believe that he pitches 100+ IP with the Crew this year. I'm not sure what we got in Jett Williams, but I think I will like it. Power/speed combo that has defensive versatility...count me in. I trust the team will figure out where he fits best.

Sounded like Jordan Montgomery liked his time with the Brewers. If everyone on the current depth chart is healthy, then Montgomery makes some good sense, especially if they can get him signed to a 2 year contract....we will have holes in the rotation then. If everyone is not healthy, Quintana or Cortes makes a lot of sense to cover early season innings.

Will The Brewers’ Winter Ever Heat Up?
GasserFace replied to Jason Wang's topic in Brewer Fanatic Front Page News
That's a bit unfair. You didn't even mention adding Zerpa in the OF swap out. Who would you suggest adding to the OF that would move the needle over the group mentioned above, while also keeping into account the goal of competing all the way through 2030? -

Sugar, There has already been a trade from their controllable OF depth. Just because they haven’t moved a package of prospects doesn’t mean they haven’t discussed trading them. We just don’t know about them. At this point, the FO deserves all of the benefit of the doubt related to making or not making all deals. They obviously have not received a needle mover yet. The idea of making trades just to keep the fans engaged in the offseason makes me sick to my stomach. This FO has proven to be aggressive when they know there is a roster hole. Adames Priester etc -
I love the recent articles on Lockridge and Easton McGee. I’ve seen a bunch of comments poo pooing these 2 players but one of the reasons the Crew has had a sustained playoff run is because of guys exactly like this. Count me as a believer that both players will provide positive value in 2026

I would love to see the Brewers player database. I vaguely remember Garabito and Rom. My guess is that they have different buckets of players with drop down fields like 2026 capability (All Star, MLB Starter, MLB Roster, Fringe MLB, Org Depth etc) with potential $$ values assigned to each player. Sort best value by need and assign to an Assistant GM to talk to each player's representative to see if their evaluation and the player's expectations match. Boom! Cut a deal and move on to the next list. I think it would be fascinating to watch this process for a year. Maybe if I win the Powerball, I can buy myself a seat in the brain trust LOL.

I loved this trade yesterday and I love it even more today. Great work as always Jack.

The Brewers are not going to escalate the payroll on any of the big free agents. A trade is possible, but I would put that at less than 50/50. If you are going to follow the Brewers, the best strategy to get through the offseason is to have no expectations. This makes it much more enjoyable. For example, everyone remembers where they were on Greinkemas and Yeli/Cain Day. Heck, I even remember being super pumped about Yaz Grandal. If you have expectations of winning the offseason, I would suggest following the Dodgers, Yanks, and wherever AJ Preller works.

I would be shocked if this happened. The price, injury history and the Twins desire to keep him around likely make a Buxton trade not an option.

My gut tells me that his doubles total would drop at AmFam vs Fenway, especially with the great article that Jayson Stark had on The Athletic about the death of the double and triple, which is related to advanced OF positioning. You can place your OF as deep as possible at Fenway, but they can't climb the Monster. Also, I have to mention that Ike Collins needs a bit of grace from all of us. His slump coincided with the arrival of his first child. Let's see what he looks like early this season. In that Athletic article, Collins also was one of the best OF's in feet gained via jump and route per Statcast.

I wish there were not concerns about the locker room vibes. If there were no concerns, I think this trade is a no brainer from the Brewers side. The Snakes would probably want more in that scenario, because they should get arms back late in 2026 and for sure in 2027. With those concerns, I still think this trade could work for both sides. Marte would absolutely alter the Brewers offensive ceiling. I am not concerned about the payroll in 2029 / 2030. Yelich will have moved on. Made and others will have arrived on pre-arb / arb deals. I'm also not concerned about the defense. Marte holds his own and Turang will be OK at SS. Marte would likely be the DH in 2029 and 2030. This is the only logical trade target that moves the needle for this team. I'm fine if they don't make this deal, but would be ecstatic if they do. Pena would be tough to give up, but there are more holes in his game than in Made's. I'm confident that we can backfill Pena's spot on the prospect list.

Mitchell is a no brainer tender. I don't think it is even a question. Mears is the only question. I would not tender him a contract, but would also not be upset if they did tender him. Just limit his usage to keep him healthy.

It depends on the definition of below the radar. I think all of the pitchers mentioned are a bit too risky for this version of the Brewers, from either an age, health or erratic performance history. I'm curious how much Brad Keller is going to get on the open market this winter. His velo jumped to 97 last year working from the pen and he was very effective in leverage spots. I think his sinker / slider mix could be an upgrade over someone like Nick Mears.

I agree. Vaughn and likely Bauers can hold the fort down at 1B in 2026. The group of Wilken, Burke, Adams and Fischer should move into the mix in 27 and 28. I don't care who it is but it is nice to have options for both of the corner IF spots moving forward.

I think this recap of events in the NLCS is too outcome oriented, very much like every other casual baseball fan's reaction. Team played well if they win. Team played bad if they lose. Game 1 - Brewers faced a healthy, rested and extremely precise Blake Snell. Who BTW has won 2 Cy Young awards. The Dodgers have decided to attack the Brewers hitters early in the counts to force them behind in counts. Much of the Brewers success, and frankly the bulk of MLB offensive success, is based on being ahead in the count. This approach and Snell's execution forced the Crew into tough situations. With all that said, they still had a chance to win that game. They didn't. Game 2 - Yamamoto is using the same strategy listed above. Chourio takes advantage and smacks the first pitch out. Several loud outs later including at least one 111 mph liner off Chourio's bat and the Crew is held down the rest of the game. Meanwhile, Freddy makes arguably only 1 mistake the entire game. Teo's homer was a meatball but credit to him for driving it out. Muncy's homer was a decent pitch that a good hitter handled. Even mentioning that someone else would have robbed that HR is suspect at best. After that, the Dodgers offense continued to be relentless as Murphy used the back of his pen to hopefully live to fight another day. Do the Brewers need to be more selective? Yes. Is this serious a mismatch so far? Absolutely not. Will the Brewers get this series back to MIL? I say 'yes'. Glasnow and Ohtani will be tough as well but if their command is slightly off and the Crew can eliminate some of their off-speed offerings, then I believe we can get to both. Blake Snell looks too good right now, but he is not perfect. Don't be so doom and gloom Brewers fans. I trust this team and their competitive resiliency. GO BREWERS!
-
Matt, That was a tremendous breakdown of what happened last night, and how the Brewers are just smarter and better prepared than the Cubs. For Vaughn to trust that a sweeper inside is coming right there, takes a ton of homework by the front office, coaches and the player. Same with Wild Bill and just sitting fastball there. Hopefully, they have a better plan against the new version of Taillon and his kick-change. This team is dangerous. I like their chances against any team that they run across.

How hard is it to square up 101 and send it 420 feet? I think I saw a stat earlier this year that BAA and OPS against 100+ pitches was sub .200 BA / sub .500 OPS. That is just an absolute stud hitter beating a stud pitcher. I'm glad we have that guy on our side for the foreseeable future.

I'm curious if any of the Brewers pitching plan calculus included using Miz and Chad Patrick at home for their playoff debuts. I think that environment allowed both, but especially Miz, to get their feet wet in front of a supportive crowd. I believe that Priester is better suited to pitching on the road, especially with a 2-0 lead.

I think these conversations should be broken into peak value and long term value. Obviously, peak value would be just 1 season. I would define long term value as 5+ seasons. With that said, here are the peak seasons to consider: Weeks - 2010 - 6 fWAR - 127 wRC+ Molitor - 1979 - 5.1 fAR - 127 wRC+ Molitor - 1982 - 5.6 fWAR - 132 xRC+ Turang - 2025 4.4 fWAR - 124 wRC+ I think Molitor wins the peak conversation. Weeks wins the long term battle,. If Brice plays close to his 2025 levels moving forward, he could take both titles in this conversation.
