  1. I was thinking the same thing. If your the Cubs would you rather face a playoff road that consists of the Mets followed by the Dodgers/Phillies, or the Dodgers followed by the Phillies/Brewers? Lou would never speak it out loud, but he is a crafty old dude, and I would not be the least bit surprised if he wants to beat the Mets more than he wants to beat the Brewers. Whether or not he does anything about it is a different matter, but I gotta think his choice would be pretty clear.
  2. I would agree there is a real chance - probably not a good chance, but a chance. Since the challenge for the brewers seems to be winning the necessary number of games, if he's ok and can help, he should. The goal still has to be to make the playoffs and go to the WS.
  3. To answer the initial question... http://z.about.com/d/chemistry/1/0/G/d/toxic.jpg
  4. I think I kind of prefer the steady as she goes Yost approach to the aggressive, outs on the base paths desperation hair on fire approach of the Sveum era. Then again, these final couple weeks should provide plenty of evidence that the manager was the least of the problems with this team. I realize Dale was dealty a bad hand with the Sheets injury, but we are going to have to have guys starting on 2 days rest soon.
  5. I long for last Sunday night, when we thought that was the low point of the season. It is almost impossible to believe that it has actually gotten worse.
  6. Sabathia was a great move, but he fell into Melvins' lap. It didn't take a genius. Was it really a good move though? It appears now that Mevin may have badly misjudged the rest of the team in thinking Sabathia would make them playoff/WS contenders. They gave up plenty for CC and for the second consecutive season, a significant trade will net them nothing as far as the post-season is concerned. The benefit of hindsight makes the Sabathia trade look not nearly as appealing as it did a few weeks ago. A GM is judged by his ability to put a team together without the benefiit of hindsight. Now, the great unknown (supposedly) is the role attanasion played in this as well as theNEd firing. If he instructed Ned to go get Sabathia (possible), and he instructed Doug to fire Ned (likely), then i would submit that Doug will probably choose to leave on his own - assuming Attanasio doesn't axe him first. I love everything Attanasio has done, but I am starting to wonder if maybe has lost sight a little bit of what got them to the point of being considered playoff contenders.
  7. If Attanasio fired Ned based largely on what happened in Philladelphia, how is he going to react to this (which I think is accurate)? Certainly not what he spent $90 Million to accomplish. Iwould suggest Doug better make sure his proessional network is intact.
  8. I just played guitar (that I am trying to learn how to play) for a solid two hours and I got to thinking...had I spent even half the time I wasted on the Brewers this Spring/Summer/Fall learning to play, do you have any idea how good I would be by now? As I have said before, I don't hate the Brewers, I hate myself.
  9. I love this, and its too bad, because boards like this really need fans like you.
  10. For the most part, the bullpen has stunk on every team he's ever had. I think he has done a good job, and I probably wouldn't fire him, but I'm not sure he wants to come back. I think we all know who instructed him to pull the trigger on Ned. You think he wants to hang around and wait for his turn? That said, there is plenty of reason to question him. Much like many have concluded Ned wasn't the guy to take the next step, perhaps it is fair to wonder the same about Doug. The Sabathia trade suddenly doesn't look so good. Not because he hasn't performed, but perhaps because he misjudged just how good/bad the rest of the team was. The question has to be asked, is the team a playoff/WS contender even with Sabathia? It doesn't look like it. Therefore, was the trade actually a good idea? Obviously, Attansio shares the responsibility in a trade of that magnitude, but he certainly isn't going to blame or fire himself.
  11. Five years?!?!?!? Where have you been? Its been a lot longer than that.
  12. Maybe, just maybe today was the Brewers Brant Brown moment. All appeared lost for the Cubs on that fateful day in September in '98, but in the end, it turned out fine and the Cubs went on to win game 163 and made the playoffs - of course they got spanked in 3 straight, but they weren't actually that good...kind of like the Brewers. Sound familiar? I am going to bitterly cling to this for the next day or two.
  13. Granted they have superior talent, but the Cubs provided a good example of what a professional baseball team looks like. We are light years away from that, and the Cubs, Mets, and Phillies in particular have deminstrated that very well. Even though the Cubs are obviously better, a team of professionals in the position the Brewers were in, finishes that game today.
  14. I just remembered I have tickets for the 25th. How meaningless is that game going to be? Will the Brewers be mathematically eliminated, or just effectively eliminated? I better get someone to drive me, because I can't tell you how much beer I am going to drink before, during and after that thing. Man I am steamed.
  15. Counsell is at least left handed, so I will conceed that one, but as far as Kendall is concerned, there has to be a reason. Ther just has to. Doesn't there?
  16. Well, hopefully he can tell the Brewer players what the post-season is like when the get to Arizona next Spring.
  17. I guess Sveum's aggressive approach on the bases isn't exactly paying dividends so far. Ridiculous.
  18. The Cubs are very, very good - possibly the best team in baseball (Angels), and they very rarely lose at home. If the Mets lose tonight, we are still effectively tied, with the Mets having to face the Cubs 4 times next week. The Cubs playoff SPers are likely to pitch in that series, but almost assuredly will not pitch against the Brewers. All is not lost yet, but I'd feel a whole lot better if the Nats can pull another surprise tonight. Of course there is that whole issue of the Brewers not being a professional baseball team, but we can deal with that one tomorrow (most likely in the Vent thread).
  19. My vent is that if by some miracle the Mets lose tonight, I'll be right back in front of the stupid TV tomorrow night. Who am I kidding? I'll be there even if the Mets win tonight. Not sure which is more pathetic, that or the Brewers' performace today.
  20. Fortunatley its after 5:00, and the Beefeater just went from the shaker to the glass.
  21. I am starting to get the sense Ned may not have been the problem after all. Better watch out Doug...you're next.
  22. Like it would have mattered...The Cubs are so far out of the Brewers league, its pathetic.

  24. Thank God he didn't get that bunt down. Extremely lucky at second though.
