  1. If you can illustrate to me how this had any affect on wins and losses, I'll consider it.
  2. Is it just me or does that debacle on Sunday feel like it was about a week ago?
  3. Agreed. This should probably be considered a strike against Melvin, as opposed to an indictement of Sveost.
  4. Actually, who cares who leads off? If Braun, and to a lesser extent Hart don't start hitting again, the rest doesn't much matter.
  5. Any thoughts on why exactly he is choosing to lead off Cameron?
  6. I should probably clarify my position, but its hard to articulate. I don't necessarilly think that Prince "got Ned fired" and I realize you put that in quotes. I don't think this was a situation where he was whining to DM, or anything like that. I guess I just feel like Prince in particular may not have been as appreciative as perhaps he should be to how much Ned went out of his way to protect him, Weeks, Hall, etc. he clearly had their backs every time, and I just get the sense they didn't return the favor. Ned got himself fired, let there be no doubt. I guess what it comes down to is my sense that these guys are more likely to complain about Ned as opposed to taking a minute to look in the mirror. I readily admit there is a good chance I'm wrong, but I am beginning to have my doubts as to whether the attitude and professionalim matches the talent. Anyway, i don't care. Its done, and its done because they weren't going to bring him back in '09 anyway. We'll see what happens.
  7. One major difference that blows your baseless theory out of the water vs. my baseless theory, and that is Braun's public commenst in the wake of Ned's firing. I don't discount Braun's influence over the organization...he's the man and everyone knows it. Yet, he has publicly stepped up and taken responsibility on the part of himeslef and the rest of the players. For the record, you think Fielder has conducted himself in a completely mature and professional manner this spring/season?
  8. At this point, unless the Brewers win the next 6-7 in a row, I don't see any scenario under which Zambrano or Harden pitch in that final series. Perhapss not Dempster either, as those three will likley be their rotation for the playoffs. We may see one of them, but that should be it. It is probably safe to assume however that Harden and Zambrano will almost certainly pitch against the Mets however, and then get their rotation set for the playoffs.
  9. I don't know. My point is, has he ever, even once in his young baseball career ever entered a game mid-inning with runners on base? Has he ever even started an inning late in a game he didn't start? What eveidence is there to suggest he can be effective in that role? Is late-September the time to try to find out? I know this, we might as well fire up the Designated Sveum thread the moment he joins the active roster, because teh first time a situation like that arises, whether he does or does not bring him in, many will be complaining.
  10. The more I read comments from players, Melvin, Attanasio...everyone involved, the more I think this thing has Prince Fielder's finger prints all over it. Not just him, mind you, but given his stauts he would be the key. All this talk about how loyal Ned was, and how some guys didn't return the favor; some players thought he was too nervous, and caused tension in the dugout, etc. This is admittedly all rank speculation on my part, but by a process of elimination, I think we can reasonably conclude who did not necessarily feel that way, based on some of their comments, etc...Counsell, Kendall, Cameron, Hardy, Braun...I would say all absolved Ned from blame to some extent and demonstrated loyalty to him through their comments. As far as position players go, that basically leaves Fielder, Weeks, Hart and Hall - four guys to whom Ned was unbelievably loyal, and went out of his way to protect, and from my very outsiders perspective, are the very same guys who showed no interest in rewarding that loyalty. Again, just a theory on my part, but exteremly disappointing if true. I think Fielder has demonstrated flashes of immaturity/unprofessionalism thoughout this season, and perhaps this is just another example. Many reports indicate this was not exactly a surprise and had been coming for a couple weeks - I also find it interesting that he seemed to find his stroke the last couple days. I know that is probably just a coincidence, but I do find it interesting. Alright, let me have it...I can take it.
  11. Boy, I'm not sure what that really gives you. With 37 guys in that bullpen already, what is a guy who has always been a starter really going to have to offer? Could they potentially get him out there a few times and have him waiting in the wings for game 163? Would that be a better option then Bush or Suppan or whomever would end up having to start that game?
  12. Personally, I don't think you gain much by trying to do that, and I think you risk him being ineffective. I would get through the next couple games and reasses after that. However, considering he only threw 60 pitches or whatever his last time out, I would bring Suppan back on 3 days on Thursday, and give Parra a couple extra days. I know Suppan hasn't been much better of late, but at this point in the year, I'd feel a bit better with him out there. I think trying to get him that 4th start could be difficult and perhaps not worth it if it ends up hurting his or others effectiveness.
  13. If this was in fact Attanasio telling Melvin what to do, what are the chances Melvin is back next year? I'd suggest he may want to think about updating his resume.
  14. If he's the long reliever in the bullpen, and was taken out of the rotation, why hasn't he sucked up more innings (when the starting pitchers just sucked)? I woudl submit that the simple answer here is because his spot in the order came up. Without looking, I would assume he hasn't had any AB's in those games either.
  15. I dunno. I said Prince was real close to turning it around too. He is.
  16. The irony is, had Yost been fired at the end of July, it would have been obvious to everyone to credit that move for the great August. But in reality, dumping Yost for Svuem would have had nothing to do with it. If the Brewers win now, it will be because Yost is gone. If they continue to lose, it will be because of Yost. That's the definition of scapegoat. This is why I think this move is entirely because Melvin/Attansio had decided they didn't want to bring him back next year. This works on two levels...hopefully its a kick in the butt to the players and they win, but even if they had truned it around under Yost and made the playoffs, they wouldn't be forced to bring him back.
  17. While I actually advocated it yesterday (and without hearing any comments from Melvin etc.), now that it has actually happened, it feels a bit bizaare. In some respects you would almost think he would be given the opportunity to show he can get them back on track, but what I said yesterday was that if Melvin had an inclination that he would not be back next year, he should go ahead and pull the trigger. I suspect, that is what happened, and that this was far from a kneejerk reaction to the past couple weeks.
  18. In the last month+, the Brewers have played 14 games against teams likely to be in the playoffs (Cubs, Mets, Phillies and Dodgers) - one win. One! Prenetders! That said, amazingly, they still could end up in the playoffs.
  19. So today is the day he is supposed to report to Arizona. What does that mean exactly? What will he be doing there, and who will he be doing it against? A Sim game against a bunch of minor leaguers or something like that? Is that happening today? Tomorrow? Are they still hoping to bring him back? I know I am probably not going to get them, but I want answers. Let's just say he can come back. Is he a better option than Parra at this point? If he could be avaialable to start Saturday, and given Suppan's short start yesterday, anyone want to bring him back on 3 days rest, and Go Sabathia, Sheets, Suppan, Bush, Gallardo? Assuming he's capable. and there would be no further inyury concerns, is there anything really to be lost by doing so at this point?
  20. Yeah, I give a rip about the no hitter. We aren't going to catch the Cubs, and never were going to catch the Cubs, so what they do doesn't much matter. If anything they added a small silver lining by beating the Astros. They just finished an abysmal couple of weeks, but currently being tied for the WC, it is truly nothing a handful of wins can't take care of. I am not predicting that necessarily, but obviously its possible. In some respects a trip to Wrigley might be just the thing for this team. I can think of two nights in 1982 that rank ahead of this one.
  21. That, or an exremely gunshy Mark Attansio in 2009.
  22. I have supported the guy, but given some of the talk of the last couple days (Roenthal, etc.), If they don't win tonight and Melvin has any inclination that he won't bring Yost back, I would go ahead and make a move tomorrow. Admittedly that is a large reaction to the Shouse/Burrell AB today, and truth be told, if they came this far, he probably deserves the opportunity to prove if he can finish this season off as designed or not. if they turn it around and win some games in the next coule weeks, he probably will and should be back. If they don't he probably will and should be gone.
  23. Of course, but the skunk was well out of the box by then. They alreadt would have had to score 1 run to tie. What are the chances of them doing that? about .5%?
