  1. When Braun doesn't hit, this team stinks.
  2. Fill out the line up card, try to keep them relaxed and focused on just playing the AB in front of them and try to win a game. That is truly all he can do.
  3. At this point, if we leave Philly with sole possesion of the WC, I'll be thrilled.
  4. At least Lidge isn't any good. I think we have a good shot here.
  5. I thought this was supposed to be fun.
  6. I would suggest that should be the last we see of Sheets tonight.
  7. It's early, but thus far, this series has the unmistakable stench of that Cubs' series last month.
  8. Nice to see Mr. Dependable on the mound for the Brewers tonight.
  9. With Sheets on the mound, and Sabathia not pitching in the series, tonight's game is very big. If they can get the W, they will be half way to what they need to get done in this series. Going 2-2 in the process of knocking 4 games off the schedule would be a very good weekend. Would make the task extremely tall for the Phillies.
  10. It will be interesting to see what impact, if any, Ike has on this series. There appears to be real potential that they are going to have to postpone both Friday and Saturday's games.
  11. What tangible impact do you expect that would have on the field?
  12. Is Hart not available today for some reason? Obviously if he's not available to go in and play RF, TGJ hitting there makes sense. If not...a strange decision indeed.
  13. I have to say, I don't understand what your point is at all. You say... Yes the players have a responsibility to produce. But the coaches have a responsibility to to coach and lead. Why would you assume this is not happening? Bill is absolutely correct, the players do have to get it done on the field, and you are right that the coaches have to continue to work hard with them as well. The entirelty of your post seems to be premised on the assumption that the manager and coaching staff are not doing what they need to do, as if they are looking at the players and throwing their hands up and saying, "Its up to you guys." The players are collectively just not hitting. Is it because of pressure? Maybe. Are they pressing? Seems liek it. Could it just be a bad couple of weeks? Maybe. Its tough to say what the issue(s) may be, but there is nothing to indicate that the players, coaching staff, GM, etc. are not all doing everything they can to turn it around.
  14. These pretzels are making me thirsty!
  15. Momentum is tomorrow's starting pitching.

  17. Since he was fanning his face in wrigley field on opening day, I have thought that Gagne was not right in the head. At times he seems fine, and at others it appears he should be fitted for a straight jacket. I look at his home/road splits and wonder if that isn't something to be considered. He is far from great in either one, but I wonder if there is not a mental aspect that would indicate he should be used less at home.
  18. Riske provides as much evidence as any as to why Gagne continues to be used. Mota has been better of late, but lets not forget that BF.net had him DFA'd a couple times already this year. Shouse can't regularly pitch against RHers. That leaves an awful lot of outs for Torres and Villanueva to get. Perhaps guys like Stetter and DeFelice can help, but somebody has to get the outs, and right now the options aren't all that great. This is not a Yost issue, its a Melvin issue.
  19. The only flaw with that argument would be the suggestion that the team didn't know. Of course they knew. The whole world knew.
  20. First of all, don't underestimate the mental angle, but if you want to say its strictly physical, when you are getting tired, do you think its easier to groove a fast ball down the middle with a 6 run lead and dare them to hit it, or try to throw a perfect breaking ball on the black with a 1 run lead and hope they don't?
  21. When the alternatives for the innings he pitches are basically Mota or Riske, I think I might just have to continue to grit my teeth and hope for the best. Mota, Riske, an Shouse all have more IP then Gagne. Not sure simply letting Gagne rot for the rest of the year is a realistic option. You still have to get 27 outs, and to suggest that just giving those Gagne outs to those other guys is some sort of no-brainer tends to ignore the facts. How many times has the call gone up to DFA Mota? How many times has Melvin been criticized for signing Riske? How often are we reminded that Shouse should not face right handed hitters? Now we are asking to use those guys more? Gallardo could provide an option - potentially to remove Villanueva from the long relief role (until then he is more valuable there) , but you aren't going to bring him in with men on base, nor do we have any idea how he will perform in a relief role. Gagne will continue to pitch because he has to. There simply doesn't appear to be many alternatives.
  22. Actually, it doesn't. It makes perfect sense. Do you think it is easier to pitch once your PC gets into 3 digits with a 6 run lead in mid-August, or clinging to a 1 run lead in a game you pretty much have to have to have in September? To assume that the stress level associated with those extra 24 pitches is the same is of course ridiculous. If he tires and gives it up with a 6 run lead, you have an opportunity to recover. If he tires and gves it up last night, you probably don't. You wouldn't have criticized Ned had he left CC in over 100 pitches to give up the lead last night, would you?
  23. We need a win.
  24. I don't care about the who or where, if they can finish something like 14-10, I am likely to wet myself. The division is possible, but highly unlikely. I'll be more than happy with the WC, in a bad luck year where 94 wins can't win the division. Now, given the combined 6-9 (I know there are many games to play) record against the Mets and Cubs, and their ability to win in the playoffs...that could be another story.
  25. Well, Harden is seemingly going to be sitting around a while as well (Chicago Tribune)... He last started Friday, so he will basically miss nearly two turns in the rotation. "He needed the time, obviously," manager Lou Piniella said. "If he could pitch, we would have kept him in the rotation." Pressed about Harden's long down time, Piniella said: "He needed the time, we'll just leave it at that." I would guess they are just taking advantage of their sizeable lead and giving him an opportunity to rest, but just don't want to say that out loud. I guess we'll find out (maybe).
