  2. From the very beginning of this thing, I have had the feeling that Cuban is not seriously interested in buying the Cubs, but is involved more or less because he should be - more from a publicity standpiont. Perhaps seeing an opportunity to make his bid the highest, though not necessarily the best, and seizing on an opportunity to cry foul against MLB, file a lawsuit, embarass MLB, mess with their anti-trust exemption...I haven't quite established what I think the motivation is, but i don't believe it is to own the Cubs.
  3. General Manager Jim Hendry continues to explore the market for trades, evaluating Oakland right-hander Huston Street and Colorado lefty Brian Fuentes, among others. But the guy apparently getting the most immediate consideration is Jeff Samardzija, the former Notre Dame receiver who is pitching well as a starter for Triple-A Iowa. OK by me. Let's see what he can do.
  4. Thank you Captain Literal. Does sarcasm really need to be in blue for people to realize its sarcasm?

  14. May not be up to him...A guy like Sabathia is going to do what he thinks is best, and Ned most likely will (and should) let him. Especially being the new guy. Some still like to complain about the Cardinal's series at the end of last year, but there is no doubt in my mind that situation has some level of impact on the way this team is playing for eachother and for Ned today. I don't think anyone would disagree that this team is a tight group constantly looking out for eachother. I don't see any way Ned stops the players from 'seeking justice' if they think its warranted.
  15. Funny...I was just coming here to post that my immediate thought last night was that Billy, or possibly Prince or Braun is going to take one in the ribs tonight, when I saw your post. Were I a betting man, I'd be willing to bet someone gets hit. Actually, at some point, as he usually does, LaRussa will strike first to the point of potentially getting both benches warned so he can get a free one, because not only is a he a miserable...he's a bit of a coward as well. That might be tough tonight though, unless they warn both benches after the first strike. More likely scenario is that he gets it started tonight, and then plunks Braun in the first tomorrow which would undoubtedly draw a warning, and put Sheets in a tough spot.
  16. I must say, I've never understood this type of thinking. I say, c'mon in!
  17. So, without pushing any buttons on the calculator, were that table to hold up, factoring in home/road, the Brewers should win the division by 2-3 games. Done deal. Home field advantage here we come!
  18. I believe they generally try to avoid day games and the oppressive heat and humidity in St. Louis in July and August, as much as possible. They typically do the same thing in texas, KC, etc. With the Brewers needing only to travel to Milwaukee after the game - probably a wise decision. Were they headed to California or something, I assume they'd probably make it a day game.
  19. I would agree this seemed to be about a bird in the hand - with the bird being Gallagher, Patterson, etc. A team like Oakland can't really take the risk with a guy like Harden. If they hang onto him now and he gets hurt again, they would basically be left with nothing. If he gets hurt now, teh impact on teh Cubs is not nearly as significant. It could work out great for the Cubs, but Oakland will almost assuredly end up with at least a couple MLB players for a few years.
  20. With S&S going the next two, I'll go on record saying I will be happy winning 3 of 4, and a split would be a HUGE disappointment. Let's get that third one tonight!
  21. It is pretty funny, I just went back to read some of the posts from mid-May (p. 46 or so if anyone is interested). You do have to wonder how many games below .500 this team would be right now if they hadn't replaced Ned with a manger who is nicer to the media, yells and screams once in a while, and holds his players accountable (whatever that means). Oh wait...
  22. Yet again though, if you can demonstrate that's what he actually did, go for it. As far as the AB goes, no question, but as I said, a manager cannot take that kind of oversimplified look at any give AB. I still want someone to tell me that with a 1, 2 or even 3 run lead in the bottom of the 10th, that Villy working on his third consecutive day is a better or even equal option to Torres working on his third consecutive day.
  23. and torres was going to be extended and pitching for the third consecutive day. Ummm, yeah...Villanueva would have been working for the third consecutive day as well. Torres has a proven history of being a rubber arm and threw a grand total of 14 pitches the previous 2 days. So, sorry, but the fact that each worked the previous 2 days clearly supports sticking with Torres over going to Villanueva.
  24. I would agree, but unfortunately the manager of a MLB team does not have the luxury of taking that type of oversimplified look at a given situation, so I guess I don't quite understand the point. First off, there was only 1 out, meaning Weeks has a crack at getting that run in too, and obviously it ended up working out. But, more importantly, who would you consider better equipped to work for the third consecutive day and protect a 1 run lead in the bottom of the 10th had they not scored the extra run(s), Torres or Villanueva? Its not close.
