  1. I am assuming this will be some sort of tendonitis/dead arm thing, and he will be back pitching before very long at all. That said, if it does turn out to be more serious and he misses significant time, I don't think there is any doubt it would change things rather dramatically - at least until Sheets gets hurt. Their rotation would immediately take a serious blow, which will impact the bullpen, etc. Beyond that, if they had hopes of acquiring Sabaitia, Harden, etc, the Cubs' price probably just went up. At the moment, I am still conceeding the division to the Cubs, but I could waiver a bit if this turns out to be something. I remain convinced Pujols will opt for elbow surgery, and in my opinion the potential of a Zambrano injury should increase Attanasio/Melvin's motivation to go out and acquire a SP. This could potentially put the division into play, in addition to the WC. Personally, I give a rip if we get to the playoffs because of another team's misfortune, so long as it happens. Gallardo, Riske, Gagne, Weeks (not to mention the assumes Sheets injury)...the Brewers haven't exactly been a picture of health this year.
  2. I was thinking the same thing when I read the subject of this thread...Six weeks is a long time for anyone's Wang to be out.
  3. So he did this once, and the player involved publicly said the same thing Ned did, and that translates into Ned bahing players?
  4. So which is it, he bashes them publicly and throws them under the bus, or doesn't hold them accountable to the media? And since I assume your answer will be that he bashes them publicly, some examples would be nice.
  5. First off, i have no problem with the "greed" of players. If someone is going to pay you what you ask for, go get it. Fans may not agree, but whatever someone is willing to pay you is what you are worth, and I have no idea why people have a problem with players wanting to get paid what their worth. That said, I too think that to win, pitcers do need to be the focus. Of course there are special talent - superstar caliber guys that you usually need to win as well. I would put guys like Braun and Fielder in that category. Bottom line if you want to win, you have to have both.
  6. As I look at the WC standings, the NL is just a suckfest. I think the injury to his calf will be the impetus to have the elbow surgery he needs, and put an end his season, and likely the Cardinals' along with him. The Marlins are pretty good. I would suspect the Mets and Braves will be heard from at some point. I still think Houston has potential. Maybe the Dodgers. Maybe Colorado, but that's about it. I think the key for Milwaukee will be to stay in that top 2 or 3 spots for the next 30-45 days, so they don't find themselves in the position of having to jump over 5-6 teams to win it. Beyond that, since it would appear that the Brewers could have as good a shot as anyone, I think they should be the team to go out and grab a starting pitcher sooner rather than later, once teams start making guys available. Not sure who that guy would be exactly, but not only could he help you get there, but once you do, pitching is what matters. Hopefully a playoff rotation of Sheets, Unnamed Savior, and Suppan would certainly seem to at least have a chance. I will say that IMO, if they don't go get someone, with the current rotation, they have no shot at the WC. The formula for the Brewers... Hang around --> Get a pitcher --> Clean up against a seemingly favorable schedule in July, Aug, and Sep. [ G E T / S T A Y H E A L T H Y ]
  7. Dude, what are you taklking about? Thirteen minutes earlier, you said this... The reason he's on at 3:13 and not 3:40 as I had hoped, is because he'll be in the Astros clubhouse...as he often is at that time. Put me in the camp that says he has not spent anywhere near enough time in the Brewers clubhouse to be able to arrive at this conclusion, and more or less just made it up to complete his Cubs column/argument. He reads the papers so he knew about the Bill Hall stuff, and Fielder earlier in the year, so hey, bad vibes...why not?
  8. I agree that barring some terrible rash of injuries or something, the Cubs will win the division. That is as much, if not more about a rotation of Sheets, Suppan, Bush, Parra, and McClung as it is about the Cubs. Even if the Brewers fire on all cylindars the rest of the year, they simply don't have enough cylinders.
  9. I could get behind something like this. Kind of addresses the Sheets issue relative to next season as well.
  10. "If Billy's not going to be an everyday player, it's probably best for him and the team to be traded," Bross said. "They could get a pitcher for him that would really help the team. Ummm...yeah. Define really help the team. What sort of return does a .250 hitter who doesn't get on base, strikes out a lot, and plays average defense bring?
  11. I am resonably certain that Mike Cameron bought and moved into a house a few doors down from me. A few years ago a builder built a house and put it up for sale at a ridiculous price. It remained empty and for sale for at least 2-3 years. Suddenly a few weeks ago, it sold. During the Brewers first homestand after Cameron joined the team, someone was moving in and there was a tricked out black Escalde w/ Georgia plates in the driveway. They soon went on the road again, and the Escalde was gone the entire time - until yesterday morning when I drove by after the Brewers got back in town, the Escalade was back. So, while I haven't actually seen him, I am pretty certain its a Brewer, and reasonably sure its Cameron - just makes too much sense.
  12. Suppan, Bush, Parra, McClung/Villanueva/Weaver...they don't. Its looking more and more like the dream of competing for a playoff spot died on the afternoon of May 1st in Chicago.
  13. Yeah, you kinda have to pick a lane, but it demonstrates just how much is wrong with this team, and over the long haul this season, pitching is by far the biggest problem. I heard someone on the radio say that firing Yost would be like giving a Tic Tac to a whale, and I think that about sums it up. There isn't a manager alive that can make our rotation built of 80% 4/5 starters and turn it into a rotation one would find on a playoff team.
  14. If by back end you mean the final four spots, I agree. This really sucks. It looked like this might be the year where we actually have a rotation that can compete. Instead it is shaping up to be a year where we finish the year with worst rotation in baseball after Sheets is fitted for pinstripes in July - assuming he is not on the DL by then so we can't even trade him.
  15. This is correct. Its perfectly logical, and its pretty much covered on the first day of Double Switch 101. If you want to argue he should have simply PH when the pitcher's spot came up instead of the double switch, that's something else, but then you would have to use 2 pitchers to get through 1.1 innings as opposed to just one (theoretically anyway). I wounder if anyone would have criticized Yost for using too many pitchers in a 5-1 game? Nah.
  16. How exactly would it do that? That is what I would like someone...anyone to tell me.
  17. You completely misread my post and turned it into something that it is not. Baseball is entertainment, and it's a business. In any business, if employees aren't performing, people (fans) will leave the business because of poor service or whatever. Now imagine that you have some trainees that come through the system and they all have been extremely successful in their training. Then they go out on the job and start out showing the success that they had in training. Throw in a few other new employees that were successful at other companies in the same position. Suddenly they all start failing, and the only common denominator is their manager. At some point, you have to figure out who is screwing this all up, because the customers are leaving. Luckily, you already have their business locked up for the rest of the year, but if you want that business to keep coming back years down the road, you better figure out who is screwing it up now. That's all fine...but it has nothing to do with what I was talking about. I asked a very specific question about comments to the media, and what impact they would have on the field. You made it very clear why you wanted to hear him react differently to the media, and its cool. Nothing to indicate it would lead to more wins, but it would make you feel better. That's fine, and you want Yost gone for other reasons...that's fine too.
  18. To a different question, sure...Here's the question I asked... How would saying, "Four errors is completely unacceptable. We have been stressing better defense since last season ended and a major league team should never commit four errors in a game." to the assembled media make the Brewers better? I'm not talking about saying that to the team, I am talking about the specific criticism people like to bring up about his coomments to the media. Again, if it is so that the fans feel, better, I'm cool with that, but at least have the stones to call it what it is. If not, provide me any reason why comments like those would make the team better.
  19. I'll take that to mean you don't have an answer. Beast Light at leats attempted to provide some reasoning, although what he really provided was an example of actions taken by Lou Piniella where he help a player accountable by pulling him, not saying X,Y, and Z to the assembled media. Yet, many are suggesting that saying X,Y and Z matters. Of course managers/coaches are fired for all kinds of reasons. That's not really what I'm talking about, as my point is a very specific one in response to a very specific (but often repeated in similar forms) comment...Since quite a few people feel its important, I would simply like to know why/how making different kinds of public comments, is going to help the Brewers win games?
  20. No, actually I get it just fine. What exactly does hold players accountable mean though? Should he be putting Hall, Cameron and Weeks on the bench and playing Counsell, Dillon, and Kapler every day? Would that be preferable? I'm sure nobody would criticize him for that. Other than putting guys on the bench, how else does a manager hold players accountable, by crticizing them publicly? The Rich Hill example is a pretty bad one...He's in AAA at the moment. Did that experience make him better? Not yet. Did it make the Cubs better? Well, yes I suppose it has, because his replacement is performing better. What alternatives does Yost have to the guys who aren't performing (This also quickly enters Doug Melvin's realm from a telent perspective)? My question that you refuse or are incapable of answering was as to a specific point of what some think Yost should say...that saying something to the effect of "4 errors is unacceptable" to the media would be preferrable. Preferrable why? Please tell me what tangible impact would that have? How will that help them win games? If you want him to say it simply to make you feel better as jazzytrav (perhaps unwittingly) admitted, that's cool, but lets call it what it is. If not, please explain to me how that is going to make the team better.
  21. Actually, no. If they were to make a move on Ned today, I'd understand and be fine with it. I simply see little or nothing to be gained by doing so. "Fire the coach/manager" is a losers lament, generally fueld by wishful thinking on the part of fans seeking easy answers to complex problems, because they just want to beleive a team is better than they may actually be.
  22. Maybe you wouldn't. But thank you for putting it out there so clearly. The reason you want him to publicly criticize his players is to make you feel better - to make you more comfortable buying a ticket. That's your reason, and that's fine and good, but I will ask one more time...in terms of play on the field, wins, losses, etc., what do you expect that type of public criticism to accomplish?
  23. Show who? You? I'm pretty sure showing the fans he has a clue is not necessarily at the top of his list of objectives. Obviously his bosses feel he has a clue, or he wouldn't be in that dugout every day. I'll ask again, but be a bit more specific - in terms of what happens on the field, in the clubhouse, etc, what excactly would it accomplish?
