  1. I'm thinking Greg Maddux hasn't really taken pitching advice in about 10 years.
  2. So are any of you sort of assuming he's headed for elbow surgery, like I am? It just seems that since there was no obvious pain, etc. that he probably just felt something, which probably is not a good thing. Obviously remains to be seen, but if that is in fact the case, this season is quickly turning into a nightmare from a pitching perspective.
  3. The Yost thread was not immediately bumbed to the top after last night's game. Rather, people are approprsaitely directing their venom at those who desereve it - namely, Fielder and Mota.
  4. Hoenstly, probably something slightly worse than what he will end up with at the end of the season.
  5. Prince is a mega-talent, and I love him, but its May 15th and its time for him to stop sucking. I am not a big if only this one play in a 9 inning game had been made , things would have been different guy, but if he doesn't botch that most routine of routine ground balls, the Brewers win that game. I could even go one wild and crazy step further and say that if he doesn't botch that most routine of routine ground balls, not only do the Brewers win, but one could also argue Riske would not have come into that situation and would probably not be seeing Dr. Raasch tomorrow. Hyperextended elbow? Sounds like trouble to me.
  6. I think its exactly correct. If he isn't closing, he really serves no purpose on this team. He's not the type you can bring on in the 6th or 7th inning with runners on. Guys like Torres, Riske, etc. have demonstrated they are better suited for that. If Gagne isn't able to succesfully close games this year, the Brewers aren't going to be very good, as it will take its toll elsewhere. This situation is sort of like that of the Cubs (in a way). Carlos Marmol is pretty obviously the best reliever they have there - far better than Wood. However, he is far more valuable in the 6th, 7th, 8th inning - helping to put out fires or protect a lead. If you take him out of that role, there are likely fewer 9th inning leads to protect and you minimize his value. Likewise with the Brewers...its possible Torres/Riske/Mota could effectively close, but if you take them out of the 6th, 7th, 8th, they will probably see fewer opportunities to do so. The long and short of the theory is that you use your second best reliever in the 9th, and your best releiver when you need him most. Obviously not always going to work that way as it obviously depends both on the individuals and the overall makeup of the bullpen, but I think the Cubs case is a very obvious example of that, and the Brewers is as well, although aybe not quite as obvious since we don't really have anyone the caliber of Marmol.
  7. I think that, given the timing for ARI, they got what they felt they needed when they needed it. It was wise imo to snag a top-tier, in-his-prime SP to run out right when your young position-player prospects (Upton, Jackson, Drew, Reynolds, Young, etc.) are MLB-ready. It ensures that a solid SP rotation got even better, all while the DBacks can afford it due to their young guys still being 'cheap.' Once they have to pick & choose which young guys to keep around, they'll have gotten 2-3 seasons during Haren's prime already, & can flip him for prospects or re-sign him as they see fit. This is exactly why I would say Arizona is winning, and ultimately will win. Their rotation would have been pretty decent without him, really good to downright scary with him. If they get anything at all our of Randy Johnson or Doug Davis...Yikes! Harren takes them from playoff contenders to WS contenders. This is exactly the type of trade I was hoping DM would have been able to make this off season, for all teh reasons you state...given his injury history, sort of pretend Sheets doesn't exist, and set out to strengthen the rotation and aquire a number 1/2 caliber starter. That way if you do end up getting a full year out of Sheets you have a dominant rotation, and you have coverage in the event he gets hurt again - or as it stands right now, coverage for Gallardo's injury.
  8. Not sure who its gonna be then. Probably Cordero, but they don't look to be a factor (and the reason I forgot about him until just now). Valverde certainly seems like a better option than Gagne or Wood - maybe not Matrmol though, as I'm not sure Wood will even have that job down the line.
  9. No doubt the Cubs are the favorites at this point, and the point about the bunches of guys is the reason why - probably ahve the deepest bullpen as well. Not to mention that Zambrano is probably the best among he Sheets and Oswalt.
  10. Seeing the Astros 9-1 in their last 10 caused me to take a closer look, and is looks to me as if the rumores of their untimely demise may have been exagerrated. Just looking how they stack up against the division, I'm not sure why they shouldn't be included in the conversation. Starting pitching is certainly most important, and I don't see a whole lot of difference betwen them and the Brewers and Cubs. Much as the Cubs have Zambranao and a bunch of guys, and the Brewers have Sheets and a bunch of guys, it seems the Astros have Oswalt and a bunch of guys. They probably have the best closer in the division right now in Valverde. Offesnsively, with Berkman, Lee, Tejada, Pence, and a number of experienced players, it seems they will score runs. Defensively is likely where they fall down a bit, as I don't see many gold gloves being handed out in Houston, but it sure is starting to look like they are going to be around a while.
  11. Save for possibly a trip to the minors to work on some things which almost certainly was not going to happen, this is the only alternative I see. I just don't see him working through it any other way.
  12. I didn't realize Gagne was hurt and I didn't think you could send a guy to the DL for "Broken Confidence". He isn't (I assume), and you can't. You can however send himto the DL for things like "arm soreness," "tendonitis," or any host of made up ailments that clubs use all the time to put a guy on the DL.
  13. Does placing a player on the 60-day DL remove him from the 40-man? If so, I think its safe to assume that Gallardo will be moved there, with someone - possibly Branyan or Weaver taking that spot, and Gagne going on the 15-day DL to clear a spot on the active roster. Neither of those excites me at all, but given the week ahead, the Branyan move may make some sense.
  14. I am no Branyan fan either, but I have a feeling we'll see him called up after the game tonight - just not sure who will be removed (gagne to the DL would seem to be ideal).
  15. So you're assuming this is being done just so he starts against Boston? I don't necessarily see anything to indicate that is or is not a safe assumption. I'm sure we'll find out in teh next 24 hours or so if/when they make a couple moves.
  16. They will definitely do something after the game today - as they are pretty much a man down in the bullpen given the Gagne situation - perhaps a DL stint for him? It appears someone not currently in the rotation may start on Thursday (don't worry, Weaver pitched yesterday, so it won't be him). Interleague is looming this weekend. I think it is safe to say a couple things will be done after tonight's game.
  17. If they were able to remain healthy, I don't think so. The way I put it to a Cub fan friend of mine at the start of teh season, was that the team that was best able to avoid injury would win the division. I think Gallardo's injury has unfortantely put the division out of reach for the Brewers, unless the same thing were to happen to Zambrano, Lilly, or possibly Marmol.
  18. Given some of the uncertainty in the bullpen right now, I suspect we may see a move or two after the game tonight. This could simply be part of whatever is coming in that regard.
  19. I think it is fair to point out here that Florida and Houston are both 8-2 in their last 10 games. Now, obviously the Brewers played a role in that, but so did the Nationals, Dodgers, and Padres. Not that the Brewers have played very well, but running into two white hot teams didn't help any either.
  20. So what on earth are we supposed to do with this guy? Any chance he would accept a week or two in the minors to try to get himself right? To me that would be ideal. Assuming that isn't what happens though, I'm honestly not sure you don't send him out there one or two more times sooner than later, and literally hope he can turn himself around. If he can't close, he has very little value. I don't exactly see him flourishing, or even getting any better in a set-up role. The Brewers must figure something out though. The only way I see them having any success at all this year is if Gagne has success in the 9th inning. That has been the case since before the season started.
  21. The players' reaction after that hit said it all. Looked like quite the release of emotion - a bit more than your run of the mill walk off win in May. Hopefully they can build on this one.
