  1. True. My point was that I don't think Melvin's player signings/trades (outside of Sabathia) had very much to do with the Brewers' success in 2008.
  2. That's a biggie. And if Mark A hadn't (allegedly) stepped in, Yost might still be the manager for 2009. Melvin has had several solid moves -- Podsednik and Vizcaino for Carlos Lee being his best move IMO. And even though it's not really a move that figures to benefit the team for the longterm, I'm glad Melvin pulled the plug on the Sabathia deal. Making it to the playoffs was great, and there's no way it happens without CC. Granted, without LaPorta, that deal is not a possibility... That said, I think the sum of all of his general managing has been pretty average. He was very good at turning a laughingstock franchise into a respectable one. I don't think he's done much to elevate the team to the next level though, as I believe Jack Z's draftees were more responsible for the 90-win season than any moves Melvin made.
  3. Yeah, there seem to be some people whose main objective is to seek out flawed posts, and tell that poster how/why they are wrong. I don't think they could help themselves from disputing vent thread posts, even though there were numerous reminders from mods to just let vents be vents. I guess I really don't see the big problem with having one thread where people don't need to write a dissertation to defend why they're soured on a player, or the offense seemingly struggling with RISP. I enjoyed being able to gripe about Rickie's crappy defense after botching two routine double play balls in a game, without having somebody tell me my opinion is wrong because (insert obscure new defensive metric) shows he's actually "just below average, not awful" or whatever...
  4. I was thinking about trying out a computer GM sim baseball game. Is OOTP widely considered the best baseball management game? Are there any really close alternatives that are free? I'm looking for a game that you can just play by yourself, without having to compete with other people online. Thanks.
  5. None of them are young or inexperienced enough anymore that "youth" should be used as an excuse for baserunning mistakes, defensive miscues, or (for pitchers) wearing down by August. I don't think those types of things can be written off to "the kids are ...." anymore. Hopefully we don't have to listen to the manager and announcers bludgeon us with that stuff again in 2009.
  6. The fact that so many people immediately pointed out that 3 or 4 of the Brewers starters are of little to no value is exactly part of the reason I'm concerned. As I've admitted, I don't have specific answers because I'm not a GM and don't know all of Melvin's available options. Would it be worthwhile to consider moving Fielder or Hardy? Gamel? Depends on what the return could be. Maybe he doesn't really have any good options. I just hoped (still hope) that the offense would receive some kind of overhaul to shift more away from the low-OBP, high-SLG, high-strikeout dominant identity the Brewers currently have. Who exactly could they get and what might they have to give up? I don't know the specific answer, but it seems like with all of the personnel shifting that goes on during an MLB off-season, there really should be opportunities for a team (coming off a great attendance year) to improve the makeup of the roster, that are better than signing another washed-up vet to a spring training invite.
  7. The move wouldn't necessarily have to be something that added a ton of salary. As you said, trades are always a route to change and improve a team as well. I mean, I think that some people (myself included) think that the makeup of the team as it currently stands isn't going to produce really good results. A move to improve the OBP of the team (even if it means moving something of value -- and maybe giving up some slugging) would be nice. Or something to bolster the bullpen wouldn't necessarily be terribly expensive. The starting pitching is potentially still a little shaky as well. I don't know all (or any) of the possible trades that are at Melvin's disposal, but I know I wouldn't really like going into 2009 with the same significantly flawed club as last year, minus our 3 best pitchers (Sheets, Sabathia, and Torres). I think a significant change should be made to the overall makeup of the team, particularly the position players. This might mean giving up something of value (Hart, Cameron, Weeks, Hall), but it needs to be done IMO.
  8. I don't think people are worked up about the moves themselves. People are concerned that these moves might be Melvin's primary way of improving the club, which to be honest, is a legitimately scary thought in my opinion. These kind of moves should be afterthoughts, to be taken care of after the real talent is no longer available. Melvin is messing around with this junk (and Melky Cabrera, etc.) and seemingly not devoting any resources to making an impact while there's still time and available players. Disclaimer: I know it's only December. Please don't point it out. I am a proud owner of a calendar. An impact move could still be made. However, as more time passes signing Trot Nixon to a minor league deal, more and more of the talented players will get gobbled up by other teams.
  9. Exactly. He could, for example, take 10 or 20 million of that and donate that to a bunch of local schools in his home town. Not saying he couldn't do that with what the Brewers are paying...but an extra 60 million makes it a lot easier. I don't fault CC for taking that huge amount of money...Good points that I hadn't really considered. I guess I just get disappointed that the Yankees offer so much more, that no other factors even come into play. Hopefully CC is able to do some positive things with the extra cash.
  10. Perhaps. I still get a kick out of Creed's shadiness though.
  11. Well, it sounded like the Brewers were willing to go 6 yr / $110M, maybe even a little more. Who knows what the Dodgers or Giants would have offered, if they hadn't bowed out due to the Yankees bidding against themselves so high that CC finally caved and accepted it. I think that's comparing apples to oranges. First of all, your pay range is at a level where that extra money would actually improve your economic quality of life. I think Sabathia's offers were so high, that I really can't imagine it making much of a difference to him. Seems like it's more about the pressure from the player's union. Secondly, remember that to get the extra money, you'd have to live in a city you potentially didn't want to, far away from your home, for a company that wouldn't have otherwise been your first choice. Like I said, I'm just surprised that almost nobody in sports ever seems interested in prioritizing the other things in life over the extra money.
  12. Just once, I'd like to see somebody tell the Yankees to go have sex with themselves, even if they are offering time-and-a-half what everybody else is. If there was anybody who I thought might have a chance to be "different," and actually seemed like they might have what is takes to let something other than money and pressure from the players union dictate their destination, I figured it could have been CC. It didn't even have to be the Brewers. If he had signed with the Giants for a lot less than the Yankees, I would have respected that. Seriously, what difference can it really make to a guy when those kinds of obscene amounts are involved? What can he do with $170 M that he couldn't do with $120 M? He's only gonna get one chance to be a baseball player in the prime of his life, it seems like doing what you want, where you want to would be more important than being bought out by the extra millions. Guess not. Like Ted DiBiase would say, looks like everybody's got a price. I hope someday, somebody surprises me.
  13. Once again, Creed steals the episode with a single line. Jim: "You'll need to get a permit." Dwight: "True, that will take a couple weeks." Creed: "I can get you one in under an hour."
  14. It's my dad's fault. He got me into all things Wisconsin sports, including the Brewers.
  15. I'm really not though."Just as one generally doesn't enjoy associating with individuals who constantly exude an air of negativity, none of us want to operate, read, or participate in a forum where entire discussions are founded entirely upon the concept of impulsively expressing displeasure." This quote, referenced by FTJ earlier, along with other quips in this thread seem to paint a picture that the staff has collectively decided to rid the site of "impulsive expressions of displeasure." That's a philosophy I just can't agree with. I wouldn't want impulsive expressions of happiness to be banned either. It's true that these posts might not be of the highest quality, but they contain the emotion -- and emotion is as big as a part of being a baseball fan as stats or anything else. When something bad happens to the Brewers, I want to come here to share my frustration with other fans. Same thing when something good happens and I want to share my unbridled excitement. I don't like the idea of emotions being suppressed at brewerfan.net. I'm not attempting to tell you all how to run the site. You've done a great job building my favorite sports-related website. Reading Brian's post, I realize it must be incredibly difficult to find the proper balance. However, if the major problem is a handful of posters dominating discussions with repetitive arguments (something that I agree is problematic), I guess I don't see how that relates to the vent thread. However, I digress. Just wanted to share my opinion on the matter.
  16. I think it's kind of sad that the moderators have decided to try and dictate the "mentality" of the board, although it is obviously your right. The mentality of the board should be steered by the mood and mentality of the fans and posters. That's not to say you shouldn't have rules. There was still no swearing or personal attacks allowed in the vent thread. For the most part I have always thought the rules of this site were fair and made sense, but this goes beyond rules. It seems like an outright attempt to shift the overall tone of the fanbase segment who posts here, in order to fit in with the outlook of the staff. Will the "Silver Lining Thread" be banned as well? Excuse me if this comes across as rude, but I think that some of the moderators here are starting to take themselves and their role a little too seriously. I'm not sure how I feel about continuing to post here if the goal is a sterile environment where the mentality is driven by the moderators.
  17. Does this mean that there will be no vent thread during the season? I know that there were "non-quality" posts in the vent thread that were somewhat impulsive and emotional, but I thought that was sort of the point -- so that that stuff didn't end up ruining other threads of substance. If you think that eliminating the vent thread will eliminate posts of irrational frustration, I think you're wrong. My guess is they will still be present, but end up contaminating productive discussions in other threads.
  18. O2 sensor was what I was thinking too when I read the description. I also had this problem, and many diagnostic tests missed the problem before I finally brought it to a specialist who figured it out. Here is a little more info on oxygen sensors if your neighbor is interested. Symptoms are: · decreased fuel economy · hesitation on acceleration · stalling · surging · rough idle and · increased tailpipe emissions
  19. After some searching, I believe that is what you're looking for. Don't remember ever seeing it as a kid myself. Think it would have given me nightmares...
  20. McDonald's seems to usually deliver the goods, although (sacrilege to some, I know) I think the McRib is gross. Taco Bell is good. Burger King seems to have gotten really bad lately. It seems like the food is always cold, and the buns don't seem fresh. The one thing I did like was getting their "zesty" sauce with fries, but they started charging for that -- even just one pack to go with fries. Charging for condiments!
  21. Is it possible the Brewers try to make do with Hall and whoever for the first couple months of the season, and then bring up Gamel around June (a la Braun in 2007) to either start or platoon? edit: Oh yeah, forgot to mention I'm pretty bummed. I hoped they would extend him through 2009 when he was on his torrid hitting streak last year. He might have been willing to do it for cheap just to have the security of a major league job.
  22. The 'Chinese Democracy' thread got me thinking -- at what point should a band no longer be considered the band? The new "Guns N' Roses" consists of Axl, and a bunch of new dudes. Is that really GNR?? I really don't think they should even use the name anymore. What about when all the band members are still together, but the frontman is changed? If only one (relatively) unimportant member of a band is replaced, it seems easy to consider the band to be still in tact, but where do you draw the line? I'm curious to find out people's opinions on this. Please provide specific examples if you think of some!
  23. 1. It's not really Guns N' Roses 2. Axl has a braided weave
  24. Not going out of my way to continue to bash TH, but he doesn't even seem to be following his own logic. Pujols mashed in August and September, and the Cardinals finished with 86 wins for fourth place in the wildcard hunt. Pujols in the final months: August: .398 / .491 / .745 / 1.236 September: .321 / .427 / .702 / 1.129 That blows Fielder's numbers in those months completely out of the water -- and that doesn't even begin to take into account defense. I really don't understand how somebody could do something as a profession for so long, and yet understand so little about it...
  25. Wow. No comments yet. I thought the "Bill Buttlicker" scene was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on a TV show.
