  1. For the most part, I just think the pitching matchups favored the Reds, and they capitalized on that. I think the Reds were already on the radar as the darkhorse possibility in the division. It's all about their young starters, if they do well, that's a much different team. The thing is, that same statement is true of the Brewers, who I believe have a much better lineup. Time will tell.
  2. I can't say I'm surprised by the outcome of this series, I just didn't like the pitching matchups for the Crew, from the minute I saw them. Going in, I was hoping they wouldn't get swept, and it wouldn't have taken much. Villanueva is a fine pitcher, but you have to bet on Harang, I thought the Reds would get to Suppan, which didn't happen - before the series started, I was hoping the Brewers would get the middle game. I'll feel better about it when the Reds face Sheets and Gallardo, while the Brewers miss Harang and Cueto - it's a long season.
  3. The point was that a guy coming off an MVP-type season is sitting there with all zeros right now - but ok - you got me.
  4. Today's lesson - don't make any judgements based on April statistics. Total HR for Dunn, Fielder and Howard - 2 - Total HR for Bengie Molina - 3 Total SB for Carlos Gomez - 5 - Total SB for the NY Mets -3 - Jose Reyes has zero Total RBI for Carlos Quentin - 8 - Total RBI for Magglio Ordonez - 0 Oh, by the way, Maggs also has zero HR, and zero Runs ERA for Roy Oswalt - 6.00, WHIP - 1.92 - ERA for Micah Owings 2.63 - WHIP - 0.88 Exactly how many guys became vegetarians over the winter? I guess we know which guys took their burgers!
  5. This stinks for Gwynn, who was making the most of his shot, but congrats to Hernan!
  6. This is the guy Prince takes deep.
  7. Hall has so much natural power, when he really drives the ball, his swing looks almost effortless. I'm glad he's seeing better, I'm glad he's back in the infield - I'm just glad he's back, period. A solid year out of Hall makes this team an absolute monster offensively.
  8. I agree, when Gagne has gotten hurt, it's been with the fastball. Nobody has handled the curve or the off-speed stuff yet. He threw all fastballs to the first three guys in Chicago, and got killed, then changed, and got outs - last night he looked fine, and then he put a 2-strike fastball right at the belt.
  9. This happens more than you think, this is what ran Kevin Seitzer out of KC (and into Milwaukee) back in the day, LeRoy Butler also went through this in Green Bay.
  10. Gagne, who had blown only 10 saves in 187 chances before this season, regretted shaking off Kendall before throwing the fastball to Patterson. Jason Kendall knows all, Mr Gagne, never do that again. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=737216
  11. Jason Kendall is now batting .526.
  12. Jordan Schafer, ranked #1 in Atlanta's farm system by Baseball America, has been suspended 50 games for using HGH. http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080408&content_id=382471&vkey=news_milb&fext=.jsp After a slow start as a pro, his production picked up dramatically last season - I'll bet I can guess when he started using.
  13. I wasn't expecting that from Suppan, the Brewers did about what I thought they would offensively, but I thought the Reds would put up 5-6.
  14. The thing about Cueto is, he obviously has good stuff, but he also benefits from being so new, most of these hitters have never seen him. At some point, hitters will adjust to him, and he may prove to be above average, but I think he'll have a great run early in this season.
  15. Soup can't have one of those "Six innings, 4 runs" starts tonight.
  16. What pick do the Brewers have in the 2008 draft? http://forum.brewerfan.net/viewtopic.php?t=11699
  17. Congrats to Geoff Jenkins on his first HR as a Phillie today.
  18. Some thoughts after one whole week of baseball... Gabe Kapler will not hit 54 home runs this season. Manny Parra will not win 27 games. Ben Sheets will not finish with an ERA of 0.00 The St Louis Cardinals will not reach the playoffs. 1/27th of the season is in the books, Detroit will win a few, St Louis will lose a few, and the Mets will collapse in September - some things are just meant to be.
  19. Look at the deals for Haren and Bedard, and pick your target for next winter. The Brewers may choose to keep Cameron, they may decide Gwynn is their next CF, or they may decide to move Weeks into the OF - this would make LaPorta expendable, and possibly Gwynn as well. Escobar will be on this team next year, if Weeks stays at 2B, that means Hardy or Hall becomes available, and then we get to minor leaguers like Gamel, Jeffress, and anyone else who might be on some GM's radar. The Brewers will draft all day this spring, and will probably be set up to do it again next season, my bet is that they let Sheets walk, and deal for a replacement.
  20. The Cardinals don't scare me in the least, there's a list of "ifs" on that team about twelve feet long. If there's a team that might surprise and hang in the race - it's the team we're about to see in Milwaukee.
  21. The Brewers are pursuing deals with many of their young players right now, guys who are making less than a million each are about to jump to several million each after this season. Ben is going to get a huge contract, just look at his mound opponent today - Barry Zito got a horrible contract out of the Giants - if Ben tops 200 IP this year, I'll bet someone offers him an insane contract. It really depends on what Ben wants, the only way I see him here next year is if he flat out wants to be, and decides not to take top dollar. Not only do I think he's gone, I also think Houston will aggressively pursue him, they have lousy pitching right now, and they're the closest MLB team to Ben's family.
  22. What more could you ask for from this game? The Crew finished off the sweep, everyone hit, and Sheets pitched a shutout. Where can I order 40 more of these?
  23. The Brewers have six picks in the first 63 of a what looks to be a deep draft. In 2005, the Red Sox had six picks in the top 57, they wound up with Jacoby Ellsbury, Craig Hansen, Clay Buchholz, Jed Lowrie, Michael Bowden and Jonathan Egan. Now, the '05 draft may wind up being the best ever, there are already several impact players in the major leagues, with more about to get here. It may not be fair to compare what happened for the Sox to what might happen for the Brewers, but that's not just any list of names for the Sox - they made out like bandits that year! Egan looks like a bust, but those other five players were rated by Baseball America as Boston's #1, 2, 5, 7, and 18 prospects prior to the season. For instance, using BA's rankings of the Brewers' prospects, that would be like adding LaPorta, Parra, Gamel, Brewer and Scarpetta to the system, prior to the end of round two. Go Jack Z!
