  1. This trade fits the recent pattern, for sure, there's just no reason not to do it. We all know some of these kids will not pan out, but loading up on young talent is absolutely the answer, and the team is undoubtedly doing that. Take a look at this, 13 of the top 30 have come from the Gallardo trade forward, and that does not include Santana, the pitcher obtained in the Jason Rogers deal, or any of the three pitchers obtained for Adam Lind. Oh, and the Brewers will pick 5th in the draft this year. http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2015?list=mil This, friends, is what we like to call, a "rebuild."
  2. Which has been the Rockies' motto for most of their existence. Excellent
  3. The most detailed version I heard of this story, which somebody posted here well after the fact (I'm sorry my memory isn't better), was that the teams agreed that the Indians would get Brantley if we made the playoffs and Green if we didn't. I have no idea whether that's accurate. Yes, that is exactly what happened.
  4. If it's Washington, first of all Lucroy would have to waive his no-trade, but there is a hidden advantage there for both clubs. If the Nationals send Wilson Ramos to Milwaukee in the deal, Washington's payroll actually goes down. Lucroy over Ramos is what Washington is after, and the cost savings the Nats would get should help the Brewers out a little bit in negotiations. I'm sure Washington won't let go of Lucas Giolito, but after that I don't think anyone should be off the table. If not Trea Turner, then I want Victor Robles and Erick Fedde, if the Brewers can pull another teen "maybe" in the deal, then get that too. Ramos, Robles and Fedde, the Brewers give up Lucroy, and the Brewers actually add 1.35M to the payroll.
  5. This is almost exactly how I see it. I like Wagner, but the Brewers have more like him, and I have nothing against Segura, but he simply hasn't been a big deal. Whatever becomes of Anderson, this deal is all about some cash for Diaz - with the payroll way down, and the need for young talent, there's no reason to say no to this. Atlanta pulled a ton of young talent out of SD and AZ last winter, with some more from Houston - look at the kids the Brewers have pulled from those same places. Toronto shipped out a lot of kids last season, maybe call them next? Find the teams with that exact opposite mindset, and ask for everybody until you get a deal.
  6. On the young kids, all the teenagers, you are absolutely right. How can anyone know what they'll be in five years at this point? On the, "cast-offs", I'm not sure I agree. I guess it depends on who you mean, and what you're expectations are. I love the approach of grabbing a bunch of high-upside kids, because teams will part with more talent, if it's less proven. Yes, there's risk in that for the Brewers, but the chance to really hit it big on a kid is much greater if you take the high skill set teen over the completely ordinary AA player. I'd roll those dice. On the MLB guys, Aaron Hill was clearly a salary dump by AZ, and for most of the others, I think one good season from any of them would be a win, they're just here to fill the roster while the team is at the bottom. I think Rymer Liriano has a chance to, "make it", I think SD screwed that one up.
  7. In MLB, as opposed to the NFL or the NBA, there are many more questions to ask before you know if a rebuild is working. It isn't just, "What's happening in Milwaukee?" It is also, "What's happening in Colorado Springs?" Biloxi, Brevard County, Appleton, Helena, Arizona, international scouting, and draft prep. Right now, the Brewers have more talent in the minor leagues than they've had since the Sabathia trade, and they'll pick at #5 in June. That's a big deal. Ask yourself this ... If you were a GM who was trying to, "win now", would you be trading major league players, and your best prospects at AA/AAA to achieve that goal? No, the odds are you would not, because you need those players to get it done this year. If you were the GM of a team that's in rebuild mode, would you be hanging on to your best MLB talent, knowing they can walk before you're good enough to contend again, or would you trade them now to get young talent that can come up together and compete when they're ready? The Brewers have pumped a great deal of talent into the system, starting with the 2014 draft, through the Gallardo trade, and then much faster since last July. They're doing what they should be doing. I think the team has a chance to be solid again in 2018, with a better shot at the playoffs coming in 2019.
  8. It will be interesting to see if the Brewers can hold this ranking next year too. Yes, I think some of the kids in the lower levels have plenty of potential to raise their stock, and boost the rankings, but some of the kids at the top level will graduate this year too, which will knock things backwards. Regardless, Brewers fans should be very excited - the new GM is showing a niche for grabbing high upside kids in deals, and the team will have the #5 pick in June. The sign of true success .... send real talent to Milwaukee, without falling off a cliff in Biloxi.
  9. I'm late to the party, but I like the trade. This one fits the recent trend, I love the addition of Isan Diaz, each move is bringing more talented young kids - this is precisely what the team should be doing.
  10. SRB, this young man has always had the tools. Scouts have varied in their opinions on his ceiling, but never on the raw talent. He missed a year to Tommy John surgery, and he didn't do well at the big league level, I'm sure that's where the drop in ranking comes from. I don't care. Prospects lists are a lot of fun, but they also mean nothing in the end - talent is talent, the Brewers made the right call here. Maybe Liriano never puts it together at the MLB level, but if he does, the Brewers will have him right to age 30 - isn't that just about perfect? EDIT: Welcome to the list, young man. http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2015?list=mil
  11. Toby, I was just going to post almost exactly that. This young man has skills, he's been on the radar for a while now, it would take a catastrophic March for the Brewers to let him go. This move may not indicate an imminent trade of an outfielder, but it does make me think one will come before Opening Day.
  12. MLB isn't like the NFL or the NBA - you're not just filling the roster, you're also filling the farm system. To me, "tanking", is trying to lose on purpose - the Brewers aren't doing that, they are trying to improve the talent they've got, and at this point, the way to do that is to get multiple minor league players in exchange for MLB-level guys who won't be under contract when the big team is ready to run. That's not tanking, that's an intelligent use of resources. The Packers or Bucks could trade for an instant impact, but they can't trade for the guy they'll build around in five years. The Brewers can, and the Brewers should.
  13. These moves may amount to nothing, but there's no reason not to try stuff like this. If you're all-in on the rebuild, then keep it coming.
  14. I still like the Rangers for Davis - they want a LF platoon partner for Josh Hamilton, and he could DH when he's not in the field.
  15. I said this in another thread: My guess is, even if Milwaukee and Texas could agree on a deal for Lucroy, both teams will make a deal before that one. I expect Adam Lind and Mitch Moreland to be moved before the larger one, if it were to happen. If the Brewers were to send Lucroy to Texas, here's my offer ... Lucroy and Khris Davis for Joey Gallo, Chi Chi Gonzalez, Yohander Mendez, and someone like Patrick Kivlehan or Ti'Quan Forbes. Texas says they want a righty bat to complement Josh Hamilton in LF, and they want Lucroy ... ok then. http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2015?list=tex
  16. This sort of thing is what the Brewers should be doing - not because this player is going to come in and be amazing, but because there's no reason not to give some young guys a shot. The Brewers will not win this year, and they have holes to fill at the big league level - would you be happier if they gave 3 million dollars to a guy who has proven he can't cut it in the big leagues? Whatever happens with all of this activity, David Stearns deserves credit for getting right to work. All of the trades, and the Rule 5 Draft ... this is a great deal of turnover in a short time. If you're the new guy, and you're here because the organization is choosing a new direction, you should be working to do just that. He is.
  17. If you wanted an, "analytics guy', if you wanted a, "young mind", you have to understand the deal you're making. A new guy, with a different approach isn't going to stick to conventional wisdom, or what some ranking system on a website told him to do, he's going to develop his own plan and go for it. Stearns may bomb for all we know, but there's no track record to judge him by yet. How many of his deals have bombed for the Brewers so far? How many have not?
  18. The only fair response I can give to this is, "I don't know", because until the trade was announced I'd never heard of any of the players Milwaukee got back. With the tiny bit of information I've seen, they all appear to throw strikes ... ok, Sterns likes guys with command. That's a good thing, but what might the future hold for any of these three pitchers - I have no idea.
  19. My guess is, even if Milwaukee and Texas could agree on a deal for Lucroy, both teams will make a deal before that one.
  20. When a 37-year-old pitcher gets 32M guaranteed, you know baseball has stupid money right now.
  21. Plush, you're right, at the time they happened there was a huge difference in media coverage, but since the Rice video, things have changed. I have no doubt, if a team trades for K-Rod, someone will publicly ask the team who gets him about his past. I think GM's, owners, marketing staffs, you name it - would rather avoid the issue. Even so, if you take PED guys as an example now, or cocaine addicts from prior eras, or alcoholics, or whatever else people have done .... if a team thinks they'll win, someone will deal for K-Rod. He's good, it's proven, and he's not on a horrible contract.
  22. 1. Orlando Arcia 2. Brett Phillips 3. Trent Clark 4. Jorge Lopez 5. Tyrone Taylor 6. Gilbert Lara 7. Zach Davies 8. Josh Hader 9. Clint Coulter 10. Devin Williams 11. Kodi Medeiros 12. Monte Harrison 13. Demi Orimoloye 14. Michael Reed 15. Jake Gatewood 16. Marcos Diplan 17. Cody Ponce 18. Wei-Chung Wang 19. Adrian Houser 20. Victor Roache 21. Jorge Ortega 22. Yadiel Rivera 23. Taylor Williams 24. Nathan Kirby 25. Tyler Wagner
  23. I can't imagine wasting any energy being unhappy about the Brewers picking fifth. They'll have excellent options to pick from, and plenty of cash to use on that pick, and anyone who may slide to them in round two. The farm system is much better than it was a year ago, and picking early, it should get another nice boost the next time around.
  24. The Brewers will pick fifth in the 2016 draft, following Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Atlanta and Colorado. I know some of you aren't happy about this, but I am. The Brewers will pick early in a draft with solid depth, and they'll have plenty of cash to use on whoever slips to them in round two.
