  1. Yeah, they use to have about 20 old guys lined up directing cars to there space. When we were younger and a bit more smart alecky, we would stop at every other one and ask them where we were supposed to go. It still kills me now how people still have a hard time following the parking pattern at games...one in front, one in back, one in front, one in back. It's really not that difficult to figure out, yet people still tend to get confused. We could have a whole other thread on people parking at Miller Park.
  2. I don't know the whole history of how the age limit for gymnastics came about, but I would hope that it has something to do with looking out for the welfare of younger children.I don't view it as being "arbitrary" at all. Regardless if it's "arbitrary" or not, it's still a rule. I might view a speed limit in a certain location to be "arbitrary" and decide I'm going to go faster. That doesn't mean that I'm not going to be penalized if I get caught. I don't know how fair the Olympics or any sport would be if you allowed various competitors deciding for themselves what rules they deemed "important" enough to follow.
  3. I'm an XM subscriber. I have a 3 year deal that expires at the end of the year and have not heard any new on how the merger will effect me or what options I will have for programming. I do listen online occasionally. However, I do not believe the main baseball channell (175) or any of the channels that they broadcast games on are available online. I wish I could answer your question about podcasting, but I don't understand any of that stuff. I will say I have enjoyed my xm radio, although I have been having issues lately getting good reception in my car (the FM static has been bleeding through, it comes and goes - better at night than during the day, and seems to really improve if I go into a tunnel.), although up until the last couple of weeks I have never had a problem with reception.
  4. I was at the AL pennant clinching game in 1982, sitting in the leftcenter field bleachers with 2 of my friends. We were Juniors in HS. We all jumped the OF wall and stormed the field after the last out. I swear one of my friends was over the wall before Carew left the batters box. By the time I got over the wall and to the infield it was a mob scene. People were collecting infield dirt and putting it in cups for souvenir purposes. Others were trying to grab the bases. The players were trying to get into the clubhouse. It was pretty much chaos. Then my friends and I hopped on a bus by the VA center and took it downtown. Wisconsin avenue was wall to wall people, high fiving, going nuts. We started at Van Buren and walked all the way up Wisconsin avenue to about 50th street (back near the stadium again) just slapping hands and celebrating with thousands of other fans. I also remember walking down to dunkin' donuts on Hwy 100 and Washington in West Allis after watching the Brewers lose game 7 of the WS on TV and drowning our sorrows in donuts and soda.
  5. Jerry, Elaine, George, Kramer, Newman and basically anyone else on Seinfeld after that in no particular order Archie Bunker Hawkeye Pierce Cliff Clavin Alex Keaton Homer Simpson Dwight Schrute Dr. House Burt Campbell (Soap) Joel Fleischman (Northern Exposure) Ren Stimpy Bugs Bunny I'm sure I'm missing several...but that's all I can think of right now.
  6. Ok sir, I sincerely apologize to anyone I may have offended by calling them a minor league team. Yikes. Instead of taking this repremanding type tone..couldn't you just say. "The Northwoods League is really not considered minor leagues"? The point of my statement was that, minor league or not, there are several players from that league that have gone on to play in the majors and that watching players play purely for the love of the game can be refreshing.
  7. I agree with JohnBriggs. While, I'll agree that Cameron has performed better than I thought he would, if $10 mil is the going rate for an aging, past his prime, OF then the salary structure of MLB is more out of wack than I thought it was. Could he really fetch $10M on the open market? Really?
  8. You do know that most MLB players played minor league ball at some point, right? In fact I think about 25 players who are either currently on active MLB rosters or were at some point this year played ball in the Northwoods league at some point in their careers. Sounds kind of like my father in law who really enjoys watching NFL games but will not watch 1 second of a college game. I always try to remind him that most NFL players played college ball at some point. While, yes, watching the higher quality of baseball that is played in the majors is worth the price of admission, I pretty much enjoy watching baseball at any level. I'll happily spend $5 - $10 to watch guys play their hearts out for the dream of one day reaching the show.
  9. It's 50 yards and 50 meters....not sure why they have to add long and short to the description. I guess in case you don't know that a yard is shorter than a meter.
  10. Wondering if someone can help explain this... My 10 year old son is very interested in swimming and has a little talent in it. He won 25 meter free style last year at a swim meet sponsored by the Waukesha optimist club. Other than that, he has never done any competative swimming. I was looking into local swim clubs on the internet and saw that there is something called a Waukesha Express swim club. They have a link on the site where they post club records and one swimmers name, Kyle Bubolz, is prominent on the record list from the time he was 10 in 1997. So, I was curious and searched him on the internet. It appears he now swims at Northwestern University and they have a bio page for him. What really struck me is that on the bottom of his bio it lists his personal best times. His best time for the 50 free is 19.47?!? http://nusports.cstv.com/...im/mtt/bubolz_kyle00.html The world record for the 50 Free is 21.28? How is this possible? http://results.beijing2008.cn/WRM/ENG/INF/SW/C73A1/SWM010101.shtml#SWM010101 edit: nevermind..I got an explaination...there is a 50 yard short course and a 50 meter long course. Kyle's time was obviously for the 50 yard short course.
  11. Thought I would stick this hear, since it relates to my planning for going to ST next year. Generally the MLB season starts on a Monday (other than the one Sunday night game). When do you think next year's season will start? March 30th or April 6th? I'm guessing March 30th, but I wanted to get other's opinions. The reason this effects my ST plans is that if the regular season starts April 6th, I'm wondering if ST games won't start until March 5th (they usually start around the last Thursday in February). My plan is to go to AZ Feb 28th to March 6th. I don't want to go at that time if games will not be played until March 5th. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  12. If this belongs in the minor leagues section, feel free to move it. Not sure how many people caught this, but living in Waukesha and being very involved in youth baseball in Waukesha, I have been getting a lot of emails about this over the past several months and now it looks like it will become a reality starting next year. I'm pretty excited about this...another local venue to catch some exciting, quality baseball. http://www.jsonline.com/story/index.aspx?id=785786
  13. Yes, it is seniority based. This is one of the reasons I have kept renewing my season tix since 1993, with hopes that it would someday pay off when it came to playoff ticket priority.
  14. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, MLB makes it extremely simple to sell the tickets, would take about 5-10 minutes of their time. That's a pretty good hourly rate. That's just plain crazy. I guess I'm just a selfish jerk. Wow, you are very generous. Depending on the game and where the seats are, that's like handing your family and friends $1000+ . Myself, I can not afford the $3,750 price tag of the my post season seats. So, I will sell one or two of the games to cover the cost of the remainder of games.
  15. Ok, I have been kind of biting my tongue about this for selfish reasons, but I don't understand why anyone would chose plan B or plan C, or why anyone would not want to get their hands on as many playoff tickets as possible. To me it's like someone offering you the rare opportunity to purchase a stock that is guaranteed to at least double, probably triple, or even increase by more in a very short time (go out and look at stubhub already), and you saying "No thanks". Even if you can't afford to go to all of the games (I can't), you can probably sell one or maybe two games and pay for the entire package (and MLB makes it very easy to sell on stub hub - you don't even have to send the tickets). Use a credit card, borrow from a friend, a relative, whoever (I'm assuming if you can afford season tickets, you at least have a credit card with a big enough limit to make the purchase), do whatever you have to do. It's foolish to pass up this opportunity.
  16. At the same time, if, as an usher, you are aware of strict discipline policies, shouldn't this cause you to think twice about how you handle situations. You know..the whole don't do the crime if you can't do the time thing.
  17. Maybe not in this particular situation. However, in general, I look at it like anything else. If you frequent a business and spend a lot of money there, then I would hope that business would take steps to ensure you remain a loyal customer. I have renewed my season tickets through many bad years (after strike years, after 100+ loss seasons, when the Brewers where drawing 1.5 million at County stadium and you couldn't find anyone to even give a ticket to.). I also attend spring training on a regular basis and spend money down in Maryvale. For that loyalty, I don't think it's wrong to expect some "perks" now and then over and above the customer that goes to 1 or 2 games a year.
  18. ahh, I see. I don't have the patience to watch that and whoever is manning the camera is really anoying. Can you pan a little faster? I just want to take over the camera and do it myself. edit: I left the window open on my PC and just went back to it. They are zeroing in on a bird? Really? A bird? Let me know when the lions and tigers show up.
  19. I also am a season ticket holder and I eat peanuts at the game all the time and just throw the shells on the ground. Maybe it's a little different because they are dry shells and not coming directly from my mouth. Also, since it seems like you were standing out in a "public" area and not at your seats, they might have a different policy about disposing of food items on the floor. At any rate, it does seem like the usher could have handled the situation in a friendlier manner.
  20. I don't care how much they say they are friends, it was awkward watching Shawn Johnson and Nastia Liukin interact after the balance beam finals last night. It was clear (imho anyways) that Nastia was not genuinely happy for her "friend" winning the gold. On a side note, I can't believe I'm actually posting something about women's gymnastics (or gymnastics in general), but for whatever reason I tend to watch sports during the Olympics that otherwise I could care less about. I especially have a hard time with sports that have subjective scoring like gymnastics, figure skating, diving, etc. At least with swimming and track, there is usually very little confusion or dispute as to who the winner is.
  21. Yeah, I saw that....but is it really "wildlife"? When the cameral panned up for a second from the warthogs, it looked like there was some sort of stable or something, like it was a ranch of some sort. It also appears that the warthogs are eating something that was placed there by a human.

  23. Ok, I'll clarify my statement. I'm not talking about Frank's grocery store in Mayberry. I'm talking about as a consumer, if you have an option between a check or a check card, I can't for the life of me understand why you would not use a check card unless you are into slow, cumbersome procedures and have no concern about your time or others. I live in Waukesha. I can't think of a business that I have been a customer at in SE Wisconsin (other than Real Chili) that does not accept check cards.
  24. So, you have your check book with you but not your check/credit card? Isn't it easier to carry around a card than a whole book of checks? As I mentioned in another post. I understand when there are times that you have to write a check. However, not in a grocery store (they all take credit or check cards). I use to get on my sister all the time because she would not use a check card. Her argument was that if she used a check card, she would forget to record the purchase. I convinced her that she did not need to record the purchase the instant she purchased something. She could put the receipt in her purse and record it later. She has finally started to use her check card. Until someone can give me a valid reason for using physical checks over a check card, I don't know that it's wrong to assume everyone should us a check card.
  25. I understand this and I use all of what you just mentioned. However, unless you check your account online very frequently and verify every transaction, you still could miss errors, mistakes, and unauthorized charges. Also, no matter how much you check your account, uncashed checks will never show up in your online balance. Since both my wife and I use the same account and make frequent transactions (Gas, groceries, atm, resturuants, shopping, automated billings such as water, electric, mortgage, etc) it's not always easy to just scan online and make sure every transaction makes sense or is posted for the correct amount. Keeping a seperate record and balancing the check book is really the best way to verify that what the bank has as a balance is correct.
