  1. Especially since there's a glut of starting pitching available in free agency this offseason, including severall 2/3/4 starters. More than likely, Doug will pick up one of those guys. Hopefully, given the excessive supply on the market, he'll be able to scoop someone up for a reasonable price.
  2. I really hope Marcum isn't out more than a start as I think he'd be a valuable trade chip. Last year, Edwin Jackson was traded for Rasmus and Marcum is at least the pitcher that Jackson is. If he's out for a long time, we probably can't afford to offer him Arby and would just lose him for nothing.
  3. I read somewhere that the way the Blue Jays use shifts makes Lawrie's defensive stats look really out of whack since he ends up fielding ground balls on the right field side of 2nd base. When shifting, most teams essentially move each guy over while the Blue Jays just put Lawrie in shallow right field and leave the rest of the infielders in place.
  4. Using a rough estimate of $5M per win, he'd need to produce a WAR of 6 over the next two years combined to match the $30M. Not out of the question at all. Even if he's only a 2 win player over the next two years, his contract will be worth it.
  5. I wonder if Washington would make a run at Greinke (either in FA or at the trade deadline). It might make sense for them to trade for him if they are, in fact, serious about Strasburg's innings cap. That would be a sick rotation.
  6. Disagree. Seems more like a Placido Polanco to me. High BA, not much else.
  7. Keep in mind with the comp picks that they'll cost >$1M each to sign whereas a prospect is essentially free and probably closer to the majors.
  8. I dunno... Furcal and Andrus come to mind. Profar might have a little more power potential (sounds like he could end up as a 20 HR guy or so). For what it's worth, I haven't read anything that rates him as plus-plus defense. I'm not saying that's wrong but I haven't seen it. For what it's worth, here is a pre-season scouting report on him that assesses his tools on a 20-80 scale. http://baseballprospectnation.com/2012/02/03/scouting-report-jurickson-profar-ss/ By the way, even if Profar would "just" turn into a .360/.420 SS with good defense, I'd gladly trade Greinke for that (assuming we're sellers)
  9. No Dave Bush mentions yet? Also Matt Wise comes to mind.
  10. Or 3 Walks... same thing.
  11. Nagging injuries are a sign of steroids, right? Tulo for Braun is probably the only one I'd consider but I think it is more-or-less a toss up. Braun probably has the edge on offense but Tulo has the edge on defense. Both are signed to similar contracts through 2020. I'd think about it for Harper but he'll be a Super 2 guy and arby eligible in 2014. Given what he's expected to do and the way the market is going, he might be more expensive than Braun by 2016 (and on another team by 2018).
  12. Not sure it makes sense to trade for Castro at this point. I'm guessing the Cubs would want two top 100 prospects, which we don't really have unless we gave them Thorny and Jungmann. At that point we'd be pretty much screwed if Greinke and Marcum left anyway.
  13. This comment made me think... I wonder if these new rules will hurt the trade market for rentals. Smaller market teams really need to pick and choose whether it's worth it to trade prospects for a rental. In the past, they'd be able to at least get a jump start on replenishing their farm system with the draft picks. In the meantime, the selling team still can get the draft picks if they hold onto the player so they don't really have any reason to demand less in a trade.
  14. Just so I'm clear about this, I assume that when you say 70%, you are referring to the 1-10 ranked position player "Success" rate of 62.7% (not looking at the "Superior" rate). Also assuming that you didn't factor in the Shortstop "Bust" rate at the bottom of 70%. I'm sure you could slice and dice the data a number of ways but I don't think it's unreasonable to think that 50/50 is that far off. Something to think about: If you could trade Greinke for an imaginary prospect (say a shortstop) and you were 100% certain of what you were going to get out of him for six years. Would would be the lowest OPS that you'd be willing to settle for? .750 OPS? .800? By the way, here's the BA top prospects lists going back to 1990. http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospects/rankings/top-100-prospects/all-time.html
  15. If only Ryan Braun would stop hitting home runs...
  16. Toby Harrah played a significant number of games at 2B, 3B, and SS (primarily 3B & SS) and had a .282/.400/.428 line against lefties compared to Loretta's .306/.392/.411 line against lefties. Julio Franco played 1B, 2B, and SS and had a .316/.389/.470 line against lefties.
  17. My post motivated Jungmann tonight. I'm not sure the pitching to contact thing applies so much to Nelson. His worst K/9 rate so far is 7.4 last year which is pretty solid. Regardless, the reason I posted was that there were concerns about Jungmann's velocity at the tail end of his college career. If that was the reason for his lack of K's, I would be very concerned.
  18. Not that it really matters but if you google "Mark Attanasio Investment Banker" there are numerous references to him working in investment banking at Drexel Burnham Lambert.
  19. Molitor has the highest career WAR of any player who has played at least 50 games at each infield position. If you limit it to players who have played at least 100 games at each infield position, Don Money has the highest WAR. Interestingly, it looks like there are only 23 players all time who played 50 games at each position and 5 who have played 100 games at each position. Only Loretta played 200 games at each position. That's pretty cool. Still not on any of my All-Time lists though
  20. Is anyone concerned that Jungman only has been averaging 6 K/9 so far this year? His control has been solid but 6 K/9 in high-A doesn't seem very good for a 1st rounder out of college.
