  1. I'm pretty surprised that they continued with the show. I don't know what they would have done to fill the time, but the show doesn't actually have to go on. I am curious as to who they'll replace him with. I hope it's not just Matthews or Striker. I don't know that they'd bring back Ross to do it (even with the JR appreciation night upcoming), and if not, I hope they consider promoting Regal.
  2. While what you mean by "the equivalent of Wolf" is debatable, I think you missed my point. If the Randy Wolf of 2009 were hitting free agency this offseason, I don't think there's much of a chance that he'd get the deal the Brewers gave him. I'm not saying sign a guy to sign a guy, but the Brewers should be interested in exploiting the rare opportunity of getting value out of a deep free agent pitching class. The offense is set. If you can get a decent deal on a free agent starter that fits in the budget, they would be crazy not to consider it.
  3. Except that that's what was basically being said two years ago. It's groundhog's day in AAA.
  4. The pool of free agent starting pitchers this offseason is about as deep as that pool ever gets. There are at least a dozen guys who the Brewers would not be insane to sign for the right deal. Estrada and Rogers both have inside tracks on the rotation and you'd have to think that Fiers already has a spot to lose. They probably will end up signing at least one FA SP, maybe two, and have Peralta and Thornburg go back to AAA.
  5. Glynn has an 889 OPS in his 9 career plate appearances. Maybe if things don't work out as a pitcher...
  6. Gamel might play in the AFL Gamel would get a "dispensation" that would allow him to play.
  7. I was hoping that the Rattlers would get the services of Clint Coulter for the playoffs. Instead... Brent Dean. No offense to Mr. Dean, of course.
  8. I'd think that both Davises and Burgos are locks. Normally the Brewers might pass on guys like Sanchez* and Wooten, but with the way their bullpen has performed this year, they may not be able to chance those guys getting away. Bucci and Heckathorn could go either way based on AFL play, though Bucci might have to have a poor showing to not make it, while Heckathorn might have to have a good showing to make it. Halton and Prince might have outside shots, though the lack of AFL assignments for the pair is probably telling. *Sanchez obviously had a great season and deserves a shot in the bigs, but I've not gotten the sense that there's a lot of buzz surrounding him as a prospect. He's shorter without a big arm. I'm certainly not opposed to protecting him, I'm just not sure that they will.
  9. Estrada was a guest of the live broadcast yesterday and they asked him about being possibly shut down. He told Craig and Bill that no one has said anything to him about it, and he's planning on pitching the rest of the way. He pitched 150+ innings in 2008 and he's already 29 years old... I don't think the Brewers are too concerned about his innings.
  10. Kintzler makes it back to Milwaukee. Nice to see him make it all the way back from his arm injuries. If he's healthy, he definitely has a chance to be a big part of the bullpen next year. Stats.
  11. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Rogers was pulled to protect his .300 batting average.
  12. I continue to be surprised that they've never had Farris play CF. He has a below average arm, but even then it's still better (and probably more accurate) than Nyjer Morgan's. Farris doesn't have the arm for SS, so naturally they just leave him at 2B where he's hopelessly blocked. Not exactly the best way to get the most out of your available talent.
  13. It may have changed since you read it, but it currently reads "Brewers outrighted RHP Mike McClendon to Nashville Sounds."

  16. Vargas has been an alright reliever at the MLB level. Certainly replaceable, but he's had spurts of worthwhileness as well. It wouldn't be the worst thing in the world for the Brewers to give him a couple of innings this year if he agreed to come back on a minor league deal next year. There are at least a half dozen guys on the 40-man who don't really deserve to be there, so there's not really a premium for 40-man space right now.
  17. You don't really pronounce the "H": ee-RAHM. HI-rum sounds kind of Yiddish.
  18. Really good, and distressing, read. Thank you for posting that.
  19. If I'm not mistaken, they tack on hitless ABs until the minimum threshold is met. If nobody else qualifies at a better average, that person wins the batting title. This is correct, though it is plate appearances, not at-bats.
  20. It's important to keep in mind that Gomez is a Boras client, so signing him to an extension that just buys out a year or two of free agency might not be feasible. And if he's good again next year, he's almost assuredly going to hit the open market at the end of 2013. With Aoki and Schafer and Prince all around, I'd seriously consider trading Gomez if he finishes the season on a hot streak. Maybe sign a cheap RH-hitting CF (Ryan Spillborghs?) to pair with Aoki. Edit: I have no idea what the return on one year of a Gomez is... Emilio Bonifacio or something?
  21. Getting a save on the same day that George Kottaras hit a home run off of Zack Greinke... in the American League.
