  1. As mentioned on the Brewers' broadcast, Shaun Marcum was placed on the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man roster for De los Santos.
  2. De los Santos has one option remaining after this year unless he was added to the 40-man prior to or during the 2010 season. He didn't have to be protected until '11, so I don't imagine that he was.
  3. Somebody asked earlier in the thread... Segura's first name is pronounced like it looks, exactly like "Gene."
  4. This made me laugh out loud. Thank you. Go Mark Rogers.
  5. There's no reason to get rid of Parra. He's a terrible starting pitcher, but a pretty decent reliever. He has a career ERA of 3.82 out of the pen and a 10 K/9, though he still walks too many guys and isn't really a lefty-killer. Not a guy you get rid of just to get rid of.
  6. Hellweg appears to be closing in on an inning limit for the year. He's pitched 30.1 innings more than last year, which was his career high. Remains to be seen how far the Brewers are going to push him.
  7. This is Reyes' first appearance in Maryvale. He spent the previous part of the summer playing for the DSL Brewers. Starting out stateside with a bang, though.
  8. I didn't notice the Zach thing right away, I was hung up on the "will their be." Fixed.
  9. I was thinking about mystery teams as well... with Longoria coming back, Tampa might think they're not out of the race. Greinke would be a huge upgrade over Alex Cobb. Don't know how the money would work, though. Oakland is close to the playoff race as well, but have a solid rotation and again, may not have the payroll. Detroit's starting pitching has been iffy. They came out of nowhere to sign Fielder... why not come out of nowhere to trade for Greinke? The Reds... not the Reds. But they've only used five starters all year. Wonder if they can make it through the whole year.
  10. Last year in spring training (I think?) there were reports of Byrd throwing that hard as well. He gets ground balls, too. Interesting guy that I hope stays in the organization next year.
  11. I think I'll take the dearth of Greinke rumors so far today to mean that a deal is near. No doubt examining contracts. Which apparently they have multiple paper copies of, thanks to the knowledge drop from Haudricourt. And if they need more copies, they can just send Ash over to the mimeograph.
  12. I knew it was pretty much the white flag when we signed Livan - and I still keep forgetting that he's even on the team - but I did not think the season would ever take this turn. Wow. I guess if he closes a bunch of games, we could trade him in August for something. What a nugget.
  13. The BA Prospect Handbook says that Odor can play on either short or second. Haudricourt's latest JS blog states that the Brewers have specifically scouted Martin Perez and righty Justin Grimm. Grimm has a low-middle 90's sinker with a good curve and decent change-up. He was their 15th best prospect coming into the season (Perez was #2).
  14. There are enough teams looking for pitching that a few more trades like Dempster or Shields won't make an impact. The teams that want Greinke are not necessarily the same teams that want those guys.
  15. I doubt a Greinke trade happens on Wednesday or Thursday. The Brewers will give the Phillies time to sign Hamels and maybe let a few other SPs be traded to establish more of a market.
  16. Edgardo Rivera, who at 18 years old may be the fastest player in the organization, has drawn 11 walks over his first 42 pro plate appearances. A fast CF who takes walks? Yes, please. Edit: He drew another walk while I was typing this. Jose Pena with three more walks today as well. Edit: He did, too.
  17. Going by FanGraphs WAR, the Brewers' bullpen has been the 6th worst in baseball entering tonight's action, with a 0.6 WAR. MLB median bullpen WAR is 2.1 and eyeballing it, it looks like the average may be slightly higher. That's about 1.5-1.75 wins (hey, round up to 2 even) the bullpen has cost the Brewers away from average. For perspective, the Royals have the best bullpen WAR at 4.4. Teams worse than the Brewers: Blue Jays, Mets, and then wouldn't ya know... Astros, Cardinals, Cubs. The last three, apart from being in our division, are the only three MLB bullpens with an aggregate negative WAR. Of course, all caveats about WAR apply.
  18. If the Brewers can get creative and sign him for 4/$90mil plus a vesting option at 1/$30mil given 675 innings, I'd love to keep him. He's too good not to try to keep. I have the feeling they'll never get commiserate value, and they aren't that far out, so why not keep him and find out over the next few months?
  19. Deivi Mejia replaces since-promoted Tyrone Taylor in the lineup for the Maryvale suspended game and Taylors it up by hitting for the cycle in 4 ABs, adding 7 RBIs.
  20. The Baby Brewers scored 11 runs in the 7th, which is a weak effort not within spitting distance of their season high for an inning.
