  1. I assume they're keeping Thornburg in Appleton because they want him to finish the first half of the season/playoff push with the Rattlers. They do that on a pretty regular basis.
  2. I just found our first Jorge Lopez quote, translated by Google from Spanish from this article on the Puerto Rican website PrimaHora.com: For Lopez, being selected by Milwaukee in the second round opened the door to a world in which we know you will have to work harder than ever. "Now, I can only work harder to reach the Major Leagues. Just a matter of time and God gives me health to do it, "said Lopez, whose playing style is compared to the Dominican starter Ubaldo Jimenez Rockies.
  3. Courtesy... the Brewers. Kottaras was hitting .343/.432/.559 in Nashville. Nieves wasn't hitting that in Milwaukee.
  4. 9th round CF Malcolm Dowell's signing bonus was $100,000. 10th round LHRP Mike Strong's signing bonus was $25,000.
  5. Kjeldgaard and Khris Davis should both be no-brainers for promotion to Huntsville, with Komatsu (if healthy) and maybe Haydel or Halton going to Nashville. I'd also push Scarpetta, Merklinger, Peralta, Fiers and Hinton (permanently, this time) to AAA, but the Brewers aren't aggressive at all with their pitching prospects, so whatever.
  6. I don't believe anyone here said that? Edit: I'll expand. Baseball America/Perfect Game/et al are not right 100% of the time, or close to it. Projections from Baseball Prospectus/Fangraphs/et al are not right 100% of the time, or close to it. To say "to heck with the statistical approach" or "to heck with the scouting approach" is saying the same thing, really. Not letting in both sides of an argument... well, I don't think that's a good thing.
  7. The Brewers love Farris - I have no problem with him hitting at the top of the lineup - but Taylor Green batting 9th is totally bizarre and nonsensical.
  8. Offense is up, but Nashville is a pitcher's park, especially relative to the rest of the PCL parks. From '06-'08 it was the 9th-most suppressed run environment in the minors. It may have ticked up a little since then, but it definitely isn't a bandbox by any stretch. Green's MLE, adjusted for league factors (I'm not sure if it's from '09 or '10) is currently .264/.329/.461. If he's even close to that, that's an above average third baseman almost every year. If you platoon the two, Green's MLE v RHP is .288/.355/.523 (!!!). I don't totally buy the argument that because he's never faced big league pitching, he'd struggle. It's unlikely he'd maintain his 935 AAA OPS, but there's a good chance he'd be somewhere in the neighborhood of his MLE OPS of 790. And even if he's only able to manage a 700 OPS, well, that's still better than Casey right now. All that said, I have severe doubts that the Brewers would consider replacing McGehee with Green, or even platooning the two. It doesn't send a good message to the clubhouse that the Brewers will give up on a guy who had a .290 career batting average for the first ~1100 AB of his career after 240 AB of this year. And he's not a 605 OPS player. He should be better offensively the rest of the way. Still inadequate defensively and slower than a geriatric snail, but better with the bat.
  9. Green makes routine plays and doesn't have astounding range, but it is ok. Accurate arm, if not the strongest. His knees work. In those senses, he's kind of like the rich man's McGehee on defense. I would not be hesitant to say that Green could best McGehee's 2011 slash of .225/.284/.321, especially if they'd start Casey v LHPs.
  10. This has gotten way too far afield. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Prince is below the literal, technical average in the metrics I was referring to. With the average meaning, the average. And below meaning, below that average. Al is saying the average is not the average, but is somewhere between the majority and almost everyone. Which doesn't make much sense. Hence my point. QED.
  11. Nashville has a neutral to pitcher friendly ballpark. He has an 862 OPS there.
  12. Vanderbilt's "yellow" is significantly different from the mustard asplosion yellow the Brewers pulled out of who knows where last night. I'd at least want to see the yellow pants with the yellow top, and I'm pretty sure blue would have looked a lot better than white. Blue would have bookended with the hats, at least. Grey would have been better, too. Oh, well. Thoughts from my blog.
  13. Unfortunately, the Brewers don't have a pretty decent return to give.
  14. We should have the rest of the player profiles done tomorrow. Sorry for the delay. We lose Patrick and everything goes to pieces. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  15. Same as the poll about Jon Lucroy's defense, please rate Fielder's defense on a scale of 1-10. 1 is bad, 10 is good. The rating should encompass everything he does at first base, from range to scooping, and including taking how the Brewers' shifting might effect him. Thank you!

  21. Don't think it's been brought up yet, but Clint Barmes is decent with the glove and not a hack with the bat. He's also due to be a FA and has an outside chance at being a Type B.
  22. The average point is the mean, but what I'm saying is I have a difficult time saying most first baseman are average. It's like everyone-gets-a-green-participant-ribbon day. It truly is just a few runs - I think Bill James last pegged defense as 12.5% of the game - but, it is a few runs and within the scale of -5.9 to 9.7 (the range of team 1B UZR/150 from 2008-yesterday) and an average UZR/150 of ~+1.9, Prince's -4.1 UZR/150 certainly is not "average" defense for a first baseman. And again, if you watch him play on a regular basis and say he's a typical MLB first baseman, I guess I don't know what to tell you. Anyway, back to Taylor Green. He'll be better than Brantley. I will win in the end.
  23. He's probably improved. It's incorrect to say that he's improved to average. Even using just the past 2.5 years of UZR data (which is less than the 3 years that you should use), he's still 12th of 17 qualified first baseman in UZR/150. Average UZR/150 in that time period is about 0. And Plus/Minus still has him at well below average. Again, if you're calling him average, half to 3/4 of MLB first baseman are average. That's a weird bell curve.
