  1. Callis tweeted to me: Obviously, no guarantees Lindor will be around at 12.
  2. Baseball America has a new mock draft up. This link is for subscribers only. They should have a free version up in a bit. They have the Brewers taking Francisco Lindor at #12 and Sonny Gray at #15. Edit: Here's the non-subscriber link, sans analysis.
  3. Boggs has accepted his assignment to Nashville. Slightly surprising.
  4. What grade, 1 (sub-Estradan) to 10 (fantastically awesome) would you give Jon Lucroy on defense so far this year? I'm asking about the total package: blocking, game calling, throwing, etc. Please take all of that into consideration, and feel free to reply with how he's doing at all those different things.
  5. He's a decent defender whose power has disappeared the past few years. Between power outage and inability to play SS, pass.
  6. To follow up on my last reply, I found where Baseball Reference keeps their IP/GS stat. In 2010, the following pitchers averaged 7 IP/GS or more: Roy Halladay (33 GS) Cliff Lee (28 GS) Felix Hernandez (34 GS) CC Sabathia (34 GS) Adam Wainwright (33 GS)In 2009: Roy Halladay (32 GS) Felix Hernandez (34 GS) Tim Lincecum (32 GS)In 2008: Roy Halladay (34 GS) Cliff Lee (31 GS) CC Sabathia (35 GS)That's six unique pitchers in three years.
  7. If Greinke pitched 7 innings and allowed 3 runs per start - I know you said "or less" but bear with me for a second - he would have a 3.86 ERA. That's quite a bit worse than he's capable of. Even with his "bad" start, I think he finishes the year with an ERA between 3.00 and 3.25. As for 7 innings every start... if you assume 34 starts in a season, that's 238 IP. Pitchers rarely hit that number anymore. In the past three years, only four pitchers have done that. Halladay has eclipsed that all three years, Felix Hernandez two years and Justin Verlander & CC Sabathia have each done it once. I don't think 7 innings every time out for a whole year is a realistic expectation. And yes, I'm sure there are a few more guys that averaged 7 or more IP per start in almost-full partial seasons, but you get my point.
  8. Another start today with a mind-blowing K/BB ratio. 7 IP, 5 H, 1 BB, 10 K. He was able to limit the hits today by keeping the over-eager Nationals off balance. He still didn't have great command of his breaking stuff, and you almost saw that HR he gave up coming, but overall a good outing from ZG. Hopefully, a sign that the tide is turning. That's 3 walks and 39 strikeouts through 28 innings this year, BTW. Not too bad.
  9. Katin isn't on the 40-man RosterI think what joepepsi was saying is: why bring up Rivera over Katin? Rivera had to be added to the 40-man when he came up.
  10. Four pitcher transactions this morning: RHP Mark Rogers has been placed on the Brevard County DL (HT to Jim Breen.) RHP Corey Frerichs has been transferred from Huntsville to Brevard County.RHP Mike Fiers has been transferred from Nashville to Huntsville.LHP Daniel Ray Herrera, recent waiver claim, has been activated on the Nashville roster.
  11. You're right, I misread the primer. Editing. You can’t add the SB value into the UBR rating to negate the rating. That’s already covered by wOBA under the batting values. Sure you can. I'm just talking about baserunning, not overall offensive value there. It would be a mistake to combine wOBA, UBR and SB stuff.
  12. Shameless self promotion: My new blog, with my thoughts on the topic.
  13. FanGraphs now has MGL's Ultimate Baserunning (UBR, listed for some reason as Bsr) metric on their site. The Brewers' team UBR is -2.8 WAR, 5th worst in baseball. Casey McGehee clocks in as the 2nd worst baserunner in baseball with a -4.1 UBR. He's slightly better than Paul Konerko. If the Brewers had a neutral UBR, they would have the 3rd highest team offensive WAR in MLB. Such as it is, FanGraphs has them as the 11th best. Link to the UBR announcement.
  14. The Brewers can't talk to him or his agent due to tampering rules, but he can talk about the Brewers all he wants.
  15. I don't get the "too late" comments. It's not like the team is awash with guys that can play a competent SS. If anything, we're awash with guys that can't play a competent SS at the major league level. If he wants to come back, he won't cost much.
  16. Once he's in Milwaukee, Daniel Ray Herrera will be the first Brewers pitcher since Angel Miranda to regularly feature a screwball, if memory serves.
  17. It appears that our interleague schedule may not be as bad as we thought it was, at least relative to our NL Central counterparts: Larry Granillo article at BP.
  18. Villanueva was unlucky last year. But I'm not comparing this year to last year.
  19. I'm sorry but I'm not buying the "extremely unlucky" assessment. I'm not heartbroken. Opponents are slugging .576 against him. That would seem to be a perfect example of why he's been unlucky. Premier pitchers don't generally ease into a season. Hyperbole. "Premier pitchers don't generally break ribs in the preseason" would be a more correct statement.
