  1. In that money is a discrete resource, the Brewers may not have internally budgeted to spend all of their $6,025,400 international bonus pool. So if they don't sign Turang, they could shift budgeted to money over to the international side and spend more there than planned. I believe that's what he was getting at.
  2. Check that, Meister assigned to Colorado Springs. Slightly different than Maryvale.
  3. Final: Helena 5, Great Falls 4 Fry Sizzles As Brewers Walk Off Voyagers Helena Gets Third Walkoff Win Of 2018 By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers Great Falls, MT - Up 4-3 with two outs in the top of the ninth, the Helena Brewers lead disappeared as three straight Great Falls singles knotted the game up at four. It would be the Brewers that had the last laugh, as with two out and nobody on, Chad McClanahan doubled, and David Fry then followed with a base hit to left center, easily scoring McClanahan to give the Brewers the win. Helena has walked off Great Falls twice in 2018. Great Falls jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead thanks to a two run first inning blast from Lenyn Sosa. It was the first home run that starter Max Lazar had allowed in four starts. Lazar locked in from there, and Helena got him a run back in the third thanks to a Je'Von Ward RBI single. Ward with the hit became the first Brewer to drive in a run in three straight games. Great Falls extended the lead back to two in the fifth, as Ian Dawkins reached on a Jean Carmona error, and scored on a Sosa double. In the sixth, Roberto Delgado came in and ran into trouble, as a walk and a double put runners at second and third with nobody out. The infield came in, and Romy Gonzalez grounded out to second for the first out. Then third baseman Nick Egnatuk made the play of the day, fielding a grounder from Amado Nunez, tagging the lead runner Corey Zangari leaning off of third, and then fired the ball to first for the inning ending double play. Helena got a run back in the bottom of the sixth, as Egnatuk brought home David Fry with a ground out, cutting the deficit to a single run. In the seventh though, the tide turned for Helena, as Bryan Torres started the frame with a single, and pinch runner Yeison Coca got to third thanks to a one out infield single from Jesus Lujano and a throwing error from Sosa. Ward then scorched a ball that shortstop Ramon Beltre couldn't knock down, rolling into left field for a hit and tying the game at three. Jean Carmona then blooped a ball down the left field line for a double, plating Lujano and giving Helena their first lead. Kody Rock (W, 1-0) entered and got the side in order in the eighth, and then retired the first two in the ninth. Amado Nunez kept the game alive with a single, and Gunnar Troutwine followed with one of his own, moving pinch runner Jay Estes to third. Ramon Beltre then hit a chopper to the right side of the infield that slipped through, scoring Estes to tie the game. Rock then got Dawkins to ground out, ending the inning. Jack Maynard (L,0-1) got the first two to start the ninth, and was a strike away from sending the game to extras. Chad McClanahan took a two strike pitch and corked it into the right field corner for a double. That set the table for David Fry, who took a meatball and pounded it into the left center field gap, scoring McClanahan for the win. The Brewers look to sweep the Voyagers in the brief two game series, sending Justin Bullock to the hill tomorrow. Great Falls will counter with Jason Bilous. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM MT. *** *** Helena Box Score Now playing first base almost full time, Chad McClanahan appears to be a lot more comfortable at the plate in Helena this summer. After scuffling to a .234/.339/.315 slash last year (his first half was especially brutal), the big 20-year-old has improved to .323/.413/.538 this year through about 75 PAs. Still 3/4 of the Pioneer League season to go, but certainly promising. I'm not the biggest Je'Von Ward fan, but worth noting that now as he's closing in on 200 PAs as a pro, he's hitting .291. Not much power yet from his 6'5, 190 pound frame but you'd think that will change in the future. Have to remember he was one of the youngest players in the draft last year and he's still just 18. David Fry was the offensive hero and is certainly hitting like a college senior should do in Helena, but we'll see if the catching part of his game works out. Since re-donning the tools of ignorance, Fry has 5 passed balls in 48 defensive innings. He's caught 1 of 4 potential base stealers. Helena Game Log Don't give up on an inning: Helena Bottom of the 9th Defensive Substitution: Adam McGinnis replaces Jimmy Galusky, batting 8th, playing catcher. Pitching Change: Jack Maynard replaces Drew Weston. Je'Von Ward strikes out swinging. Jean Carmona strikes out swinging. Chad McClanahan doubles (6) on a line drive to right fielder Alex Destino. David Fry singles on a line drive to left fielder Logan Sowers. Chad McClanahan scores.
  4. Both are on the 7-day DL (Murphy for Carolina, Lemons for Wisconsin) so they could both pitch "rehab" assignments in rookie ball yet this year if the team chooses. I don't think we know if they are indeed injured or not.
  5. The Brewers would lose the full slot value of the 21st overall pick ($3,013,600) plus the 5% overage they are allowed before hitting a draft pick penalty, which is up to an additional $150,680.
  6. The last unsigned MLB first-round pick was in 2015, Kyle Funkhouser at 35 overall. Between 2016 and 2017, of all the players drafted by all the teams in the first ten rounds, five did not sign.
  7. More than 1/3 of first-round picks remain unsigned. It would be an upset if all do not end up signing. This often goes down to the wire. It is what it is, teams and players both trying to maximize value.
  8. My guess would be that they feel he has things he needs to work on before he's ready for regular playing time at the big league level. Otherwise, one would assume, he wouldn't still be in the minor leagues. While he's having a very good offensive year production-wise, his BB%, K% and CS% have all backed up from last year. The good news: he just turned 23 years old a few months ago.
  9. Minor league FA RHP Christian Meister, mentioned above, has been assigned to the AZL roster but is not yet activated.
  10. Garcia can't technically sign until he turns 16, which is on the 10th.
  11. Orf needs to be added to the 40-man, and the 40-man is full. So it needs to be something other than/in addition to swapping Orf for Wilkerson.
  12. Judging by Bautista's arm and his body size as a 16-year-old, 1B seems pretty inevitable.
  13. Final: AZL Indians2 4, AZL Brewers 1 AZL Brewers Box Score The Brewers score exactly 1 run for the 4th consecutive game as the team's offensive tailspin continues. 2B Jess Williams and SS Luis Avila each had two singles, while DH Micah Bello and 3B Aaron Familia each added a double. Jess Williams has been downgraded from 6'4 to 5'11 according to his milb.com player page. Slight adjustment. Starter Cam Robinson battled his command in the first inning, walking two and allowing two doubles. Without any offensive support, that's all he'd need to give up to be tagged for his first professional loss. Robinson recovered pretty nicely after that, though, allowing only an unearned run over the next 3 innings. Joel Pinto allowed one run in 3 innings of relief and Jesus Brea ran his season-opening scoreless streak to 5.1 innings. AZL Brewers Game Log
  14. Not sure what happened, but Connor McVey no longer seems to be on the AZL roster. He played on June 18th and 19th (hit a HR even), but nothing since.
  15. With the signing of Alescio, the AZL roster is at capacity. Any further draft/UDFA signees (Bryce Turang or Christian Meister, for instance) will either have to go straight to Helena, force someone to be promoted from the AZL to Helena, or simply by placed on the AZL "Restricted List" and basically just be unactivated. The DSL roster is also at capacity. The Helena roster has 6 available slots left.
  16. I've removed the Baran signing from our tracking list. I believe the signing is in fact not finalized - could be a physical issue, could be something else.
  17. After signing, Drew Rasmussen has been assigned to the AZL roster and placed on the 60-day DL. He won't pitch this year.
  18. Final: Helena 5, Great Falls 4 Sunitsch Shines As Brewers Salvage Series Lefty Goes Six Strong For First Career Win By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers Great Falls, MT - In need of a win to avoid getting swept, the Brewers turned to Scott Sunitsch on Sunday against the Voyagers. The lefty did not disappoint, as he went a career long six innings, allowing just three runs on three hits, needing just 63 pitches to get through the outing. Helena's offense scored in four consecutive innings, and Aaron Ashby held off a ninth inning Voyagers rally as the Brewers edged Great Falls 5-4. The Brewers now trail the Voyagers by just a game in the Northern division. Helena struck first in the second, but it did not come without controversy. Je'Von Ward singled with one out, and with Jose Sibrian up with a 2-1 count, Sibrian appeared to have fouled a pitch in and out of the glove of catcher Jhoandro Alfaro. Ward had stolen second on the swing, and was told to go back to first. However, after a conference between the umpires, it was determined that Sibrian did not make contact, and Ward was awarded second base. Two pitches later, Sibrian singled sharply to right, scoring Ward to give Helena the lead. Helena added on a second run in the third, as a leadoff double from Jesus Lujano scored thanks to a sacrifice bunt from Yeison Coca and a sacrifice fly from Jean Carmona. Sunitsch held Great Falls off the board in the first two innings, but the Voyagers put the first four on against him in the third, scoring three to take a 3-2 lead. Ramon Beltre brought home the first run with a double, and Lenyn Sosa then gave the Voyagers the lead with a two run single. The Brewers tied the game immediately in the fourth, as Je'Von Ward hit a solo homer against starter Chris Comito (L, 0-1) with one out. In the fifth inning, LG Castillo whacked a leadoff triple, and scored on a Lujano single, putting the Brewers back in from. Chad McClanahan then added on an insurance run with a two run single. After the third, Sunitsch was on cruise control, as he retired the side in order in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. The only hits he allowed all game came in the third inning. Aaron Ashby entered for the seventh and pitched a scoreless seventh and eighth innings. In the ninth, he struck put Logan Sowers to begin the inning, but a dropped third strike allowed him to reach. A wild pitch moved him to second, and with one out Alex Destino singled him home, making it a one run game and putting the tying run on base. Ashby plunked Ryan Fitzpatrick to move the tying run into scoring position, but then struck out Jimmy Galusky and Jhoandro Alfaro to end the game and leave the winning run at first. He gave up just the one run in three innings, earning the save. The Brewers return home for a two game series against Great Falls, beginning tomorrow night at 7:05 PM. Max Lazar goes for Helena, while Great Falls counters with Codi Heuer. *** Helena Box Score Je'Von Ward cracked his first pro home run as part of a 2-hit night, while Jose Sibrian and Jesus Lujano each added 2 hits as well. Scott Sunitsch was solid for 6 innings, picking up his first pro win and Aaron Ashby turned in the best performance in his young career, including a 4 strikeout 9th inning, to earn his first pro save. Helena Game Log Ashby gets 4 Ks in the 9th, comes back from 3-0 on the last hitter, and hangs on for the save: Great Falls Bottom of the 9th Logan Sowers strikes out swinging. Wild pitch by pitcher Aaron Ashby. Logan Sowers to 1st. Romy Gonzalez strikes out swinging. With Alex Destino batting, wild pitch by Aaron Ashby, Logan Sowers to 2nd. Ian Dawkins to 2nd. Jimmy Galusky strikes out swinging. Jhoandro Alfaro strikes out swinging, catcher Jose Sibrian to first baseman Chad McClanahan.
  19. Final: AZL Cubs2 7, AZL Brewers 1 AZL Brewers Box Score Pro debuts for 2nd rounder CF Joe Gray (1-3, 2B, BB), 9th rounder RF Arbert Cipion (0-4), and 37th rounder RHP Franklin Hernandez (1 IP, 1 H). Unfortunately the offense remained stuck in the mud as doubles from Gray, 3B Jess Williams and C Luis Avalo were not able to overcome 17 strikeouts and just 2 walks at the hands of the Indians' pitchers. Multihit games came from Avalo and 2B Luis Avila. 5th round pick Justin Jarvis made his second pro appearance and first career start, throwing 3 innings of hitless ball, giving up just a walk while striking out three. AZL Brewers Game Log The Luis connection: AZL Indians 1 Bottom of the 3rd Ronny Dominguez walks. Daniel Schneemann flies out to right fielder Arbert Cipion. 20. Final: DSL Brewers/Indians 5, DSL Pirates1 4 DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score The pitching staff managed to hold onto a late lead this time as a big fifth inning proved to be the catalyst for the co-op team's 8th win in 24 tries. CF Reidy Mercado had 2 hits and 2B Elian Gonzalez had a big double in that 5th inning. Moises Ruiz started and went 4 innings, allowing 1 run despite poor peripherals. 22. Joe Gray and Arbert Cipion both making their pro debuts in the AZL lineup tonight. Justin Jarvis making his first pro start.
  23. Silva was assigned to Helena - Antonio Pinero hasn't played there since the 20th and Connor McVey, the first NDFA college infielder the Brewers signed, hasn't played since the 19th for the AZL Brewers.
  24. Final: AZL Cubs2 7, AZL Brewers 1 AZL Brewers Box Score A day after going 2-30, the Baby Brewers' offense barely improves on that by going 3-30. Micah Bello was on base twice and stole two bases. Young Brayan Salaya struggled with command and issued 5 walks in his 3 innings of work. He only allowed 1 hit and held the Cubs to 2 earned runs despite the full basepaths. AZL Brewers Game Log Kind of how the night went: AZL Brewers Top of the 1st Micah Bello walks.
