  2. According to today's box score it appears the Brewers are going to use Starling Javier as a pitcher and not an OF as was originally announced. We'll see if that was a box score error or not.
  3. Final: Helena 3, Billings 2 Coca Caps Off Series With Walk Off Winner Brewers Win In Walk Off Fashion For 2nd Time In 2018 By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers Excellent hair, Yeison. HELENA, MT - The Brewers offense has come up clutch in some of the most critical moments early in 2018, and Sunday afternoon's game against the Billings Mustangs was no exception. Tied at two with a Jesus Lujano on and two out in the bottom of the ninth, Helena second baseman Yeison Coca took a first pitch fastball from Matt Pidich and sent it off the wall, scoring Lujano from first to win the game 3-2. The victory gave the Brewers (5-3) the series victory over the Mustangs (3-5), and their second walk off victory of 2018. Coca helped get the Brewers on the board in the bottom of the first, reaching base on a dropped third strike. He stole both second and third, and scored on a ground out from Chad McClanahan. Helena starter Wilfred Salaman had two Mustangs get into scoring position against him in the second with nobody out, but kept Billings off the scoreboard as he punched out Urwin Juaquin to strand the bases loaded and end the inning. Billings did tie the game in the third on a two out double from Pabel Manzanero, but Salaman limited the damage to just that one run. Salaman allowed just the one run over five innings, surrendering just two hits. The game remained tied at one until the top of the sixth, when Robert Boselli singled against Roberto Delgado with two out and nobody on. He advanced to second on a wild pitch to Juaquin, and Juaquin then singled him home. The Brewers had trouble against Mustangs' starter Luis Alecis, mustering just three hits over five innings, but got to work against the bullpen in the sixth inning. Helena loaded up the bases with one out against Connor Curliss and Andrew McDonald, and Pablo Abreus ground out to third scored the tying run. However, the Brewers would leave the bases loaded, keeping the game knotted at two. In the top of the seventh, the Mustangs threatened to score against Delgado, getting the tying run to second with two out. With Jake Turnbull up and a 1-2 count, a check swing appeal was denied by field umpire Rene Gallegos, resulting in an argument and eventual ejection of Brewers manager Nestor Corredor. Delgado got the strikeout two pitches later to end the threat. Peter Strzelecki (W,1-0) in his first appearance with Helena pitched two scoreless frames, setting the table for the Brew Crew in the bottom of the ninth. Matt Pidich (L, 0-2) walked Je'Von Ward with one out, and Lujano grounded into a fielder's choice, replacing Ward at first. That brought up Coca, who roped the first pitch he saw to dead center field, ringing off the wall and scoring Lujano, giving the Brewers the win. In addition to the walk off double, Coca also stole three bases in the game. The Brewers now welcome in the Missoula Osprey for the a modified four game series beginning with a double header tomorrow at 5:30 PM. Victor Castaneda will start game one for the Brewers, while Blake Lillis will take the ball in game two. Wilfry Cruz and Erin Baldwin will be the starters in those games respectively. *** Photo gallery from the game courtesy of 406 MT Sports. *** Helena Box Score C Jose Sibrian went 3-4 while 2B Yeison Coca and DH Je'Von Ward both walked twice. Wilfred Salaman allowed an earned run over his 5 innings, though he did issue 4 walks against 3 Ks. Peter Strzelecki blanked the Osprey in the 8th and 9th to pick up his first pro win, in his first game with Helena. He was just assigned to Helena on the 23rd after spending a bit of time with the AZL Brewers to begin his pro career. Helena Game Log Walk-off: Helena Bottom of the 9th Defensive Substitution: Carlos Rivero replaces Reshard Munroe, batting 9th, playing shortstop. Pitching Change: Matt Pidich replaces Connor Ryan. Pablo Abreu strikes out swinging. Je'Von Ward walks. Jesus Lujano grounds into a force out, second baseman Francis Azcona to shortstop Carlos Rivero. Je'Von Ward out at 2nd. Jesus Lujano to 1st. Yeison Coca doubles (1) on a fly ball to center fielder Mariel Bautista. Jesus Lujano scores.
  4. Final: AZL Brewers 9, AZL Padres2 8 AZL Brewers Box Score The teams traded crooked numbers but 1 run in the bottom of the eighth would prove to be enough as the Brewers pull back to .500 at 3-3. Pro debut for RF Pablo Garabitos, the recently inked 25th round pick out of a Florida high school. Garabitos did not have a hit, but he did draw a walk in his first pro plate appearance. 2B Edwin Sano continued his AZL onslaught with a single and a double in 5 ABs. Catcher playing DH Kekai Rios notched his first pro hit, a double. In his 8 career PAs, Rios has a double and 5 walks. SS Luis Avila (not to be confused with Luis Avalo or Luis Aviles), just transferred over from the DSL co-op squad, made an impact with his stateside debut, going 3-4 with a double and a triple. Going into last night's game Avila had racked up a whopping 4 extra base hits in his first 442 pro plate apperances, all of them doubles. So the double and triple increased his career XBH output by 50% and raised his career ISO from .010 to .018. Soon a home run? On the pitching side, another pro debut, this one for 5th round pick and RHP Justin Jarvis. He allowed 4 runs on 5 hits and a walk in his 2 innings of work. Johan Dominguez pitched a third of an inning in relief, making his stateside debut after spending the first bit of this year on the main DSL squad. Carlos Luna started and allowed no earned runs in his 2.2 innings. AZL Brewers Game Log The winning run in the bottom of the 8th: AZL Brewers Bottom of the 8th Luis Avila doubles (1) on a fly ball to left fielder Hunter Jarmon. Micah Bello out on a sacrifice bunt, first baseman Jason Pineda to second baseman Tucupita Marcano. Luis Avila to 3rd. Edwin Sano reaches on a fielder's choice out, first baseman Jason Pineda to catcher Jonny Homza. Luis Avila out at home. Jesse Williams singles on a line drive to right fielder Yordi Francisco. Edwin Sano to 2nd. Kekai Rios walks. Edwin Sano to 3rd. Jesse Williams to 2nd. Aaron Familia reaches on a fielder's choice, fielded by third baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza. Edwin Sano scores. Jesse Williams to 3rd. Kekai Rios to 2nd. Caleb Marquez strikes out swinging. Nearly undone in the 9th: AZL Padres 2 Top of the 9th Yordi Francisco doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Anderson Melendez. Angel Solarte grounds out, shortstop Luis Avila to first baseman Aaron Familia. Yordi Francisco to 3rd. Tucupita Marcano walks. With Jordy Barley batting, wild pitch by Renny Tolentino, Tucupita Marcano to 2nd. Jordy Barley strikes out swinging. Jason Pineda walks. Pitching Change: Jesus Brea replaces Renny Tolentino. Alison Quintero grounds into a force out, shortstop Luis Avila to second baseman Edwin Sano. Jason Pineda out at 2nd.
  5. LHP Brad Kuntz placed on the Temporary Inactive List for Biloxi. RHP Michael Brady placed on Colorado Springs' 7-day DL.
  6. The reasons for the DSL roster additions mentioned above is that (at least) two of the players from the Dominican rosters have been transferred stateside and are now playing for the AZL Brewers. RHP Johan Dominguez, a 22-year-old in his third pro season was transferred to Maryvale from the main DSL roster. SS Luis Avila, a 19-year-old also in his third year with the organization, was transferred from the DSL co-op roster to Maryvale. And yes, that means Luis Avila and Luis Avalo are on the same roster again - exciting!
  7. Final: AZL Brewers 10, AZL White Sox 5 AZL Brewers Box Score All 10 runs scored in 2 innings and the Brewers win for the 2nd time in 5 games. 19-year-old Aussie C Alex Hall got his first pro hit in this game, and made it count with a home run to center field. His second hit wasn't too bad either, but it was only a double. 2B Edwin Sano continued his hot start with 3 hits including a double and a triple. He's hitting .500/.550/1.000 through 5 games. AZL Brewers Game Log The big inning: AZL Brewers Top of the 5th Pitching Change: Ramon Pineda replaces Taylor Varnell. Edwin Sano doubles (2) on a line drive to right fielder Anthony Coronado. Micah Bello singles on a ground ball to left fielder Josue Guerrero. Edwin Sano to 3rd. Jesse Williams doubles (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Anthony Coronado. Edwin Sano scores. Edwin Sano triples (2) on a fly ball to center fielder Luis Mieses. Anderson Melendez scores. Francis Florentino scores. Micah Bello walks. Jesse Williams strikes out swinging.
  8. Rasmussen is not on the Beavers' roster and will not pitch for the Brewers this year. Not surprised he signed, but a teency bit surprised he went so far under slot.
  9. Final: DSL Brewers/Indians 4, DSL Dodgers Guerrero 1 DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score Three Brewers pitchers held the Dodgers' guys to 1 hit and 1 run over 8 innings in a rain-shortened game. The game was called somewhat oddly after one out in the top of 9th, but whatever. A win's a win. Starter Moises Ruiz went 5 innings and allowed the sole run on the sole hit with 3 walks and 5 Ks. Claudio Mota and Wellington Nunez allowed no runs, hits, or walks and struck out no one over the final 3 innings. Pitching to contact to the max. Not much to report on the offensive side. RF Reidy Mercado, SS Elian Gonzalez, and LF Vitor Watanabe each had a single. DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log The go-ahead rally: DSL Indians/Brewers Top of the 5th Marlin Made walks. Bryan Connell grounds into a force out, third baseman Jesus Valdez to second baseman Vladimir Perez. Marlin Made out at 2nd. Bryan Connell to 1st. Victor Planchart walks. Bryan Connell to 2nd. With Joseph Paulino batting, wild pitch by Jonny Romero, Bryan Connell to 3rd. Victor Planchart to 2nd. Joseph Paulino triples (1) on a line drive to center fielder Andy Pages. Bryan Connell scores. Victor Planchart scores. Roberto Molina hit by pitch. Pitching Change: Axel Acevedo replaces Jonny Romero. Jesus Maestre out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Andy Pages. Joseph Paulino scores. Vitor Watanabe grounds out, second baseman Vladimir Perez to first baseman Jose Nava.
  10. DSL Brewers game suspended due to rain in the second with no score.
  11. No. The Helena box score doesn't include accurate pitch counts. Pitchers got 1 pitch for a hit or out, 4 pitches for a walk or 3 for a strikeout. Not sure if the tracking system is down in Helena or what.
  12. Final: DSL Rays2 7, DSL Brewers/Indians 6 DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score A late 5-3 lead slipped away and the co-op team loses again. Lots of Brewers contributions on offense. SS Elian Gonzalez went 3-3 with 2 doubles and a walk; LF Reidy Mercado was 2-5, and CF Bryan Dimas/1B Rafael Brito both added a double and a walk. Righty Alexis Ramirez started the game and allowed 2 runs in 5 innings. Daniel Acosta allowed 1 run in his 2 innings of work. DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log Brewer farmhand-lead rally in the 7th: DSL Indians/Brewers Bottom of the 7th Pitching Change: Yosmer Curbata replaces Roybell Santodomingo. Elian Gonzalez doubles (1) on a line drive to right fielder Dahiandy Johnson. Moises De La Cruz singles on a line drive to right fielder Dahiandy Johnson. Elian Gonzalez scores. Bryan Dimas doubles (2) on a fly ball to right fielder Dahiandy Johnson. Moises De La Cruz scores. Bryan Dimas to 3rd on the throw. Reidy Mercado strikes out swinging. Wilfri Peralta reaches on a fielder's choice out, second baseman Alberto Figuereo to catcher Edgardo Rodriguez. Bryan Dimas out at home. With Rafael Brito batting, Wilfri Peralta steals (2) 2nd base. Rafael Brito doubles (1) on a line drive to center fielder Daiwer Castellanos. Wilfri Peralta scores. Bryan Connell flies out to right fielder Dahiandy Johnson.
  13. Final: DSL Cubs2 6, DSL Brewers 5 (10 innings) DSL Brewers Box Score Late comeback couldn't clinch the win and no runs in the 10th sealed the Brewers' fate. The offense managed only 5 hits, though they did work 7 walks as well. DH Francis Casado and 1B Jesus Chirinos each had a double. On the mound, Henry Medina only gave up 1 earned run over 5.2 innings. Joandris Tolentino gave up late runs that necessitated the Brewers' comback. Jose Alberro took the loss despite 3 innings of no hit/no walk ball. Bizarre. DSL Brewers Game Log The fateful 10th: DSL Brewers Bottom of the 10th Juan Frias starts inning at 2nd base. Alwinson Valdez flies out to center fielder Alexander Ovalles. Andres Melendez walks. With Victor Maria batting, wild pitch by Jesus Gomez, Juan Frias to 3rd. Andres Melendez to 2nd. Victor Maria strikes out swinging. Luis Silva grounds out, shortstop Pedro Martinez to first baseman Jeinser Brete.
  14. Ghelfi has since signed with the Angels’ AA affiliate in the Southern League.
  15. Still have not received confirmation from the Brewers that 22nd round pick Joey Baran has signed. Hope there isn't a medical issue holding it up.
  16. Final: AZL Indians2 16, AZL Brewers 10 AZL Brewers Box Score Baby Brewers were completely undone by 4 errors last night as the pitching staff gave up 9 unearned runs. 10 runs from the Brewers' offense was not enough to overcome the defensive issues. The Crew drop to 1-3 on the season, and gave the Indians2 group their first win in 3 tries. One pro debut last night: 39th round pick Caleb Marquez, drafted as a linebacker-esque looking prep catcher out of Missouri, played DH and singled in 4 plate appearances. SS Edwin Sano (mentioned in the post above this one), 2B Jess Williams, and C Luis Avalo all had two hits. Sano and Avalo both hit their first home runs of the year. 3B Aaron Familia doubled and walked 3 times, while C (playing 1B) Bryan Torres and Sano walked twice apiece. Torres was picked off first base, marking the 4th times in 4 games the Brewers have had a runner picked off. They're only 3 for 7 in stolen base attempts as a team, and have run into a number of other outs on the bases. Without going through every at bat, I'd guess that's 12-14 outs on the base paths in the first 4 games. Not good. The aforementioned errors went to Sano, Williams, Familia, and CF Nic Pierre. Avalo also had a passed ball charged to him and there were 3 wild pitches by the staff. Only 3 of the 5 pitchers the Brewers used gave up any earned runs. Mitch McIntyre gave up 4 runs, none earned and Peter Strzelecki gave up one run, unearned. Jesus Brea pitched the only clean inning of the night, a 1-2-3 9th. Starting pitcher Jose Parra was making his stateside debut, and gave up 9 runs, 5 earned, in 2.1 innings. 2017 25th rounder Karlos Morales started the 4th inning and went 2.2 IP, allowing 2 earnies. Despite being a HS-picked AZL veteran, Morales doesn't turn 19 until August and is regarded to have one of the best curveballs in the system. The bad news for the Brewers' staff ERA is that it went up to 6.35 last night. The good news is that despite giving up 9 earned runs in 9 innings, the Indians2's staff ERA *dropped* to 10.38. Yes, two numbers to the left of the decimal point. It could be worse, folks. AZL Brewers Game Log This was good, anyway: AZL Brewers Top of the 6th Jhon Torres remains in the game as the right fielder. Luis Avalo reaches on a fielding error by second baseman Wilbis Santiago. Aaron Familia doubles (2) on a line drive to left fielder Billy Wilson. Luis Avalo to 3rd. Anderson Melendez flies out to center fielder Jonathan Engelmann. Francis Florentino singles on a line drive to center fielder Jonathan Engelmann. Luis Avalo scores. Aaron Familia to 3rd. Caleb Marquez singles on a line drive to left fielder Billy Wilson. Aaron Familia scores. Francis Florentino to 3rd. Caleb Marquez advances to 2nd, on a fielding error by left fielder Billy Wilson. Bryan Torres singles on a line drive to right fielder Jhon Torres. Francis Florentino scores. Caleb Marquez to 3rd. With Edwin Sano batting, wild pitch by Luis D. Garcia, Caleb Marquez scores. Bryan Torres to 2nd. Edwin Sano walks. Nic Pierre doubles (3) on a line drive to left fielder Billy Wilson. Bryan Torres scores. Edwin Sano scores. Jesse Williams grounds out, pitcher Luis D. Garcia to first baseman Henderson De Oleo. Luis Avalo grounds out, shortstop Gionti Turner to first baseman Henderson De Oleo.
  17. Yah, on Twitter the other day I guessed they'll fail to sign 15 guys. That's 3 more than last year and also more than I can recall since the draft went down to 40 rounds.
  18. Everyone is not, in fact, in action. Helena rained out.
  19. Final: DSL Brewers/Indians 10, DSL Rays2 9 DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score The co-op's offense was able to overcome the pitching staff's best efforts to lose the game in a back and forth affair, giving the team their 4th win in 17 games. RF Bryan Connell had a huge day, hitting his 4th and 5th home runs as well as adding a single. I wouldn't be surprised to see Connell stateside soon as the 19-year-old is just obliterating DSL pitching to the tune of a 1342 OPS through about 45 plate appearances. In addition to the 5 home runs, he has 10 walks against 9 strikeouts. Another Brewers farmhand, 3B Rafael Brito, joined the fun by hitting his first home run on the year as part of a 2 hit, 1 walk day. C Luis Valderrama got his first professional hit, a line drive single in the 5th. CF Reidy Mercado singled and walked in 5 trips to the plate. Only one Brewers pitcher was used, righty Ricardo Velasquez. It was a pretty good outing too, as he allowed no earned runs in 3 innings of work. DSL Brewers/Indians Game Log The winning run: DSL Indians/Brewers Top of the 9th Alberto Figuereo remains in the game as the designated hitter. Marlin Made doubles (2) on a line drive to center fielder Daiwer Castellanos. Bryan Connell singles on a line drive to center fielder Daiwer Castellanos. Marlin Made to 3rd. Offensive Substitution: Pinch-runner Bryan Dimas replaces Bryan Connell. Joseph Paulino strikes out swinging. Carlos Gomez intentionally walks Rafael Brito. Bryan Dimas to 2nd. Jesus Maestre singles on a line drive to pitcher Carlos Gomez. Marlin Made scores. Bryan Dimas to 3rd. Rafael Brito to 2nd. Luis Valderrama pops out to first baseman Robert Valera. Moises De La Cruz grounds out, third baseman Amador Arias to first baseman Robert Valera.
  20. Final: DSL Brewers 10, DSL Cubs2 2 DSL Brewers Box Score Your 1st place DSL Brewers win again, clobbering the second DSL Cubs team 10-2. The top three in the order (outfielders Larry Ernesto, Oswel Leones, and Carlos Rodriguez) went a combined 7-13, including an Ernesto triple and a Rodriguez double. 2B Francisco Gonzalez also contributed a double and a walk. Starting pitcher Wilber Perez was fantastic until he seemed to run out of gas in the sixth. Perez wound up throwing 5.2 innings and allowed no earned runs on 2 hits and 2 walks while striking out 9. Both walks and both of his wild pitches occurred in the 6th inning. DSL Brewers Game Log The fifth inning gave the Brewers what turned out to be an insurmountable lead: DSL Brewers Top of the 5th Victor Maria grounds out to first baseman Miller Chacon. Farlyn Manon reaches on a fielding error by third baseman Pedro Martinez. Francisco Gonzalez walks. Farlyn Manon to 2nd. Pitching Change: Sucre Valdez replaces Johan Lopez. Daniel Castillo singles on a line drive to left fielder Rafael Herrera. Farlyn Manon to 3rd. Francisco Gonzalez to 2nd. Larry Ernesto triples (1) on a line drive to center fielder Brailin Pena. Farlyn Manon scores. Francisco Gonzalez scores. Daniel Castillo scores. Oswel Leones out on a sacrifice fly to center fielder Brailin Pena. Larry Ernesto scores. Carlos Rodriguez lines out to third baseman Pedro Martinez.
