  1. Final: DSL Brewers/Indians 14, DSL Pirates1 13 DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score This was about as DSL as the DSL gets. The co-op team won despite losing the hit column 21-8. Of the 8 hits the offense managed, none were by Brewers, who went a combined 0-16 with 5 walks. Ouch. And only one Brewer pitcher was used - Ricardo Velasquez got the final out of the game, stranding the bases loaded after walking in the 13th Pirates run. The complete list of ERAs from pitchers used in this game: 7.84, 6.75, 10.32, 15.09, 1.69 (Velasquez!), 3.21, 6.66, 5.68, 16.55, 13.50, 5.40. 2. Final: DSL Tigers1 3, DSL Brewers 0 DSL Brewers Box Score Three early runs were all the Tigers needed and three scattered singles were all the Brewers could muster as the team gets shut out for the third time this season. Starting pitcher Jose Romero gave up all the runs in 4.1 innings of work. Abner Uribe continued his impressive young pro career with 1.2 scoreless innings. 16-year-old Robert Ortiz made his pro debut and worked a clean 9th. DSL Brewers Game Log
  3. *I should have said 40-man long-shot. All three "long shots" I mentioned would be eligible for the Rule 5 draft in December. Plus obviously, Gatewood and Ponce are, too.
  4. This is probably the closest I've seen to what a Dozier deal should look like. I don't think the Twins are going to get a huge premium on "second half Dozier." I wouldn't even say Ponce or Medeiros, my offer would be Gatewood, Ponce, and a long-shot. Jon Perrin, Brad Kuntz or Jorge Ortega maybe.
  5. Villalobos was born on 10/17/00 and was placed on the DSL's Restricted List. He is eligible to be activated this year. Villalobos was transferred to the co-op squad and activated today.

  7. Final: Helena 9, Idaho Falls 2 Castillo Celebrates Birthday With Big Win Helena Outfielder Drives In Three With A Two Run Homer By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers Helena, MT - Celebrating his 19th birthday with his parents in town for the first time in 2018, Brewers outfielder LG Castillo put on a show. The Buffalo, NY native drove home three, including a two run homer, helping the Brewers snap a three game losing streak with a 9-2 win over the Idaho Falls Chukars. Helena starter Wilfred Salaman (W, 3-1) worked in and out of trouble in the first two innings, stranding runners at the corners in the first and forcing an inning ending double play with the bases loaded in the second. Meanwhile, Chukars starter C.J. Eldred (L, 3-2) had the Brewers fooled early on, retiring the first ten batters he faced. With one out in the fourth, he allowed his first hit, a first pitch double to Jean Carmona. Chad McClanahan flew out to center to move Carmona to third. David Fry singled home Carmona to make it 1-0 Helena, and Eddie Silva followed with an RBI double of his own to extend the lead to 2-0. That brought up Castillo, who blasted a fastball from Eldred to dead center field for a two run homer, giving the Brewers a four run lead. Idaho Falls countered with a two run fifth inning, highlighted by an RBI double from Nate Eaton and an RBI single from Reed Rohlman, but the Brewers responded in a big way in the bottom of the frame. With two on and one out, Carmona singled home a run, and then McClanahan drove one home with a sac fly. Fry doubled to score Carmona, and Silva doubled to plate Fry. Castillo then delivered again with a scorching single to left, bringing Silva home to make it 9-2. For Castillo, it was his fifth straight game with multiple RBI, and now has a career best nine game hitting streak. Salaman earned his third win with five innings of two run baseball. He is the only Helena starter to complete five innings in every start, and has not allowed more than two runs in any start. The Brewers bullpen combined to shut out the Chukars over the final four innings, as Roberto Delgado, Chad Whitmer, and Peter Strzelecki combined to allow just two hits. Helena returns to action tomorrow as Blake Lillis returns to the hill, looking for his third win. Idaho Falls counters with 2018 1st Round selection Kris Bubic. First pitch is at 7:05 PM *** Additional game story and photos from 406 MTN Sports. Includes our first look at Luis Avila. *** *** Helena Box Score Helena Game Log
  8. LG Castillo joins in on the fun with his 3rd home run in the last 4 games. Also happens to be his 19th birthday, so happy birthday bomb LG!
  9. Per me, OF Bryan Connell has been promoted from the DSL co-op squad to the Helena Brewers. It will be the 19-year-old Panamanian's first taste of stateside ball.
  10. Fighter pilot - the Air Force Academy is just outside of Colorado Springs.
  11. Pass on that. Between Merrifield turning 30 in January and Hiura doing well in AA, I don't think Merrifield brings enough marginal future value to sacrifice the long-term value of those three guys.
  12. Jeff Ames was drafted by the Rays 10 picks after they took Jake Hager in the 2011 draft. Hager was a 1st rounder, Ames a Comp-A rounder. Matt Arnold had a hand in bringing them together back in 2011, and now again in 2018.
  13. Final: Colorado Springs 11, Round Rock 10 SKY SOX WALK-OFF IN BACK-AND-FORTH DUEL WITH EXPRESS (click the link for many game notes not covered in the story below) COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox won 11-10 in walk-off fashion over the Round Rock Express Tuesday night at Security Service Field in a back-and-forth duel. Jake Hager and Domingo Santana highlighted the night offensively. Hager finished off with a five-hit night including scoring the game-winning run after his ninth-inning double while Santana hit two home runs in big situations. Despite the 11 walks surrendered by Sky Sox pitching, the bats made up for it as they posted a season second-highest 19 hits. After the first inning, the only quiet frame of the contest, the Express broke out first with three runs in the top of the second. Willie Calhoun led off with his 28th double of the season while two outs quickly followed. With Calhoun on third, a wild pitch during Hunter Cole's at-bat allowed the run to score to make it a 1-0 game. Cole would walk and three consecutive singles by Juan Centeno, Hanser Alberto and Drew Robinson manufactured the two additional runs to extend to a 3-0 lead. In the bottom half of the second, the Sky Sox battled back with a run to get within two, but stranded more in the situation. Christian Bethancourt led the inning off with a single off of the centerfield wall while Shane Opitz doubled and Andres Blanco drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Quintin Berry struck a line drive toward the right-side hole but first baseman Alberto made a quick-reaction catch to save a run. Hager clutched up with a two-out single to plate one before Orlando Arcia grounded out to end the frame and strand three on base. In the third, each side would trade for a solo run to keep it at a two-run ballgame. But in the fourth, Round Rock added an additional run after Drew Robinson doubled and scored after advancing on two wild pitches to take a 5-2 lead. The Sky Sox broke out and rallied in the bottom of the fourth to take their first lead of the game. After Blanco led the frame off with a single and Berry flied out, Hager, Arcia and Tyrone Taylor knocked consecutive singles to get within one of the leading Round Rock squad. Santana followed suit with a big fly, his first with the Sky Sox, out to right field to give the Sky Sox the 7-5 advantage. In the top of the fifth, Round Rock evened things back up at 7-7 on three singles in the inning. In the top of the sixth, they regained the 8-7 lead on Carlos Perez's two-out single to centerfield. But, in the bottom half of the frame, Santana came in the clutch once again with a leadoff solo home run, his second of the night, to tie the game at 8-8. The back-and-forth action continued into the seventh inning when Round Rock took the lead again. Centeno singled to start the frame while Robinson walked to put the go-ahead run into scoring position. Cliff Pennington came up with another single to left field and an error in left field allowed Centeno to score to give the Express a 9-8 advantage. A two-out wild pitch plated the 10th run for the Express. Once again, the Sky Sox retaliated to bring the game back to even at 10 apiece in the bottom of the eighth. With one out, the red-hot Santana drew a walk and Bethancourt singled behind him. Bandy then struck a sizzling double down the third base line for his second of the game to clear the bases at tie the game at 10-10. In the ninth, after the Express stranded the bases loaded to keep the game even, the Sky Sox came up with a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Hager sparked the inning on his fifth hit of the night with a double to right-center. After Arcia was intentionally walked, Taylor knocked the game winning single to left field to make it a final 11-10 victory. The Sky Sox head into game three of the series tomorrow with a 2-0 series advantage. First pitch at Security Service Field is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Following this home series, the Sky Sox hit the road to Memphis for a three-game set against the Redbirds. *** Colorado Springs Box Score What may be the most impressive team stat beyond the 11 runs and 19 hits is that the team only struck out twice. Five hits from Jake Hager, 3 hits apiece from Orlando Arcia and Christian Bethancourt, and obviously Domingo Santana with the much needed pair of long balls. Colorado Springs Game Log
  14. I would kindly ask everyone to cease any mentions of David Stearns’ “stones” - which is a sentence I never foresaw myself typing.
  15. I'll help out. Here you go: - Brewers love Machado and have made a very good offer. The names tossed around include Phillips, Ortiz, Burnes, Lutz, Woodruff, Arcia, Bando, T. Williams, Houser, Peralta, Ray, Erceg, Dubon, Gatewood, Brown, Nottingham, Stokes, Carmona, Medeiros, Ponce and a few others. That's just a preliminary list - I'm guessing some other guys have been talked about. 50% chance we get something done. - Brewers won't include top prospects such as Hiura - but you never know if that will change. - Brewers don't want to increase their offer any more except for if they have to. It's coin flip that we increase the offer. - Phillies have made a good proposal. Brewers might have to increase their offer to beat, but maybe not. It's toss up that we don't have to increase the offer. - Yankees made an offer but not good enough - 50% chance that could change. - Dodgers had a proposal but it was rejected. 50/50 they may come back and try again. - Between 2 and 29 other teams have inquired on Machado. - O's will wait until after the all-star break to announce trade. But that may change if they feel they can get more by waiting. Odds are about even that things get wrapped up this week. - Orioles have been scouting Brewer players. 50% chance the Orioles scout Brewer players and eat peanuts at the same time. - Mark A wants to go 'all in' but Stearns does not. If a deal is done, that means Mark A won the battle. If not, then Stearns did. Even money that Stearns wins this one, but you never know. - Come back later tonight and I will scramble all these things up, re-word slightly, and add some random percentage points. Of course, I'm leaving and never coming back if anyone questions me. Never means about 50%. Any thinking man can see that you have inside sources, and I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter. Well done, both of you. I see what you did there Peavey.
  16. The DSL teams both played this morning and the Sky Sox play tonight during the All-Star game for some reason. Everyone else is off.
  17. Generally, yes. Teams keep medical documentation on all of their players, everything from physicals to MRIs, x-rays, etc. These are usually sent for review to the trading partner's medical staff, who will review the information on their end. Different clubs have different philosophies on what would disqualify a player from being included in a trade. The Mets had an issue with Carlos Gomez' hip x-ray (IIRC) - the Astros clearly did not. It's worth noting that Baltimore has probably the most difficult physical to pass in the industry, so any player they trade for will go under plenty of scrutinies.

  19. Final: AZL Padres2 3, AZL Brewers 1 AZL Brewers Box Score Sloppy game for the Brewers as they commit 6 errors and go 0-9 with runners in scoring position. Brice Turang on base two more times with a single and walk; he stole his second base as well. The only pitcjer to give up an earned run was starter Freisis Adames, who went 3.2 innings allowed said run on 2 hits and 2 walks. Adames struck out 3. Rehabbing Christian Meister made his second AZL appearance and allowed an unearned run on a passed ball and two wild pitches after a bunt single. So it goes. AZL Brewers Game Log
  20. Final: Ogden 10, Helena 7 Raptors Score Ten Unanswered To Sweep Brewers Helena Loses Three Straight For First Time In 2018 By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers Ogden, UT - On another warm night in Ogden, the Helena Brewers couldn't contain the Raptors offense. With the game tied in the fifth, Ogden scored ten straight over the next three innings, cruising to a 13-4 win over Helena. The Brewers have lost three in a row for the first time this season, and are now four back of Great Falls with just seven games left in the first half. Ogden scored first for the first time in the series, as three straight singles brought home a run in the first inning. Brewers starter Justin Bullock worked in and out of trouble in the second, and appeared to be out of trouble in the third with two on and two out, as Jair Camargo hit a blooper to shallow right center field. However, miscommunication allowed the ball to drop and two runs to score, extending Ogden's lead to 3-0. Helena fought back to tie the game in the fourth, as a leadoff double from Jean Carmona scored on an error, as first baseman Dillon Paulson dropped a ball hit to pitcher Jose Chacin (W, 4-0). David Fry, the batter, got to third, but his advancement was a moot point as LG Castillo hit a two run blast to left, his third of the year, tying the game at three. It remained tied going into the bottom of the fifth, but Brandon Presley (L,0-1) issued a leadoff walk to Dillon Paulson, and Matt Cogen followed with a two run opposite field shot, giving Ogden the 5-3 lead. From there, Ogden blew the game open, scoring three in the sixth and five in the seventh. Castillo drove home a run with a single in the eighth, but it was too little too late for Helena, who will play four game series against the Raptors at Kindrick Legion Field on Saturday. Your Helena Brewers return home on Wednesday for a three game series against the Idaho Falls Chukars. *** Helena Box Score Helena Game Log

  23. That's fine, but no serious professional analysis I have found has used the word "bust" with Ray. There is a whole lot of territory in-between "elite" and "bust" - it's not a binary choice. The word "bust" has a pretty distinct connotation that comes along with it. He's not that, or even approaching that. And I would call his defense solid, especially in the corners. He's probably never going to win a Gold Glove in center, but he's been fine there from what I've seen. Certainly not a Corey Hart or Mark Kotsay running around out there.
  24. Don't recall seeing it being mentioned elsewhere, but Mike Zagusrki was outrighted and accepted his assignment to Colorado Springs. He's on the Sky Sox' active roster.
  25. SS Antonio Pinero's season is over now that he's been placed on Helena's 60-day DL. I don't believe we ever heard what the injury is, but he last played on June 20th. 19-year-old SS Luis Avila began the year with the DSL team, was promoted to the AZL on June 24th, and now has been promoted again to Helena. Joining Avila in Helena is C Mike Alescio. He was signed as an undrafted free agent out of Seton Hall on 6/29 and had played 3 games in the AZL before being moved up to Helena. The Helena roster currently stands at 31, 4 under the league limit. The AZL roster stands at 33, with 2 under the limit but those spots will be filled pending the activations of 13th round RHP Reece Olson and 24th round RHP Wade Beasley.
