  6. McGehee homers, while Green strikes out with runners on base. Typical. Better not leave the bench cushion at home, Rook.
  7. The criticism of Kotsay's performance does seem a bit out of place in the discussion of whether Gamel should have been called up by August 31. Kotsay's stats below (as of SEP 18) are why he always had a roster spot wrapped up for the playoffs: Hitting Stats as a RF or PH[/b] Split G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI SB CS BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS TB GDP HBP SH SF IBB ROE BAbip tOPS+ sOPS+ as RF 29 107 99 7 30 8 0 1 7 1 0 8 7 .303 .355 .414 .769 41 2 0 0 0 3 1 .319 122 98 as PH 43 43 40 4 11 1 0 0 8 0 0 3 8 .275 .326 .300 .626 12 2 0 0 0 0 0 .344 82 107 Hitting Stats vs. Relief Pitchers (1st AB) [/b] Split G PA AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB SO BA OBP SLG OPS TB GDP HBP SH SF IBB ROE BAbip tOPS+ sOPS+ vs. RP 81 98 86 10 26 3 0 0 14 11 15 .302 .378 .337 .715 29 2 0 0 1 3 0 .361 109 108 There is very little to criticize with Kotsay’s performance as a 5th outfielder and a pinch hitter. The real question concerning Gamel and a call up in time for the playoffs was this: Who brings more value to the team in a playoff situation, Wilson as a 15th position player, Gamel as a 15th position player, or Estrada as a 11th pitcher? If someone says that Gamel is the best option of the three, I would have a hard time disagreeing with that. But direct comparison between Kotsay and Gamel just doesn’t seem to be very relevant to the question of whether Gamel should have been on the roster by August 31.
  8. Pinch hitting for a player with a chance for a cycle. Is that like pulling a pitcher with a no-hitter in the 8th?
  9. Vandy does seem out-of-place in the SEC, which is a football-first conference. If it moved to the ACC, then Vandy could match up well with Duke, Wake Forest, and Boston College which are similar types of universities. It would also be one of the schools that emphasizes basketball over football, like Duke and Wake Forest, and to some extent, Maryland and Virginia. The long-standing rivalry against Tennessee could be maintained as an annual non-conference game, along with playing Memphis. With the ACC schedule in football, the need for the non-conference games to be fully-competitive would be lowered.
  10. Back-to-back wins in Cincinnati after losing 5 games from the division lead. I dreaded this series, given the Brewers' poor record in GABP. These last two performances show that it's definitely the Brewers' year in 2011. So different from past seasons, it's strange!

  12. Looks like Keith Ginter will once again have limited playing time......in the Magic Number Thread.
  13. Phillies turn a bad play by Furcal into 5 two-out runs: 9-2 now in the 8th. (Edit: TV has now shown the chilled champagne reach the Phillies locker room.)
  14. Mark Kotsay, Professional Hitter. Pinch hitting with RISP is definitely his niche on this roster.
  15. Braun to left for 3 runs. MVP. MVP. MVP. Way to break the game open and get Gallardo run support.
  16. Brant Brown (excuse me) Corey Patterson with a drop in RF. Life for the Phils.
  17. 2nd HR for Braun. Good way to start the closing stages of the MVP race.
  18. Kottaras homer! Opa! Need more insurance runs in the Cincinnati bandbox.
  19. Back-to-back homers on first pitches. Kotsay and Braun. Keep teeing off on this guy.
