  1. It's hard for me to say any given play was the best ever, as there are so many factors that can go into it. But, the most memorable plays that I can think of are the aforementioned Bill Hall catch of the deflection from Corey Koskie, a JJ Hardy diving catch of a liner that took him right to 2b to double a guy off, the first Rickie Weeks behind the back flip to Hardy for a force at second, and Geoff Jenkins throw from the LF wall to Overbay in the air to double a guy off.
  2. I don't know that I'd call the Feliz signing bad per se, but he sure hasn't worked out so far. At the time it seemed like a medium/low risk, medium/high reward potential. Since it's a 1 year deal, it's not a crippling signing by any means. Just unfortunate that he hasn't put up results.
  3. His walks actually went up in May, his OBP raised more than his AVG did. But you are correct that his power dropped off significantly, and not just in HR. All his XBH totals are half or less from April, in May.
  4. I'm not sure why you say D isn't supposed to be variable. He's had a few miscues in the first couple months, but it seems like his range and jumps are still there. Just a few plays in a year can still make a big difference in defensive metrics and we're only a couple months in. On standard fielding stats, he had no errors last year in 511 innings, but this year he has 3 already in 422.2. If he cuts back on the errors the rest of the way, whether advanced or standard stats, his defense is going to look better. Edit: I misread the columns, he had 4 errors last year and only 2 so far this year. If you go by Inside Edge fielding stats on Fangraphs, he's coming out as slightly worse on the routine plays (2017 - 97.8% of 89 plays, 2016 - 98.6% of 140 plays), but actually better on the non-routine plays. So, I think his defense is still pretty strong, and it's just not showing up in how Dwar is measured yet.
  5. It's not though. It's thrown exactly like a fastball just the fingers are off center. Go outside tomorrow and throw 50 cutters. Then get back to me. Throwing 50 of any pitch is hard on your elbow, especially if you're not a trained pitcher.
  6. Per MLB Gameday preview: LAD 1 Forsythe, Logan 3B 2 Seager, Corey SS 3 Taylor, Chris CF 4 Gonzalez, Adrian 1B 5 Bellinger, Cody LF 6 Grandal, Yasmani C 7 Barnes, Austin 2B 8 Hernandez, Enrique RF 9 Maeda, Kenta P MIL 1 Sogard, Eric 2B 2 Thames, Eric LF 3 Aguilar, Jesus 1B 4 Shaw, Travis 3B 5 Santana, Domingo RF 6 Pina, Manuel C 7 Broxton, Keon CF 8 Arcia, Orlando SS 9 Davies, Zach P
  7. Since we've had 2 decent starts going into this, the bullpen shouldn't be overworked. Maybe be happy with 6 good innings from Davies even though his pitch count is pretty low?
  8. There isn't even really 1 ace per team at the major league level, so to think that any team could draft an ace every 3 years seems to be a stretch. If you just mean potential to be an ace, one could argue that the brewers have drafted at least one every 3 years or more who had the potential, but have just not actually hit on any since Ben Sheets due to various factors already discussed in this thread.
  9. I thought I read at some point in time that double plays are as much or more an indication that your team is allowing a lot of base runners than an indicator of good defense.
  10. I know Anderson has not been very good his last 2 starts, but a few people have posted now in ways that suggest he's been as awful as Peralta has been. I'm a little confused where this is coming from, other than the last two starts?
  11. Villar in May, while still not lighting the world on fire, has been solid enough that I don't feel an urgent need to push him down in the order. I do think that giving him a few more days off here and there than what he's gotten so far wouldn't hurt.
  12. I'm curious. Why would you have Anderson be the next up for demotion after Peralta, when he has basically been the Brewers best starter overall this year? I get that his secondary stats are pretty similar to Nelson's, so it seems he's been a little bit lucky, but if Davies doesn't start putting things together soon, I think he would have to be next in line for demotion after Peralta.
  13. The brewers may not be able to get anything for Feliz at the deadline, but I am not overly concerned. I'm one of the believers that the "closer" isn't truly the most important bullpen spot, so if having him be the "closer" let's Counsell mix and match his other relievers a little bit based on who's hot for the 6/7/8 innings then it's not that bad of a thing to have the lesser reliever be the closer. If, at the end of June, he is still having too many bad outings then cut the losses and put him on waivers to see if anyone might at least claim him to save some salary. If he turns it around and has at least a solid month going into July, even if his overall numbers aren't great, they would still probably be able to trade him for some sort of low level prospect.
  14. I know the Brewers in the past have preferred to fill the bench with veterans, but I think it makes a lot of sense to have a prospect take on the 4th outfielder role. Having a cheap bench let's you spend money elsewhere. I don't think you want to have your top prospect take that role necessarily, but if you commit to getting them at least 250-300 ABs in a rotation in all the spots (assuming they are an above average defender even in CF) then I don't think it's a waste to have them up in that role. Considering the flexibility they are going for on the bench, I don't think they even need a 5th OF on the 25 man, if they continue having someone like Perez as a backup IF/OF going forward.
  15. I think it's in his contract that he has to walk the leadoff hitter.
  16. Maybe the easiest way to get Betts out is to walk him, and get Pedroia to hit into a DP.
  17. Did everyone see the video of all his homers? The brewers need to get the #42 to come over just to do HR celebrations with him!
  18. On Dexter Fowler's ground rule double, the ball got stuck under the padding of the wall. I was under the impression that those kinds of balls are still in play, and that this greatly contributed to a Brewer getting an inside the park home run a few years back? Is this no longer the case, or am I just remembering incorrectly?
  19. I don't see how Aoki would be a moneyball play really. I guess the posting bidding came out cheaper than expected, but that's about all I can see there. Regarding Izturis, getting some guys in on minor league deals with major league invites is something Melvin does every year.
  20. According to the MLB.com article, the first test occurred during the playoffs. However, nothing has been declared yet as to when the 2nd test was performed. From what I've been reading on the internet, from a few different sites, synthetic testosterone (steroids) will remain in the system for ~7-10 days. If the 2nd test was performed fairly quickly after the first, then there is some hope from this. If it was much more than a week, then it probably contributes nothing to his defense. I will wait to reserve judgement until all facts in the matter have been presented. It's disappointing that people felt the need to leak confidential information like this before it's official. If he did do it, then handle it correctly and he'll get what's coming to him without this need for sensationalizing it by breaking it with leaks.
  21. Out of curiosity, even though errors aren't the best judge of a defense, they are telling to a point... what is the record for number of errors committed in a playoff series? I have to think 9 is pretty high up the list.
  22. For the record, I have been a baseball first fan since about 2002, when the brewers still sucked. I was also a baseball first fan as a small child listening to uecker in the summer, but I went through a very immature phase when I was packers first in the 90s, as a teenager. (Of course, the brewers were never on TV, though I still listened to uecker fairly regularly). Now I don't really give two hoots about the packers. If they win, cool, but if they lose, I just giggle at all the depressed people on Monday morning. That hasn't happened lately though.
  23. I don't understand Counsell over weeks. It's not like Weeks is 0 for the series with 13 strikeouts or something. He even got a HR game 2, that at the time I believe got us back in the game before the bullpen continued in the same vein as Marcum. If you're going to talk about how he's hitting lately, he actually has an .846 OPS for this series.
