  1. I'll help out. Here you go: - Brewers love Machado and have made a very good offer. The names tossed around include Phillips, Ortiz, Burnes, Lutz, Woodruff, Arcia, Bando, T. Williams, Houser, Peralta, Ray, Erceg, Dubon, Gatewood, Brown, Nottingham, Stokes, Carmona, Medeiros, Ponce and a few others. That's just a preliminary list - I'm guessing some other guys have been talked about. 50% chance we get something done. - Brewers won't include top prospects such as Hiura - but you never know if that will change. - Brewers don't want to increase their offer any more except for if they have to. It's coin flip that we increase the offer. - Phillies have made a good proposal. Brewers might have to increase their offer to beat, but maybe not. It's toss up that we don't have to increase the offer. - Yankees made an offer but not good enough - 50% chance that could change. - Dodgers had a proposal but it was rejected. 50/50 they may come back and try again. - Between 2 and 29 other teams have inquired on Machado. - O's will wait until after the all-star break to announce trade. But that may change if they feel they can get more by waiting. Odds are about even that things get wrapped up this week. - Orioles have been scouting Brewer players. 50% chance the Orioles scout Brewer players and eat peanuts at the same time. - Mark A wants to go 'all in' but Stearns does not. If a deal is done, that means Mark A won the battle. If not, then Stearns did. Even money that Stearns wins this one, but you never know. - Come back later tonight and I will scramble all these things up, re-word slightly, and add some random percentage points. Of course, I'm leaving and never coming back if anyone questions me. Never means about 50%. Any thinking man can see that you have inside sources, and I'd like to subscribe to your newsletter.
  2. And I guess that I would argue that that mentality is why so many teams run out of gas at the end of the year. If you’re unable to see the forest for the trees, it could hurt you in the bigger picture. Baseball is a marathon, not a sprint. Sometimes you’re put in the crappy position of having to choose to pass on a race to finish the marathon.
  3. I think you’re missing at least part of the point here: it’s likely that if Miley/Hauser was the ‘hell or high water’ plan tonight, one AB in the early innings was unlikely to matter as soon as Miley wasn’t sharp tonight, and less important in the grand scheme of things than getting one more out of Miley. It’s about not needing another pitcher earlier. Obviously (as Hauser continues to struggle tonight), that’s exactly how it played out. Did it matter if Miley got shelled in the 5th rather than Hauser in the 6th?
  4. Yes, that was a bit of hyperbole but I'm guessing you understand the point. I guess we just agree to disagree but I think the evidence is pretty obvious that the current state of the starting pitching isn't a sustainable situation without exposing some less than optimal choices out of the bullpen in critical situations. Yes. This is my view exactly. I think they’re caught in the tough spot of needing to be sure the main guys are available and effective at the end of the year and throughout a series at the expense of having to let a couple of close games like last night go.
  5. And if Hauser needed to be pulled after looking poor in the 5th inning, instead of now? Who pitches then? It just pushes more guys into the fire. Or, you leave him in to get shelled, which means the one AB that people are up in arms about and started this discussion is meaningless anyway....
  6. Again, asking the 12th-20th guys on your staff to eat meaningful innings is going to get rough at some point. We've certainly seen that this week.
  7. Sure it does. Maybe Hauser successfully eats an inning or two. Maybe he doesn't. At some point, shuffling in your last men in the bullpen catches up with you... and you end up losing close games like last night. Do you think Counsell wants Lopez in the game in a situation last night's? Of course not.... but he had no choice. The focus is, and should be, on both the rest of the series and the rest of the season. These guys are eating a TON of innings. I'm sure getting as much as they can out of Miley or whomever was the goal tonight.
  8. I agree with all of this... The bullpen is starting to crack because they’re exhausted. I’m sure the value in the dugout is placed on SP innings at the expense of one AB.
  9. These seem the most logical. I'm sure they'll be watching Peralta and Burnes if he throws as well.
  10. Not sure if neither is an option, but that's where I'd be on both of those. I'm not opposed to Escobar, so I'd probably lean towards that deal but I still think it's too much.
  11. A .703 OPS is still good for a SS, clancy, and with his defense he'd be borderline all-star caliber with that line.
  12. I put as much faith in that offer being real as I do the odds of Jim Bowden getting another GM job. Seems like the type of deal he would make, and why he's been out of a non-media job for 10 years....
  13. That was my first thought as well...
  14. I’m curious how projections like this account for the value/ production increase that someone like Yelich for example could gain from Machado being added to the lineup behind him?
  15. If they're insistant on Burnes, ask them if they'll take Braun and his contract, because Orioles.
  16. Do we really know that, though? His price will likely be lower now that it hypothetically was before the season. Either the price will be affordable in a team's eyes, or TB won't find a buyer. I don't see this as the time Stearns suddenly decides to throw caution to the wind.
  17. I don't know if that specific question was answered, though. He was asked what position he would like to play if traded, not whether he's open to shifting over to 3B in late-inning situations or spot starting there 1-2 times a week.
  18. Nice of the Marlins to get an exciting game for their fan in attendance.
  19. Yikes... how has Rivera stuck in the bigs with those numbers?
  20. I don’t mind the move, though now Thames’ bat would be nice. Solidified the defense, and made it slightly easier to get two from Hader. Just didn’t work out.
  21. I love how BA just missed the call, then blames the ump for not being more animated.
  22. Man, Britton was fantastic prior to getting hurt. I wouldn’t give up anything to get him now, though. He’d be a great bullpen flier in the offseason.
  23. Because it's not really similar in terms of offense- Amazingly, Miller is nearly as bad as Machado (-1.5-2 defensive WAR) at SS, but is only worth 2.5-3.5 with his bat. That means Miller is only +0.5-+2 net, Machado could be +4 assuming no defensive improvement....
  24. His OPS was bretty brutal prior to the Braves' series, though it's great that he's had two nice games to improve his numbers and hopefully build on. From my perspective, the insistance by the organization (not his fault, I know) to use him as the 4th OF when there are better offensive AND defensive players like Broxton available is pretty frustrating. He hits enough to be a utility IF, not to play a corner OF spot with some regularity.
  25. The point is, you're claiming that the Brewers have been listed in these deals before during the 'past couple of deadlines,' but there seems to be more smoke here than typical. I'm not sure it's completely fair to dismiss it as just another rumor, when the Brewers are being listed as 'one of the favorites' at this point. Doesn't mean we get him (like with Quintana), but it's not some dude claiming that we're in on Cobb....
