  1. Based on what I know about reilly, info like this isn't out of left field.
  2. Hoping they can win vs. Northwestern and make a mini-run in the Big Ten tourney. Making the NIT is probably a hard stretch unless they beat MSU, but you hope the team is starting to go on a roll a bit and can build some momentum for next year. Pritzl's play last night and Iverson's play on the boards is starting to be a LITTLE encouraging.
  3. The Arrieta narrative isn't valid because JO is far cheaper and younger. That basically makes my point, though. He's not commanding a 5 year commitment or $100-whatever million, and they dumped him for next to nothing. Doesn't that flash a pretty big indicator that they might think he's toast?
  4. I question whether the discussion here has the same issue that has been brought up in the Lucroy thread right now... if Odorizzi had come up somewhere other than our system, would people be as torn about whether this trade is one that Milwaukee should have made? Yes, he'd be an acceptable option to be the 5. But beyond that, he was the definition of replacement level last year. A guy like that can by definition be aquired for little or nothing. I question whether we have a 'nostalgia' problem with Odorizzi. And why isn't the Arietta narrative also valid here? Rather than betting on a bounce-back, Tampa's internal evaluators decided that he wasn't worth the trouble, and they likely have closer intel than other organizations. Yes, money was likely a factor as well, but it's noteworthy nonetheless.
  5. I think the DFA of Dickerson and trade of Odorizzi makes it less likely they'll deal Archer, not more. He potentially can still increase his trade value and they lopped off some salary in the other two moves. I disagree, only because I think it's more likely that they're punting on the season and interested in a rebuild, rather than just trimming cost. As you said, the latter isn't important anymore, but I wonder if they'd value prospects more right now than Archer. It also probably means that Santana wouldn't be the best fit for them...
  6. Getting near the point where you have to wonder if Walker would accept a short deal just to get into camp. I'm moderately surprised that he hasn't signed this week.
  7. Then why make your argument by singling out the first part of a sentence in my post, when the complete sentence read "I appreciate the value of the money, but you'd have to get another piece of value for this to make any sense"?
  8. Again, only if you assume that they pocket that $16 million, which you are for some reason. I think it’s far more likely that they do indeed use it elsewhere on players.
  9. What value? To pad the owners profits? I am not an Attanasio hater, but at some point the ownership has to spend some of the vast profit they have been raking in to add the necessary players to be championship competitive. The $16M savings means nothing to me when they are likely sitting on over $100M excess cash ($50M from MLB rights, $50M from profit last few years). The Seligs wasted money and didn't make great decisions, the Attanasio ownership makes mostly good decisions (jeff suppan waives hi) and doesn't waste money, but we've got 1 world series appearance under the Seligs and how many under Attanasio? Hmmm? I'm really perplexed by this.... You think that by making a move that frees up $16 million in 2020 means that Mark A. is going to pocket that money in two years? You don't see the value in having those funds available to make additional moves at that time? Say their payroll budget is $120 million- it's almost certainly better to have an additional $16 million + whatever else would be available to improve the team, right? You seem to be advocating for keeping a declining Braun based on your belief that Attanasio needs to "spend his profits." Perhaps, though, they're better off having that $16 million to spend on a player (or players) that may be quite bad by that point instead?
  10. Honestly, I could see something like that working for them. Arrieta has a chance to hit another big contract if he performs well (which works for the Brewers too), and the Brewers aren't saddled by that 5th year if he's not. I'm not sure Arrieta signs if it's total guaranteed is 89 mil, though. Better put, I'd do that deal, and I think the Brewers would, but I'm not convinced Arrieta does.
  11. The problem with this is that Braun is hypothetically a useful player to the Brewers in 2018. Yes, it'd be great to get that money off the books a year early, but he's likely to be a contributor. Kemp will likely be cut, or will waste a roster space. I appreciate the value of the money, but you'd have to get another piece of value for this to make any sense.
  12. As indicated by my previous posts in this thread, I disagree completely.
  13. Thanks, I don’t think I had seen his projections when I initially posted that point. The thesis remains the same, though. Some people talk as though he’s not an upgrade to what we have now. This wouldn’t be a Gallardo or Guerra-like option. With Nelson out, Corbin would start the year projected to be our second best starter.
  14. Agreed. He's the second addition to solidify the staff, but you'd want more to make a legit run. Something like Anderson/Archer/Davies/Corbin/Chacin or Arietta/Anderson/Davies/Corbin/Chacin to start the year seems like a rotation that could contend with this offense.
  15. Corbin's FIP and ERA+ were both better than Davies' last year. I've said it before, and I'll emphasize it again: Corbin's 2017 ERA+ is better than the ZiPS projections for every single pitcher on the staff, including Anderson. I wouldn't even consider a trade of Santana for him straight up, but he'd be a solid 3 on our staff and would undeniably make us better.
  16. As far as I can tell, this was from random guy on twitter trolling/joking. You mean a UWM film student may not have inside sources???
  17. I've come around to this as well. I previously was on the train that keeping prospects and signing a FA arm made the most sense, but with the three FA arms left, it seems like hand-picking an affordable, young arm that we like to trade for is worth the prospects we'd have to trade relative to a potentially franchise-crippling, big-money deal + pick. I think Arrieta is the one arm I'm willing to sign if we can't find a trade that makes sense. If we're looking for TOR arms, he's the only one of the three left that has fit the bill and recently. Whether the Brewers think he'll fit that bill going forward or not is the key question, I guess.
  18. Chase had one (very) good year. We have to hope that it continues, but I'm not sure it should be counted on. He was a very average pitcher for his three seasons before that.
  19. bjk expressed my point more clearly, I think. We just don't know if the JR class is untalented, or if the staff was unable to develop them. The freshmen class seems to have abundent talent/potential. If they ALSO fail to develop and the results are poor next year, it's indicative of a big problem and Gard should/probably will be gone. Until then, though, we just don't know if the JR's are an untalented anomoly, or a pattern.
  20. Looking back at his stats, it's unbelievable how quickly he went from Cy Young-caliber to bad during his hypothetical prime. I'm always fine with nearly anyone on a minor league deal or split contract, but he'd need to show something good in a session to make me want a ML deal.
  21. What is this, a contest to see how many of these threads we can get locked?
  22. It isn't always meaningless. If a player comes in (or begins to get minutes) when they're already at or near the ceiling of their ability, there's not much development/improvement that can happen.
  23. Clearly, his thread is no longer productive. Feel free to move the discussion regarding possible transactions to a fresh thread.
  24. No mention of Joe Alexander?
  25. The problem with the JR's is the chicken vs. the egg. Are they untalented, or undeveloped? As I've said all along, we'll know a lot more a year from now.
