  1. My assessment as well. Yes, the cost 'stings.' But it stings on the non-pitching prospect side, which is where we can afford to have it sting. Yelich could be a superstar heading into his prime and playing 81 games at Miller Park. Don't undervalue what we've just received. And the first point is correct as well. I'd bet nearly anything that this is the first in a string of moves. If this trade ends up being basically Santana for Yelich and Brinson/Diaz/Harrison/Yamamoto for 2 legit young, controlled arms, we win those moves pretty handily, IMO.
  2. I think it's worth noting that the linked article that mentions Arcia seems to be a 'Brewerfan' like Marlins page (except with, you know, current main site content). That doesn't carry much weight in my mind, as the article is about the authors belief that the Marlins SHOULD target Arcia, not that they are/will.
  3. Your points are fair, but Yelich is likely acquired to allow Santana to be moved to acquire pitching. I would think losing Brinson in a deal like this should be looked at in the whole picture of moves that end up taking place, rather than just within this deal.
  4. pogo, you may be making an incorrect assumption in your post- the guy could be a 'take our crap and we'll give you a better deal'-type, and may not really be acquired to fill a need.
  5. Being discussed here: viewtopic.php?f=66&t=36301
  6. I don't think this is accurate. They had three 4-star recruits in their class last year (their best in a very long time), and have another 4-star coming in this year along with a 3-star big. The problem with the team isn't with the cupboard, it's with what's ahead of them. Bo's complete disaster of his last recruiting class has destroyed the team in the short term. Five players who are basically roster filler that were counted on to step in when the Dekkers, Hayeses, and Koenigs of the team graduated are basically taking up scholarships to be bad. How do you whiff on FIVE GUYS? That's left the team reliant on a bunch of 1st or 2nd year players (minus Happ, of course) to fill out four of the five positions at this point. Add in two significant back court injuries, and here we are. I think it's perfectly reasonable to start wondering about Gard, but next year is a more fair evaluation, IMO. If we're in a similar situation next January, the seat should be hot, and rightfully so. But I'd say its reasonable if not more likely to think that there'll be substantial improvement next season.
  7. This is a great point that got lost a bit in all of the discussion about the play yesterday. Not only was it a poor, unwise, and simply puzzling play on an individual level, he compounded it by taking out the only other player on defense that might have had even a slim chance to take down the receiver at the same time.
  8. It just seems to me that there should be rules you follow to make it easy on yourself. Kinda like going for two - if you're down five you go for two, if you're down six you kick the extra point, etc. Having some sort of 'cheat sheet' like they do for 2 pointers would require the coaches to acknowledge that this is a problem, though. It's not nearly to the level of the old boys' club in baseball, but so many of these guys seem to prefer managing the clock based off of gut and instinct rather than actual logic. Call it ego or whatever, I just don't know how many of those guys would even admit that they made mistakes yesterday. Not sure if Tomlin got asked about it after the game in his situation, but if he did, I'd imagine he defended his actions pretty fiercely. So many of these guys don't actually think they've done it wrong.
  9. Yeah, it's almost too bad that a couple of solid games (or one yesterday, really) shadows a lot of the flaws. Honestly, I'll admit that as I've aged I watch less non-Packer or at least non-NFC North related football. Watching this weekend reminded me that a lot of the coaches in the NFL aren't real good at their jobs. Heck, for the people calling for McCarthy's head this year and citing things that frustrate the heck ouf of them, I realized this weekend that many if not most of the coaches in the NFL make the same frustrating mistakes. Tomlin's lack of clock management. Payton's silly wastes of challenges, etc. And those are the coaches deep-ish into the playoffs! And the refereeing has been crappy all year. For all of the discussion about what a catch is, maybe the offseason conversation needs to shift to what exactly "indesputable video evidence" is, because I can't understand it.
  10. Mike Tomlin might have mis-managed the last drive of that game as bad as I've ever seen. At the very least, it's up there.
  11. I believe you may be correct on Philbin not being official, but I assume that's simply a Rooney Rule thing. I don't believe they've 'interviewed' any other candidates for OC yet, so they're likely waiting on compliance.
  12. But the Packers DID have a veteran backup in 2013. The problem was that Seneca Wallace got hurt and was lost for the year in the first quarter of his first start. Honestly, who had backup QB on their wish list heading into week 1? Yes, Hundley was proven ineffective and inadaquate. But people if people are claiming now that QB was a position of need, its with the benefit of hindsight.
  13. I will absolutely agree that McCarthy is likely to be happy with the hire, as he likely would have been with Wolf as well. Expectations seem to be that both would have been more like Ron Wolf than Ball, who would likely have been closer to Thompson's approach. That said, though, no one knows a GM's approach until they actually take over in the job and start making moves/drafting, etc.
  14. I'm sure this was joking... right? Especially after Silverstein debunked this rumor yesterday. Not a great weekend for Bob McGinn, really. Where there’s smoke... I believe McCarthy got his guy. Half the people here seem to think McCarthy is (or was) about to be fired, now he has enough pull to pick who the GM is for 3 years beyond his current contract? And Ted Thompson is now some manipulative genious, who has enough cloute to stay on the Packers' staff, but not enough to out vote a coach supposedly on the hot-seat? That seems a bit of a stretch to me. I know people generally pick sides in this stuff and believe what they want, but maybe McGinn's uncorroborated report was simply wrong?
  15. I'm sure this was joking... right? Especially after Silverstein debunked this rumor yesterday. Not a great weekend for Bob McGinn, really.
  16. No issues with the hire on my end. I'm sure the goal will be to try and keep both Ball and Wolf on as the cap guy and Director of Pro Personnel, respectively. Ball seems the more likely to stay, but maybe Wolf will stick for another year.
  17. Packers reached out to Seattle to interview John Schneider and were blocked by the club. They could still try to work out a trade. Former Bills GM Doug Whaley is expected to interview as well. Per Rob Demovsky, McCarthy is fine working with any of the three internal candidates, despite McGinn's report: http://www.espn.com/blog/green-bay-packers/post/_/id/43284/packers-denied-permission-to-interview-john-schneider-could-still-pursue-trade
  18. The Packers have hired former Colts WR coach Jim Hostler to the same position. Presumably, this means Edgar Bennett will be moving on. https://247sports.com/nfl/green-bay-packers/Bolt/Green-Bay-Packers-reportedly-to-hire-Indianapolis-Cots-Jim-Hostler-as-wide-receivers-coach--113289674
  19. Seems like a lot of assumptions are being made and conclusions are being jumped to based off of one unconfirmed report. Yes, McGinn is a legend, but does he not also have an agenda to drive subscribers to his new paid site? Why are NONE of the other beat writers privy to the information that he is, despite the actual current beat writers being presumably closer to 1265 Lombardi? And why would the Packers have reached out in the past day or two to both the Vikings about Paton and Reggie McKenzie to request interviews next week if they were already planning to announce Ball as the hire on Monday? Not saying McGinn is wrong. But let's let this play out before people lose their minds.
  20. Isn't that to some degree how Sean Payton and Mike Tomlin have kept their jobs? Heck, their Super Bowl wins were longer ago than McCarthy's. But neither Tomlin or Payton have lost several playoff games at home. Citing home playoff losses, but not the fact that Payton missed the playoffs four times since his Super Bowl win and finished below .500 4 times, with both happening three consecutive seasons before this one? And Tomlin has missed the playoffs three times since his win. McCarthy finished below .500 and missed the playoffs for the first time THIS YEAR in the seven seasons since his Super Bowl win. Wow, really? I find it hard to believe anyone in the league wouldn't want Bill if he were to actually come available. Is this happening on twitter?

  22. The argument, valid or not, is that they just beat the team that beat both of the teams playing in the Championship Game. Not completely crazy, IMO.
  23. Perhaps retreads because they've been here before, but both had immense success as offensive assistants, along with the rest of the "old gang". McCarthy's offense isn't changing. It seems incredibly wise to bring in/back assistants that have a track record of success within the system, rather than some random guy that might simply be ignored.
  24. Didn’t Capers have some very good success early on in his first years on the job? I just think most of these guys are so interchangeable. Dom will probably go somewhere and have success again. Yes, Capers' first two seasons were quite good. But Fangio hasn't had a defense ranked in the bottom half of the league in his last SEVEN seasons, and that includes 3 years running a Bears defense with a general lack of talent. In his four years with San Francisco, he never had a defense outside the top 5.
  25. Though this is correct, the difference is that Fangio has had immense success at both San Fran and Chicago. Their defensive rankings improved SUBSTANTIALLY in both places his first year on the job.
