  1. I don't mean to sound like I'm leading the Corbin bandwagon, I'm not, but his ERA+ number of 119 last year is better than the ZiPS projected ERA+ numbers of every single pitcher on our staff right now. I don't have his 2018 projection to know where that ranks, however. There are plenty of reasons not to like him (salary, 1-year 'rental,' etc.), but he'd be a solid contributor as the 'second' pitching acquisition alongside a Santana deal or FA signing, IMO.
  2. Corbin is a 3 WAR pitcher. Gallardo is the definition of replacement level. In fact, he was slightly worse than replacement level last year. To compare the two is not accurate.
  3. I'm on the 'don't worry about Nelson coming back until he actually does' train as well. Too much uncertainty can happen before June. Heck, one of the others could be down hurt or prove ineffective before then. I'd rather go into the season with one starter too many than not enough.
  4. Small bump. Still looking for a Michalske if anyone happens to have a lead on one!
  5. I think the important thing to remember about this team if Santana is traded is that based on rest and Braun's durability history, a guy like Phillips as the 4th OF is likely to get a solid amount of starts. Factoring the typical nagging-type injuries that any team can expect, he could feasibly get a solid amount of PT this year.
  6. I love this point, and wanted to highlight it one more time for emphasis. This deal is atypical for a number of reasons: it's not an 'acquire a pricey, older veteran for prospects to contend' or 'dump a veteran-soon-to-be-FA for prospects' deal that make up 95% of MLB trades. It was a 'trade a young all-star with a long-term, team-friendly contract for prospects' deal that makes sense based on what both teams are trying to do. If another opportunity to make a similar trade happens next year, I'd be all over that too.
  7. Moving Santana is as much or mostly about his defense, clancy. He was so poor in the OF last year that he detracted much of his offensive value.
  8. I'm on this line of thinking too. My gut says this was all done yesterday, but they want the dust to settle on their two huge acquisitions before the corresponding trade of Santana. I'm expecting a deal today.
  9. Perfect example of how WAR doesn’t always get it right. Take a look at his stat line as a Brewer and try to explain how he wasn’t the better offensive player. And for career? Walker again better. Harrison is soooo overrated. I can look at his stat line and say that it was 149 plate appearances. His .409 OBP was well above his second highest OBP in his career .362. And he's two years older than Harrison and not great defensively. I think it's perfectly reasonable to think that Harrison will outperform Walker significantly in 2018 when defense is factored in. Don't get me wrong- I like Walker and loved having him here. But though the regime's moves today showed they value OBP and contact, they also showed that they value defense as well, and Walker's liability there can't be ignored.
  10. Defensively, probably. How do you figure offensively? oWAR Walker: 2.1 oWAR Harrison: 2.5 Harrison was a 3.3 WAR player last year, factoring in his superior defense. Walker was 1.5 (Yes, his defense is below replacement level).
  11. I hope not. The trend has been obtaining high OBP guys and he’s not one of those types. I’d rather us snag Walker and not give up prospects. Yeah especially with middle infielders not getting big money it makes too much sense to not bring back Walker at this point. This morning I would have rather let it ride with Villar, but given our latest acquisitions I'd prefer the solid proven safe option. Despite how good Walker was for us last year, Harrison was better, both offensively and defensively.
  12. Wow. No clue about the second trade. Phillips or Broxton, likely. Assuming of course they're not involved directly in the Santana deal.
  13. Yeah, I'd be curious if the moves have tipped the opinion of the team and its outlook.
  14. If this is accurate (being willing to go to $125m, not your projections of course), that opens up the possibility of two significant acquisitions yet, IMO.
  15. I would do anything to get 6 WAR Marcus Stroman.
  16. Archer or Salazar is going to happen. Smoke seems to be around Archer, so that's my guess. I still maintain that Cleveland makes too much sense, though.
  17. This one, like 5 posts up
  18. Why is Salazar such a big thing around here? . FIP below 3.75 every year of his career so far, entering the prime of his career, and a 3 WAR player twice in his career so far. But ideally, I'd love to get Kipnis in the same deal as well.
  19. Yeah, there simply HAS to be one or even two more deals.
  20. Cleveland makes soooo much sense, whether for Salazar, Meija, or Kipnis (or some combination). I can't imagine that Domingo is on the team past tonight or tomorrow, honestly.
  21. So much will depend on the whole pitching staff next year, regardless of the upgrade to position players and right now at least, the pitching staff is a large question mark. Absolutely. If Santana brings an Archer or Salazar, things get really, really interesting.
  22. I think the take away here is that the Brewers added ~8-10 WAR to the line up today, at the expense of ~3-4 (Santana/Broxton). Even if you think they outperformed a bit last year and are a 83ish win team before the moves, this puts them solidly into contention, prior to whatever comes from dealing Santana.
  23. Honestly, Santana for Salazar or Meija makes so much sense. I'd assume if Salazar is acquired, the FA would be Cain. If someone like Kipnis or Meija is traded for, then Lynn or Arietta.
  24. I'm expecting a Santana trade for sure, and Cleveland makes the most sense. I'd expect a significant FA signing soon as well. Assuming Santana goes, Cain might be it, otherwise a significant arm.
  25. Who did the Brewers add to up their offer? I'm very interested in the answer to this question as well, HH.
