  1. The Pittsburgh Pirates bailed the 2008 Brewers out. Not Dale Sveum. Sveum has some good characteristics, but I don't want anyone whose thought process leads to starting Jeff Suppan over Yovani Gallardo in an elimination game managing the Brewers ever again.
  2. Take my opinion with a grain of salt as my pitching experience was limited to my first couple years in high school. It wouldn't be too hard for someone with a 4-seam fastball to learn a 2-seam fastball, especially a major league baseball player. Actually, I'd be very surprised if Parra didn't know how to throw it. The difference between a 2-seam and 4-seam fastball mechanics-wise is just the grip. In my experience the 2-seamer has more movement than a 4-seamer, so I definitely see why it should be considered by someone with a 4-seamer with little movement.
  3. How do you see Gerut as a much better player? Defensively, Dickerson seems clearly better. Offensively, while both have struggled recently, Dickerson has better career numbers and gets on base at a solid rate. Dickerson has better speed. Dickerson is also roughly 5 years younger than Gerut. Dickerson strikes out at a higher rate, but that doesn't really matter and certainly shouldn't give Gerut the edge in the comparison.
  4. I don't really get the "more of a contact hitter than a power hitter" quote either. He strikes out a lot, but has shown some power in the past. I'm not sure how you equate Dickerson to a AAAA player. Dickerson's career .367 OBP and solid defense makes him look like a good bench option to me. And if he steals at bats from anyone, it'll probably be Cain.
  5. They've got Spotted Cow on tap at many of the country bars in my area, so I'm not sure the Yuppie stereotype is a good one. Some people enjoy a creamy wheat beer that doesn't taste like Fruity Pebbles (I'm looking at you Sunset Wheat).
  6. For some reason I get that feeling that if Melvin was fired and his replacement made this exact same move, you'd be singing his praises.
  7. I didn't expect to hear this when I logged in this morning. Awesome. It's kinda cool to see that Corey was actually sincere in his wishes to stay in Milwaukee. ESPN is reporting that its 3/$26.5. If so, that seems like a great deal for the Brewers.
  8. Yeah, Lance Berkman is another guy involved in some of these rumors that would make sense. But if Prince isn't in the lineup tonight this place would explode.
  9. I would bet on it being Dunn, but... This tweet got me thinking: Supposedly the White Sox wanted Jackson so they could flip him for Dunn. If this trade would put an end to a Jackson trade, maybe it is a deal for Prince. Its fun speculating on speculation.
  10. Significant Off Season Moves: Casey McGehee, Amaury Rivas, and Taylor Green to Florida for Ricky Nolasco (Will probably take more to net Nolasco, but he's a guy that could be had) Sign Javier Vazquez 2 years $20m. 1B Fielder 2B Weeks SS Escobar 3B Gamel LF Braun CF Cain RF Hart C Lucroy SP1 Gallardo SP2 Nolasco SP3 Vazquez SP4 Wolf SP5 Parra CL Axford RP Braddock RP Hawkins RP Loe RP Villanueva RP Narveson RP Valuable Bullpen Arm Melvin Gets For Nothing (Think Coffey, DiFelice, Torres, etc) Bench Katin Gomez Kottaras Counsell Valuable Bench Player Melvin Gets For Nothing (Think Edmonds, Kapler, Branyan, etc)
  11. What would Ben's career have been like if he could have stayed healthy? A Cy Young or two? I think so.
  12. Great point. Haren was going to make the same money no matter where he played. He was almost certainly looking to go to a contending team or somewhere close to home. Milwaukee is neither of those.
  13. Funny, I would say the same thing about Carlos Gomez.I was starting to think that Macha wasn't a complete dolt with his handling of the HBP situation over the weekend, but then he pulls out a quote like this. Carlos Gomez played only 36 games at AAA (just 20 more than Cain) and hasn't had an ops over .800 any year. Maybe he's the one that needs to prove himself, Ken.
  14. Baseball America had Beckham ranked as the White Sox top prospect before the 2009 season. He didn't disappoint and put up a .808 ops last season. He's very deserving of the hype he's gotten around here. It would be silly for Doug to be focused completely on pitching and pass up on a talent like Beckham.
  15. I'm glad to see Beckham involved in some of these rumors. He'd make a much better centerpiece than Hudson, IMO. Getting the best value for Fielder should be Melvin's priority even if it means getting a young bat instead of a pitching prospect.
  16. As much fun as it is to talk about potential trades, I wouldn't want to be Doug Melvin right now. Our record suggests that we should be sellers (or buyers for the future if you prefer), but the team is not that far off from being a contender next year. We've got a solid offense and some good young arms in the bullpen. We could use another guy with top of the rotation stuff, but the only way we could net one is by trading some of that offense. Guys like Gamel and Cain can fill some holes, but its more likely that they go through some growing pains like Escobar than mash like Braun in his rookie year. Between now and the start of next season, Melvin has basically 3 options: 1- Sell off some minor parts with little in return. Hold on to Hart and Fielder hoping that Parra continues to improve and Wolf pitches better. (Probably the most likely scenario and the one that will take the most heat around here). 2. Sell of some of our minor parts and one of our bats. Get a pitcher that can help next year. (If we can get a bidding war for Hart or Fielder, this might be possible. Otherwise, we'll end up with a Jonathan Sanchez type, not much of an improvement over what we have). 3. Sell everything and aim for 2012/2013. (Huge risk for Melvin. Will likely cost him his job if the prospects we get for Hart and Fielder flame out, but with a little luck we could have an impressive wave of pitchers coming up).
  17. Hart alone isn't going to net Bumgarner. We'd have to send a good prospect or two as well. Hart, Rivas +, maybe.
  18. If we were within a few games of first, I'd explore some other options at SS. Seeing we are nowhere near being in contention, Milwaukee is just as good a place as any to work on his defense.
  19. A dish of antifreeze will probably do the trick.
  20. Gallardo and Wolf have both been better than league average in terms of innings/start, so it's not a matter of them amassing high pitch counts in short starts.
  21. Ken, do you know what starting pitchers need? A consistent schedule and low pitch counts. You've given them neither. Gallardo and Wolf are 3rd and 6th in the league in pitches thrown, and the rotation has been an ever-changing disaster since the start of the season. Identify your five best starters and stick with them but do so without destroying their arms.
  22. Does this pick indicate that Melvin knows his job is fairly secure? A college arm who could move up quickly seems like a safer pick for a GM with concerns about his job security. If they take their time with him like they have with Odorizzi, it'll be 2014 before he's anywhere close to Milwaukee.
  23. It seems the Narv-dog has learned from his rocky 1st. 0-2 Breaking Ball >> 0-2 Fastball
  24. Just for comparison's sake: the 2005 Brewers were 6th in the NL in runs allowed, and the 2008 Brewers were 4th in the NL in runs allowed. It's incredibly obvious that the key to winning in the post season isn't pitching, pitching, pitching. Its some combination of pitching, hitting, and luck.
  25. Just wrong. It took no more than 5 minutes to find some teams that recently had success without the best pitching. Here the league rankings in runs against for some recent World Series winners. 2009 Yankess - 14th 2006 Cardinals - 10th 2004 Red Sox - 14th 2003 Marlins - 8th It's also funny that you brought up the Phillies pitching. In 2008 their team ERA was 3.88, the Brewers was 3.85.
