  1. Would you have felt better if they started cold and ended hot? Every team in baseball goes through hot streaks and cold streaks. The only bad contracts in that bunch are Gagne and Riske (a contract that many liked initially). No. The bottom line is that while overpaid, Suppan is fine for a back of the rotation starter. Fangraphs put Cameron's value at $18 million last. Center fielders with those offensive numbers and solid defense are worth that much. Cameron's contract is a feather in Melvin's cap. Compare Melvin's work to that of other managers, and you'll see that he's one of the better ones. Maybe seeing that even a highly regard GM like Theo Epstein traded away Hanley Ramirez will make you feel better about Melvin.
  2. Not sure what years you're counting. If you're counting 06, they never had a lead to blow and counting this year as a lead they never got back is some extreme pessimism. Attanasio had a big hand in Suppan's contract. Yes, Suppan is overpaid, but he's certainly been a solid back of the rotation starter. Without him we have another hole to fill. Is that extra 12 million a year gonna adequately fill two holes in the rotation? I doubt it. Why on earth would you throw Cameron into the mix here? If anything he's been underpaid. Just take a look at some of the other managers in baseball and the future will look a little brighter with DM.
  3. People need a scapegoat. With Yost gone and Macha's little time here, Melvin is the easy choice. The criticisms of him are almost always around these lines: acquire some pitcher we had no realistic chance at, trade some struggling player that no one could predict regressing, and spend money that we didn't have for a veteran bench.
  4. Fangraphs had him at 3.6 million last year, almost exactly what he got this offseason and puts him 9.5 million this year.
  5. If we cant work out a trade, I call up Cody or give the spot to McClung. I'm really interested in seeing what Cody can do up here. And if McClung is given the spot, Macha should actually give him a chance to stretch out. I agree with the sentiment that it was a mistake to go with Burns over McClung. McClung has better stuff and pitched well as a starter last year. He should have been given more of a chance.
  6. Looking at the upcoming free agent class, I have a hard time believing there won't be teams interested in Lopez this off season. And even if there's no interested in Lopez, being saddled with a versatile infielder with decent numbers isn't the worst thing in the world.
  7. Is it really necessary to declare a 3 run game over in the 4th?
  8. Saying this repeatedly doesn't make it true. It's already been mentioned in the press that he's been exploring some options (DeRosa, Vazquez, etc.). I have no doubt theres more going on behind the scenes as well.
  9. I completely agree with Melvin's comments but wish he wouldn't have made them to the media. No good can come out of this bickering with a tense clubhouse and the appearance that the crew is desperate for pitching being possible consequences.
  10. Inappropriate. He's pointing out the obvious by saying that we need to improve out pitching but does so by basically throwing Burns and McClung under the bus. Yes, our starting pitching hasn't been great, but our hitting has been inconsistent. We've scored 2 or fewer runs in 4 of our past 10 games. Braun's previous comments have been focused at the team as a whole. This one seems to be targeting a select few players which can do nothing but harm, IMO. Shut up Braun, and let Doug do his job. And at this point with so many buyers, doing nothing is probably for the best.
  11. As much as I hate the Yankees, I feel bad for CC since his workload with the Crew was probably a factor in this injury. I find it hard to imagine being pleased to see Sabathia hurt after the way he pitched for us last year.
  12. They where going for the playoffs all year. Yost had many faults but luckily, undervalueing wins early in the season wasn't one of them. If confidence is so important to Manny's success how was he able to overcome his rough start to the season last year? I'm sure his confidence was low with an era approaching 6 early in May. Shouldn't that have snowballed on him, taking him back to rookie ball by the end of the season? Don't try to put Yost in anywhere near the same category as Dusty. Parra was 25 and threw about 30 more innings in 07' than 08' (166 innings). Wood was increasing his innings by around 40 IP a year and throwing over 200 innings a year at the same age. Prior made around a 50 inning jump to over 200 innings at age 22. Yes, Manny was a couple years removed from an injury, but it's nowhere near the level of abuse Wood and Prior took. Give me a break. Kershaw is 21 and Manny was 25.
  13. Way to end it Seth! Anyone know how long that inning lasted?
  14. But over those 5.2 scoreless innings he had 5 walks. It was more luck than actually figuring anything out in regards to his control.
  15. Really, the bullpen situation wasn't as dire as Macha is making it out to be. You could reasonably expect Coffey (who hadn't pitched since Friday) to go two innings, so you just needed one inning out of Villy or McClung, then Hoffman. Go for the win in a very winnable game. If we need to hold another lead on Tuesday, you're in the same situation but with a win in game one, and if we're behind, you let Julio pitch with no lead to blow. Putting Julio in was an example of the wishful thinking that Yost was so often accused of. Expecting a bad pitcher like Julio to pitch a clean inning was wishful thinking. Obviously, an implosion of that degree was unexpected, but Macha should have realized that there was a good chance Julio would need to be bailed out. And if Julio needs to be bailed out, there's no reason to be using him in the first place. Some of the blame has to go toward Melvin as well when we have some guys throwing pretty well in AAA right now.
  16. You just cant do that...teams do not give out contracts based on whether said player player plays in the playoffs. No team can know if they player they are signing will be available in the postseason, so they pay them for expected production. Last year Sheets production was worth 21 mil. If he'd pitched the entire season, he would have been worth even more. To play along, lets say that the difference between Sheets and Suppan in the post season (one start) was worth something absurd like 5 mil. And lets say the Brewers charge Sheets for that, so we'd subtract it from the 21 mil. Even then he's still underpaid.
  17. According to this study, she's right in some cases. It shows that a closer has more impact pitching down 1 in the 8th at home than up 3 in the 9th.
  18. Quite honestly, I think Manny growing a goatee would do more to put an end to this mentally weak talk than his pitching could.
  19. So now it's ok to take Kendall out? (pounds head against wall)
  20. Oh, how I miss him... Branyan rewriting 'book'
  21. Be sure to give the Job Center of Wisconsin a look too.
  22. No they won't. They'll cool off again eventually. The pitching will have another bad stretch, the bats will cool off a bit, and Hoffman will give up some runs. Its inevitable. Now I don't think they'll go on a seven game losing streak, but hopefully by now we've learned that the hot streaks as well as the cold streaks don't last.
  23. And we're all posting on an internet message board when we could be helping the community.
