  1. Joey Votto has bested Pujols in OPS up to this point, and he can't even crack the top 5. Crazy.
  2. Call me crazy, but if this game goes a few more innings, I'd pitch Parra and bring up Capuano to start tomorrow.
  3. If you're arguing that Melvin should have traded for more top of the rotation talent, I'm not sure why you would use Wandy Rodriguez as an example. His career numbers look very Chris Capuano-like to me. A good pitcher, but not an ace. My post was a reply to the claim that Melvin failed to get any meaningful pitching in return in his trades. Trades made in recent years. Examples, please. I'll give you the Morrow deal from this past off season, but he was dealt for pitching. Young, top of the rotation talent is not dealt as often as you constantly try to make it sound. There were a significant number of posters (myself included) who felt that McGehee's value would never be higher than it was this off season and that he should have been dealt. Tampa Bay had the luxury of having high draft picks for a number of years. Instead to trying to compare the current state of the Brewers organization to TB or Texas, take a look at how the organization has progressed under Melvin's watch. Compare the recent Power 50 to one of the earlier ones. It's almost silly how much more talent is in the system now. This isn't meant to be a criticism of the current Power 50, but we've got a 19 year old doing very well in A ball and he's only at 22 on the list (yeah, he's been walking a lot of guys but still).
  4. It has been stated multiple times that Doug chose to focus on drafting hitting at first. We now have two of the best hitters in baseball. Recently he has changed his focus to drafting pitching. It takes time to develop prospects. The pitching is coming. Not at all true. See Chris Capuano, Jorge De La Rosa, Francisco Cordero, etc. Realistic opportunities? Teams just don't trade good young pitching that often.
  5. I've really been impressed with Kottaras as well. He's shown some pop and has taken a ton of walks. Weeks leads the team with 21 walks and Kottaras isn't that far behind with 17 despite sparse playing time. If not for Lucroy and Salome I'd bet he'd be generating a lot more buzz on this board considering he's still youngish at 27.
  6. Vargas pitched pretty well at the end of last season. I don't think they're ready to cut ties with him just yet. My prediction would be Riske to 60 day DL, Vargas to the DL, Cruz DFA, and Stern sent down.
  7. Alright Ken, Narveson is at around 100 pitches and is coming off an outing with 130 pitches. Please, please, please don't send him out for another inning.
  8. The bullpen really hasn't been worked too hard the past couple games. Axford, Villanueva, Vargas, and Stetter didn't pitch on Monday or Tuesday. Suppan has only pitched twice the past week and has been more effective in the pen. There was really no good reason for Wolf to start the 7th. Macha had other options...he was just too stupid to use them.
  9. At this point I'd rather see Suppan closing games. Hoffman goes from lights out to cooked in half a year. Unreal.
  10. Considering the joke of a franchise that Melvin inherited, it certainly was a success. If you're hoping for a perennial playoff team you aren't going to be happy with the next GM, or the next...
  11. Just kind of thinking out loud here (well, not really out loud), but would it be at all realistic for the Rays to pick up Fielder for a run this season and deal him in the off season?
  12. It may not be the end of the world but letting your starter throw 130 pitches is reckless and stupid. Doesn't matter how overworked the pen is.
  13. Yost is a solid hire for a team that will need to rely developing prospects to succeed. If a guy like Moustakas comes up and struggles, he's still gonna get a lot of at bats with Yost at the helm.
  14. Some people are definitely choosing to forget these situations where Yost would let a reliever pitch multiple innings and finish out a game. Whatever. At this point I'd say their bullpen management abilities are close to the same. Macha is viewed more favorably for two reasons: he has a better bullpen, and he hasn't made a really stupid move in a really big game yet (Shouse/Burrell). I think most people think of that move when remembering Yost although it was not at all representative of his bullpen management abilities as a whole. Did he actually do that? The argument could definitely be made that Villanueva is the best guy in our pen right now.
  15. I was very disappointed with the De La Rosa trade when it happened. I could see a contending team trade an erratic lefty with a high ceiling for a utility infielder, but the Brewers weren't really in the race at that time. You don't trade a high ceiling guy like JDLR just to get a little closer to .500. Get some AAAA player to man second base for nothing. However, if Melvin didn't make that trade, I doubt JDLR would be on our roster now. De La Rosa continued to struggle until some point in 2009 where the light seemed to go on for him. Should we have kept De La Rosa when we weren't in the race? Yes. Would/should De Le Rosa have been on the roster during 2008? No, we couldn't afford to keep a player on the 25 man who was still figuring things out at that time. So while I didn't like the trade at the time, not trading him to KC would have just delayed the inevitable.
  16. Over the past few years, the difference between the average Cubs fan and the average Brewers fan has become negligible.
  17. But can Escobar put down a bunt? Apparently that is all that is required of your #2 hitter in Ken Macha's lineup.
  18. Team's don't usually recognize players on other teams, but players don't usually have such a significant impact on a team over half a season like CC Sabathia did. CC had one of the best half seasons by a player ever, and it was just enough to get the Brewers to the playoffs. Yes, we couldn't have done it without Braun, Fielder, Sheets, etc., but CC was practically superhuman during his stint here. I will never forget that season and will forever be a CC Sabathia fan.
  19. Obviously the condescending remarks are uncalled for, but I think I might somewhat see what BREWERPRIDE is referring to. Hoping that Suppan gets shelled seems a bit silly. However unlikely it may be, I hope that Suppan comes back and pitches lights out.
  20. As one of the predictors of Casey McGehee's decline, I hope he continues to prove me wrong.
  21. I think an argument could be made for putting Mark Loretta at 2nd.
  22. Nah, the boo birds will be too confused by Todd Coffey pitching for both teams to boo.
  23. I don't see how anyone who witnessed Derrick Turnbow's struggles could make this demand. Turnbow was a head case, and the chorus of boos certainly aided in the whittling of his confidence. Booing only hurts the team/player being booed. There's really no debating that.
