  1. I need you to explain what you mean TLB. I never once said we should burn whatever minor league depth we have to acquire the likes of Halladay/Bedard (pre-DL). I've been anti that. Melvin has backed us into a pretty crappy situation with two players collectively (BEfore tonight) with a -.1 WAR. Instead of spending two league mins we are spending 20million... or a little under 25% of our payroll.
  2. Meh I get what he's saying. The better the team does, the lower the collective baseball IQ. Some of my best memories of Brewer games where when they were horrible. But I'd rather put up with people trying to figure out what the R on the scoreboard means then watch 100 loss baseball again.
  3. For my 2000th post all I'll say is.. look at what Melvin left us for 2009 and 2010. Guess I should get http://www.firedougmelvin.com up and running.
  4. This is good news, lets just hope Swindle can find the strike zone in the pros. Good luck in the minors Burns, at the very least you beat Santana.
  5. That was amazing. 87 years since last perfect game. He owes Wise a few cases of beer. (For the Sox)
  6. MLBN just keeps cutting in each time the Rays are at bat. He sure was lucky wih that shot up the line.
  7. Correct. And BUC, are we in the hunt because we have a well built team, or is it because the division is painfully bad where 4 teams are with in 2 games of first?

  9. There is a lot of good will for DM around the Brewer fan base because we made it into the playoffs. I'll remember our birth for a long long time, it's special to me, but when trying to evaluate players/managers/coaches we need to try to separate our good/bad will from discussion and try to keep it as objective as possible. DM has done some great moves, but I personally think his magic is done. I've grown tired of watching the waiver wire for anyone who remotely had a connection with Texas, soon as you see a Waiver you know they'll be a Brewer. That and now it appears to be a former aging Cardinal. I'm not sure how to create a metric for GMs, but to me, DM is stuck in the idea that we are a larger market then we are. The Suppan FA acquisition was grossly over paid for, yes the market was very high, but that doesn't mean we have to participate in it. The question is, who has the higher % of win share for the management? Was it Jack Z and his draft/scouting, or is it DM for trades/FA Acquisition? To me, it seems since most of our stars are home grown, it's hard for me to give the props to DM for it.
  10. WAR is fairly simple. It's calculating the average player (Replacement Level) and giving them league min. Then you see how players perform compared to the replacement level, the value of the player is calculated by each marginal win they gain and what each marginal win is worth in the open market. It's kind of like VORP, but with fancy money.
  11. I think this statement is a bit to broad and general. Would it be better to have the kids exposed to constant fighting? Would it be ok to expose your child to the only relationship they know... a dysfunctional relationship? I do think that some divorces are caused by one or both parties being selfish, but just because you have kids doesn't mean you have to still live in a bad situation. I think this is way to black and white.
  12. What the heck BTA, no mention of your favorite forum poster? I'm insulted.
  13. I think my brain just exploded.
  14. Boy Werth wasn't helped by their WS win at all was he?
  15. Must be a 12 year old, Sports with a Z.
  16. I for one am scared of a Billy Beane cast off.
  17. They can send him down again if they are not happy, I believe he's in an option year now. It could have been done to raise his value, or decrease GMs greed against the crew. If we pose that we have 5 solid starters and X wasn't needed as much, we may be able to give up less.
  18. BTA has a name you know http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  19. Landlord. So she randomly showed up Saturday, told the better half that we need to "vacuum the stairs" which is common space (Cept the top part leading to us). Ok fine, we'll get to it when we can. Monday we are left with a 2 page note with random knitt picking. "You didn't take care of the carpets they are brand new [maybe a few years ago]" "you need to not drill holes in woodwork" (which we haven't, she found hooks in her storage space from the previous tenants) and other misc craziness. Then also requested we give her rent a week early. Not gonna happen.
  20. I'm not saying that DM hasn't help us return to respectable like. But the question is, who has more influence? Was it Jack Z building the farm, or was it DM from controlling the process? Since we are on the outside, I'd rather look at DM at his ability to plug the need hole we have form our farm system. That is, look at DMs performance (vs. other GMs and vs. replacement) for all his actions that are not related to our draft control time of the player. Performance like FA contracts (Value vs. Performance), his contract extensions, isolate it that way so we can not attempt to remove Jack Z question from the equation. I think thats what muddles so much on the eval of DM, how much did Jack Z really do? Bad contracts do happen, I understand that, but when you cherry pick the good, I just wanted to show that you could cherry pick the bad. Once again, look at the whole instead of thin slices of the negative or positive.
  21. Yovani Gallardo v. Adam Wainwright tonight, Jeff Suppan v. Todd Wellemeyer tomorrow Braden Looper v. Joel Piniero on Thursday
  22. Bill Halls contract, Jeff Suppans contract, Eric Gagne, Kevin Mench, Greg Aquino, Julian Tavares, Johnny Estrada, Vargas... for every win I can give you a loss. Once again, if we want to evaluate a GM, then we need to some how come up with metrics to evaluate his total performance.
  23. Its hard to evaluate a GM objectively. Obviously there is a lot of good will to DM from some trades and the fact that we returned to respectability and hit that beloved playoffs last year. Everyone on the club wants to win (Except Suppan, I think he hates winning). So I guess we have to figure out our own way to objectively look at the club and our executives. Being on the outside really makes it hard, it sounds like Jack Z was given complete control of the drafting, but was this the case? If it is, this could help us evaluate DM based on some kind of metric system. We can eliminate all the farm grown kids and just look at Free Agents and trades, perhaps using some kind of existing metric (WAR and Salary estimator based on WAR) vs. actual cost to see if DM has actually performed better or worse then we think.`
  24. Well while I feel that Yo and old man withers Hoffman deserve a AS spot, I'm glad they aren't. Yogas arm has been used a lot after an injury year, and old man withers is old, I'd rather he sit at home sucking on his werther originals and watering his lawn instead of putting extra wear on arm. I'd rather have 2 fresher arms for the hard part of a post season run, then 3 hours of glory.
  25. Bad move by DM. He should be above it and not drag the media into it. He should have done it behind closed doors, I'd be mad too, but DM just made it worse. DM has forced MA to chose a side, I'd go with the Franchise. You can replace GM Talent (Cept Billy Beane he's awesome), it's hard to replace "Franchise" talent.
