  1. Never heard of a buyout in Garza's deal.
  2. Anthony is due raise & most likely a multi year deal. I think it is more likely he gets a 2 or 3 year deal at $4M per year.. I agree. That's why I said $6-$7M a year. I think he'll get multiple years, just for more than you're projecting. 2/12 would be great, to me.
  3. You can probably get Swarzek back for $6-$7M a year, so yes, still well worth it when Garza's $5M would almost cover that.
  4. Worth mentioning here but Swarzek said he wants to return to the Brewers in 2018.
  5. The 'If it doesn't say Bell on the side, you've just been taken for a ride' slogan at Brewer games has to be the worst slogan like, ever. Think about that just for a moment. You're in an ambulance. Clearly, something very bad, possibly imminently dangerous to your life or future well-being, has happened. Your last concern in the world, presumably, is the company name of the ambulance that will be escorting you to the hospital, assuming they all provide adequate in-route medical care. Bell would have you believe, apparently, that even in a life threatening situation, it STILL needs to say Bell on the side. I can picture it now, '9-1-1, what is your emergency?' 'Hi, I've just been in a car wreck and am bleeding profusely. Oh you can have an ambulance there in 5 minutes? Oh, thank goodness. What, it doesn't say Bell on the side? Forgot it, it better say Bell, I don't care how long it takes.'
  6. I can't understand at all the argument at all that if a player is underpaid at some point, it's fine if he's overpaid later because he earned more than his salary then in production. To me that's total nonsense and strange rationalizing. 2007-12 (especially since most of those were pre-arby years), has absolutely nothing to do with now. No one is arguing that Braun was overpaid 6 years ago. By that logic we might as well go ahead and give Lucroy a nice 3 year $75M contract in free agency, since we'll still come out well ahead given what he gave us over the years.
  7. Too bad, I was looking forward to the Dodgers Rockies game tonight, makes no difference now.
  8. Our bullpen has been pretty darn good this season. The bullpen was the least of our problems this year. IMO it was the lack of getting key hits with RISP and thus not being able to add on runs later in the games. It was good the second half of the season. It was atrocious the first half. Don't know what happened during the All Star Break where both the offense and the pitching did an absolute 180. It makes you wonder what would have happened if Josh Hader had been in this pen all year. I know Hader is a little bit of a different case because they wanted him to start, but still.
  9. I'm proud of the team for the season they had, but brutally disappointed in the way they went out, pissing away a 6 run lead against their most hated opponent. Sums up their season, they showed a stat early on today of the % of team losses were leads that were blown, and the Brewers were 60 some percent, I mean the #2 team wasn't even close.
  10. Jumped out to a big early lead, did nothing offensively after that and then blew it late. If this game is the end of our season, could not be a more Brewer'esque way to go out.
  11. At this point we probably should tender Hughes a contract in arbitration for next year, shouldn't we?
  12. Seems like a truthful take. Not really. Any player who makes a lot of money and isn't that productive gets similar treatment from fans. See Garza, Matt. That part doesn't have anything to do with PEDs. Braun is still a better player than Garza, to be sure, but yeah for me it's more about the fact that he's a 1 and a half win player that people still talk about like he's something special.
  13. Man I would love if we can go into the last day of the season with just a chance.
  14. Well they will go to bed tonight still alive. That's all you can ask for at this point in the season, live for one more day. Dodgers got the right guy on the mound tomorrow, hopefully they let him go at least 5-6.
  15. How about Votto then? He's older than Braun and far more productive. Justin Turner? Heck, Blackmon is not that young, he's 31. Also, that was sort of my whole point in all of this was when comparing him to the best nowadays, he doesn't stack up, and yet I think sometimes we hold onto this nostalgic view of him from when he WAS elite.
  16. Well, I would say the opposite has happened. I will be blunt in my opinion here, but I do have a right to this opinion: Braun is overrated. Really overrated. He's wrapping up a season hitting under .270, mediocre power with 17 HR, and a 1.5 fWAR, half a win less than Manny Pina. Yet we act like he is still one of the best in the game. C'mon now. He's ok. He has enough decent stretches where his contract shouldn't be a disaster. But you stack him up against the best hitters in the game, Altuve, Blackmon, Trout, etc. etc, no, he can't hold their respective jocks. Not anymore.
  17. There’s something about playing with pride. There’s also something about knocking out your divisional opponents. Sure those are factors to some degree but they're for a team like the Dodgers with WS aspirations they're going to put their long-term goals for this year first.
  18. I don't understand why people just assumed we were going to get help from the Dodgers. It's in Colorado, L.A doesn't have nearly as much to play for, and they were totally worthless helping us against the Rockies last time.
  19. They could sign all those guys for the price of Garza's contract coming off, more or less. That would still put them at the lowest salary in MLB, so enough money to spend on the bullpen, SP, and bats. Not saying they should ramp up payroll drastically this year, but they certainly could. Walker alone should get more than what Garza makes this year. I think people are underestimating his market for years and dollars. If he's willing to stick around for 2/25, great. Otherwise, I'd pass. I'm more hopeful on bringing back Swarzek, but no idea really on his market. 2/12? This isn't going to be a real popular opinion, but I think 2018 may be a bit of a transitional season. There's just too many factors working against us, particularly with the Nelson injury. Most of our top arms in the minors look more like 2019 or later help than 2018, and I don't expect Brinson to be a huge factor next year. So all in all, I don't expect them to go back into rebuilding mode, but I could see a bit of a step back to the 75-80 win range. Then with some top arms emerging and Nelson (hopefully) returning to full strength, 2019 may really be when our window starts to open. They may choose to be rather aggressive in the off-season with signs and trades to try to keep that from happening, and that's fine, but I hope they don't get too aggressive with trading away farm pieces to do it.
  20. There is a time and place for acquiring name talent to put you over the edge. Gray might have put us over the edge to a wildcard berth, maybe. We also likely don't get nearly the same look as we have at Woodruff, who has put up fairly similar numbers to Gray since the trade BTW. We are much better off as a franchise holding our chips for the most part and waiting until the core is more ready to compete. In addition, it's absolutely possible that all of Burnes/Woodruff/Hader end up being more valuable rotation pieces than Gray in the near future. 2 of those 3 are already looking better than Gray, and I'm sure we'll get a look at Burnes next year. Putting Gray into a spot blocks at least one of those guys from a look at the MLB level. I would not have given Hader up for Quintana or Gray, but Woodruff has been a primary cause of this team losing ground at the end of the year in my opinion. How so? We were completely shut out in 3 of his starts. Doesn't really matter if you have Wes Obermueller or Clayton Kershaw on the mound if you don't score any runs, you're not going to win. Against the Nationals he went 7 innings and 1 run and we ended up losing, can't really put that one on him either. Only loss you could really attribute to a bad Woodruff start is his last outing prior to yesterday vs. the Cubs. But we did still have chances to win that one too.
