  1. TT and his terrible ability to draft OL has seriously compromised Rodgers over the years. Thank god the man has escapability that few have because he should be David Carr'd by now. It's inexcusable. Seriously? He has two franchise tackles in Bahktiari and Bulaga and he drafted both of them. Not his fault that not only are they hurt but so are their replacements. TT is not a perfect GM by any means but he doesn't have a terrible ability to draft OL. Yeah Spriggs looks like a bad pick but Bahktiari, Bulaga, Linsley, Tretter, Sitton, Lang and others over the years have been very good ones. When healthy this was one of the best lines in football the last couple years.
  2. Did someone in the crowd really just yell the 'We want a pitcher, not a belly itcher' thing? I haven't heard that since I was like, 8.
  3. You would think Sedar would have to be gone after this year. The 'good old boy' system can only buy you so many years -- you would THINK.
  4. Noodle arm Billy Hamilton? Was that supposed to be in blue? Yeah, it's not fair that he's fast and has a gun. For some reason I can't stand him. Probably because he seems to kill us, but other than those 2 things you mentioned he's a lousy baseball player.
  5. The division window officially closes tonight, and I'm starting to accept that it's becoming extremely likely that we're going to fall short. Still proud of the team for the season they've had. If some miracle happens in the last few games -- great. But I think this is probably the nail in the coffin.
  6. Noodle arm Billy Hamilton? Was that supposed to be in blue?
  7. The Reds have the worst pitching staff in the league, and you want to blow your closer in the 3rd inning? Or should that have been in blue? If Knebel gets 3 outs at any point of the game then he is not being "blown", just randomly saving your best pitcher until the 9th inning is not a good strategy. If we had a bases loaded situation with a pitcher due up in the 4th inning, should we use our best pinch hitter or someone else so we can save our best one for later? There is no better possible scenario to use your best pinch hitter than bases loaded, and there is no better time to use your best pitcher than with the bases loaded, needing a strikeout with the season on the line. In addition, it is better to use Knebel earlier because if he has a quick inning he can be used to face more hitters than only 3 if was saved for the 9th. I totally agree with this. The 3rd inning can be high leverage, and the game can get away from you there if you don't so something about it -- And it did. 'Conventional wisdom' has come a long ways but still has a long ways to go. Unfortunately most managers are still married to the idea of closers = 9th inning and 3 run or less lead.
  8. Early in the season everyone wanted to throw Drake and Hughes to the curb and just bring in guys like Wang. Heck I was hoping Wang would get a shot eventually. Different isn't always better. Not that Drake and Hughes are great.
  9. Blowing that scoring chance in the 1st may prove to be very, very costly. This is....pretty much last call for us. 2.5 games with 4 to go ...yeah, it's mathematically possible, but someone needs to get swept in the last series at that point and more help and yeah, it would pretty much be over.
  10. Braun swings at Ball 4 on a 3-1 count and ends up grounding into a double play instead. So we go from bases loaded nobody out to 2 out with a man on 3rd just like that. There's just too much on the line for things like that to happen right now.
  11. You know what IS a sure thing? How good Josh Hader has been for the pen in the 2nd half. You cannot just assume that removing him from the bullpen equation wouldn't have affected our 2nd half results in greater ways than the opposite effect of having Gray. You also cannot assume that Brett Phillips would have been an acceptable headliner of any deal for Gray.
  12. Games are in Colorado and L.A. has a lot less to play for. I think it's totally possible Colorado goes no better than 1-2 but I wouldn't go as far as to call it likely.
  13. Man this Adam Conley guy is an absolute scrub.
  14. Marlins with a bad matchup already down 3-0 early. Looking like another lousy day on the help front.
  15. I actually just read something on this, did they change it and the all star game doesn't decide home field advantage for NL/AL world series anymore? I read that their magic number is 3 to clinch home field advantage for the world series, if it changed...when did that happen? Yes, this started last season. HFA goes to best record, so they are still competing with the Indians and Astros.
  16. Something also to consider is that the Dodgers have not yet locked up HFA for the World Series. Until they do, I doubt they want to let that slip away and risk being on the road for 4 games in the playoffs.
  17. Yes, but that was not really the approach used in 2008-11. It was pretty much 'win now.' Our farm system was in shambles for several years after the Greinke trade.
  18. Stearns definitely came out looking better in his pen deadline deals for Jeffress and Swarzek than the Cubs did for Wilson, as Swarzak has been great and Jeffress perfectly serviceable for us and we gave up very little. My only criticism, if you even want to call it that, is the impact that Pat Neshek could have had on this race. I don't normally advocate bidding wars, but the bidding was so low for him, (the Phillies took 3 lottery tickets), that a better package for us might have been Carlos Herrera, Braden Webb, and Troy Stokes. The Phillies also threw in some cash to get the prospects they did, while I'm sure we would have been willing to absorb the rest of Neshek's salary to sweeten the pot. Even if we would have had to do a little bit better than that, we're not talking about giving up any top prospects. That's one way we could have significantly impacted the race without going all in on a guy like Gray or Quintana. Don't get me wrong, Stearns did well at the deadline. But Knebel, Hader, Neshek and Swarzek as your top 4 finishing games since the end of the July likely makes the difference right now between being 1.5 down and 1.5 up, especially since it would have kept Neshek away from the team we're battling.
  19. Unfortunately if we end up in a 2 way tie with the Rockies they will host the game. Reason being the tiebreaker will be games within the division since we are tied with them head to head. Which seems totally dumb to me. We don't even play in the same division, so how is their division record relevant to ours in any way in terms of a tiebreaker? The result would be the same if it went by league record but at least I would understand it then.
  20. Subject: Wild Card: Forget about it If we take care of business vs. Cincy with a sweep those last 2 games with the Cards and Cubs are of little consequence anyway. We'd be at least 2 up heading into the last series so they couldn't pass us without sweeping at which point let's be honest, it'd be game over for us anyway.
  21. You make it seem so easy. You just have to acquire a whole bunch of talented minor leaguers and then that will always automatically turn into a successful winning franchise. The problem is that's what we did in the late 2000s. We had two possible future Hall of Famers in the middle of our lineup plus three or four very good secondary pieces for a number of years. What did we win? One wild card birth and one division title three years later. And why did we even win that? Becuase we traded minor leaguers for big name talent. Without CC we don't make the playoffs in 08. Without Greinke and maybe even Marcum we don't make the playoffs in 11. I understand your love for prospects and I agree that a franchise like Milwaukee has to build from within. But there is absolutely a place for big name talent. Prospects fail like.....all the time. We cannot solely rely on our prospects and expect to win year in and year out. Gray was there for the having and we balked. It's understandable but now because of a series of unfortunate events not only are we unlikely to make the playoffs this season but we have a big hole to fill in our 2018 rotation. I agree with some of your points but you can't just assume we wouldn't have made the playoffs at all over the last 10 years without going for it twice and just sticking with our young core. Heck the Royals went to 2 World Series and won one largely in part because of the young players we traded to them.
  22. I think they'll definitely be resting some guys in their regular lineup like Turner. Not sure about the rotation .
  23. Bottom line, we gotta sweep the Reds. If we do, one game out of the WC is the WORST we can be sitting at after Thursday.
  24. Given that Jimmy is still on the 40 man, is there any logical reason that he was not placed on the 60 day DL and a spot given to someone like DeJesus who was pretty much totally expendable anyway and could have given us an extra bench bat? I realize you have to pay the guy the prorated minimum which would have been 50-75K or whatever and he wouldn't have been playoff eligible, but neither of those things seem very consequential in a pennant race when you're in desperate need of winning every game and we've had extra inning games where we've burned through our entire bench.
  25. Maybe we would have? But I don't think it's totally certain, because you also have to account for the negative value of losing starts in the 2nd half from guys who have been pretty good starting for us, like Suter and Woodruff, and if you trade Hader losing the value he has had to the pen which has been even more dramatic. So I don't think it's totally certain that acquiring Quintana would have dramatically affected our record. I also totally agree with the second part of what you said, but I wonder why people generally feel that way moreso now (don't give up the farm for a playoff spot, build a better foundation first), whereas back in 2008 it was the opposite, most fans felt, it doesn't really matter what we gave up for CC, he got us to the playoffs.
