  1. Most likely this is all for nothing as I think they'll get OSU and lose and probably head to the Cotton Bowl again or the Peach Bowl. But at least we are still in a position to speculate the possibility.
  2. I'll predict a somewhat disappointing 8th in the next CFP. We pass OSU and PSU obviously but get passed up by Miami. Still behind TCU.
  3. Honestly, I know they are 3-6 but Indiana is not THAT bad. They have a very quality non-conference win by 17 in Virginia. Their schedule has been absolutely loaded -- OSU, PSU, MSU, Michigan, Wisconsin. Losses to MSU and Michigan were by 1 score. Their worst loss -- by 3, was to Maryland, which isn't a good loss but isn't by any means a dreadful one. I fully realize that beating Indiana isn't going to do us favors with the committee, but I'm just saying, they're probably a lot better than their record indicates.
  4. Still looks pretty likely to me that they face OSU. OSU hosts MSU next week and especially after today I expect OSU to win. But that game may decide it. Unless they do win but end up losing to Michigan the final week...then things get even sicker. But yes, Iowa, Michigan, and whoever their opponent would be certainly should all qualify as quality wins. Win them all + Minnesota and I think they'd have a hard time keeping us out. But yes unfortunately even though the natural inclination is to be happy about MSU and PSU losses today, the reality is that it doesn't do anything positive for us.
  5. I honestly think an argument could be made that the Penn State Ohio State losses hurt us more than help us. Yeah we'll move ahead of them, but that was inevitable anyway if we ran the table. Now even if we win the Big Ten Championship it'll be over likely a 3 loss team and not be as big of a win as the committee will want to see.
  6. Me too. I think he's a dark horse candidate for an MLB bullpen spot. I wonder, though, if they'd assign him to AAA and stretch him out as a starter? The team doesn't have many pitchers in the system with his type of stuff/make-up. If he does manage to work out and be a contributor, that Gomez/Fiers for Hader/Santana/Phillips/Houser trade goes from great to magical. This trade is on the verge of being magical whether Houser does anything or not. Santana has been incredibly productive and projects to continue. Phillips will likely open with the MLB club. Hader will either get a chance to fulfill his ace ceiling or get relegated to Andrew Miller duty, hard to say which route we'll go. That alone makes it a crazy good trade. If Houser ends up helping to fill the 8th spot/shuttle service role between AAA and MLB, I'll be happy. That will give him a chance to get his feet wet against MLB hitters and see how he does. I'd put his ceiling closer to Jacob Barnes than Knebel though. And to think none of it would have happened if the Mets didn't get cold feet on Carlos Gomez.
  7. How would we have any idea if this is true or not?
  8. Arrieta is an exciting projection in name, but the HR rate, age, and drop in velocity all scare me. 4/100 sounds fair, but it's not a matter of if that contract becomes an albatross, it's a matter of when. If we got 3 highly productive years as an ace/#2, it'd be well worth it. But I'd bet more on 1-2.
  9. It depends on your versatility elsewhere. Sogard can cover anywhere in the IF and Perez can play just about anywhere at all, so as long as you have some versatility on your bench it's not too big of a deal to carry a 1B only.
  10. Yeah, I can't see Drake back. He's a complete liability against RHP. If he were good enough at what he does as a reverse LOOGY, I could see him returning, but he's not. He's only ok at the best thing he does. There's a lot of exciting up and coming options for relievers in our Milb system and I'm excited to see them get a shot. Maybe Taylor Williams has a Hader-like 2018 for us.
  11. And Nottingham does? I'm not even saying Nottingham will be left off. I'm just saying you can't saying that Dubon and Diplan won't because of production and then call Nottingham a lock. Dubon will be on the 40. No doubt, unless traded.
  12. I didn't think we'd come close to top 4 at this point yet. I have no issue with Georgia and Bama on top. I think Notre Dame is overrated as usual, but I don't have a huge problem with them in the top 4. Where I start to have an enormous problem is Clemson at #4. So wait, you're telling me we get dinged all the way out of the top 8 just on SOS, and Clemson winds up in the playoffs after actually LOSING a game to a 4 loss Syracuse team? They don't even get dinged for that? We're not talking a loss to Georgia here, we're talking a loss to a team that couldn't beat Middle Tennessee. That's a joke. Because they beat who, Auburn? It's not even like they've been destroying teams. They don't have a win by more than 14 since September 23rd. The playoff system seems to be getting less and less results oriented, and I have a big problem with that. It's like the committee is gathering and saying, 'Well, wins and losses be damned, these are the teams we THINK are the best 4."
  13. Anderson will probably be around for three years, and dealt. With the way Burnes, Perrin, and Yamamoto are pitching (especially the track records of Burnes and Perrin), I foresee some significant turnover in the rotation. Those are some mighty odd prospects to group in with Burnes in trying to predict the future Brewer rotation. But seriously, I have a hard enough time trying to imagine who the Brewers will be looking to trade in 1 year much less 3.
  14. If he continues to perform this contract will pay him well over $30M. If he tanks, he may only earn just over $11M. Don't know how motivated he is by team success but I would sure think more than doubling his lifetime earnings should be more than enough reason to continue to try to improve.
  15. I thought it was interested after Anderson's extension that Stearns said he is in discussions with other current Brewers about extensions. MLBtraderumors speculated Knebel, Santana and Shaw as probably the 3 likeliest. Knebel seems more like a year to year guy for me as a reliever, but if they really believe in him, with the price of relievers, they might look for a discount now. He'll already get a nice raise as a Super 2 this year. Both Santana and Shaw also have 4 years left of control, though neither is arby eligible yet. I guess Santana being younger is probably a more logical extension candidate than Shaw, but who knows. Davies? Also 4 years control left. So none of these guys are particularly urgent and all would need to sacrifice a year or two of free agency to make this worthwhile. There seems to be a familiar theme here though -- a lot of our core hitting free agency in 2022, so I can understand why they want to look to extend one or more now.
  16. it would be so nice for the brewers if Villar returned to his 2015 self and the brewers could rely him to hit leadoff everyday. 2016 self? Yes. I think Villar hit a lot better from August on. The stats say so... I sensed that Counsell gave up on him When the Brewers acquired Walker I said it was more or less the end of Villar's season. It was.
  17. Dubon is probably a future career utility infielder himself at the MLB level. The extra speed off the bench is a nice bonus too, but he's not a guy who strikes me as a future lineup regular.
  18. My honest preference would be to let Villar have one more shot in 2018 at the regular 2B job and give him a long leash with Sogard/Perez as the backups. I just don't know if they're willing to go into 2018 with that much uncertainty at 2B which is why I don't think Villar being non-tendered is as unthinkable as others do.
  19. If they can't trade Villar, and considering they couldn't trade Gennett last offseason that's more likely scenario than you think, my guess is they just non-tender him. Your guess would be wrong. They aren't going to non-tender a 26-year-old who just a year ago hit .285 with decent power and 60 SBs. Regardless of how much you seem to hate Villar, he is going to be given every opportunity to win the 2B job against next spring. The only way he's gone is if he perhaps is part of a trade. i don't know why you're having such a hard time believing Villar could be non-tendered. He was very bad in 2017 and doesn't profile well as a utility infielder. Yes, he had a very nice 2016 and based on that, someone will give him a shot at the big league level. Just don't know if that will be us. I still would put him at more likely to be tendered than not, but the chance of him not is more real than you're making it out to be. Of course they would prefer a trade, but if one happens it won't be for much. He isn't worth much more if any more than Scooter was worth in the spring.
  20. Nice. Frankly, I can't believe he wants to be anywhere near a baseball right now, I wouldn't. I give him credit for that for sure.
  21. I don't get why Schwarber has any major value at all. He wasn't an elite prospect, he can't hit a lick, is so-so at getting on base, can't steal a bag and can't play defense. He's got one tool, some pop. I don't understand reports that the Cubs traded Torres over Schwarber for Chapman, if true. And I agree if Schwarber is worth anything at all, Broxton should be too.
  22. I'm very thankful to be in these shoes, because a lot of people don't get to this point. It means my family is taken care of and I can just focus on baseball and we can win a World Series," Anderson said. "The timing for me was right, being in the middle of arbitration. I'm not a guy that likes to truly go year to year. It's a gamble. When a team offers you an extension and it's guaranteed money, it's hard to turn it down. It's security for your family. I'm a person who wants my family to be taken care of no matter what happens." Bingo, Chase. Wish more guys thought this way instead of just dreaming of bigger numbers. No matter what happens to you now, you and your family will never have to worry about money again. That's all anybody reasonable could ever dream of. Anything else is just the cherry on top.
  23. Absolutely nothing not to like about this. Worst case scenario if something happens we can back out prior to what would have been his last arby year. Best case scenario if he continues to pitch as he did in 2017 we've got him for 4 more years now instead of 3. There is almost literally no risk for us in this deal.
  24. We have so many promising young arms -- Hader, Woodruff, Ortiz, Burnes, Peralta, Ponce, Williams, Medeiros, Kirby, etc etc, that we finally have the opportunity to stop pursuing 2nd and 3rd tier arms at market value. I'd prefer internal upgrades to the rotation only, with the exception of a controllable TOR starter becoming available via trade. I also second whoever questioned how an opt-out is ever possibly beneficial to the team. If we front-load a deal with Lynn with an opt-out for the back end years, we either end up paying more on a per-year basis and then lose him when the annual rate finally gets more team friendly, or he fades on the back end like a Lohse, Wolf or Garza, doesn't opt out and we get stuck with a bad contract.. Nothing to like about that from a team perspective either way.
  25. Especially about a guy who, let's be honest, is pretty much right on the border between 'prospect' and 'organizational depth'. Might as well fire up a 'How do we feel about Wendell Rijo' thread. To answer the OP however he has demonstrated more power than I expected but i would still expect him to have a 5th OFer ceiling if he's ever fortunate enough to make the show.
