  1. They're not losing because they have nothing to play for. They'd probably be better off telling themselves they have nothing to play for because they seem to be pressing like crazy. They want to win right now, and they need to get it turned around whether clinched or not. But yeah, it was about a week ago (?) or so that we were just a half game out of the WC and they had L.A. and Arizona coming up. Looked like a good opportunity but now Colorado got hot.
  2. Yeah count me in the camp of someone who would rather invest thst 5M in Swarzak. I'm thinking 2 years and $8M should be about right for Swarzak given his lack of a track record. Thst would be a much better investment than 5M for a mediocre 5th starter/mop up man. Even if we want to wait on Burnes, Ortiz, and Freddy Peralta, which is fine, there are numerous cheap options in our system that we could audition that would be likely to outproduce or at least match Garza. Jungmann, Wilkerson and Derby just to name a few.
  3. There's no doubt that this season, no matter what happens now, has been successful. I think it's more likely than not that they'll fall short of the playoffs, but I never would have expected them to be playing meaningful baseball in September this year. That said, the emotional yo-yo this last month of rising to the challenge when you least expect it against elite teams, and then completely disappointing against the bad ones, has been pretty tough.
  4. Ominous start given exactly what we are all expecting this series following a sweep at Wrigley .
  5. Woodruff is going to be a Brewer for 6 seasons. If they could have gotten the deal done without Brinson but not without Woodruff, would you have still wanted to make the deal? Even knowing now what Woodruff has done since then and therefore Gray would have likely been worth no additional wins this year?
  6. We can't call him up because he's not on the 40 man, and we will need Nelson's vacant spot for another pitcher. Anyway, Wren's numbers really aren't that impressive considering the environment. .364 on base percentages grow on trees in Colorado Springs.
  7. We still have 3 starters in Davies, Anderson, and Woodruff that I feel confident in. We need to find a 4th in the next couple weeks if we're going to play beyond that. Hopefully Jungmann can be it.
  8. I say this as a Brewer fan -- why should it need to be a truly neutral site? These are Marlin home games they're relocating. Not sure why MLB needs to make it a priority that we benefit from 3 less road game atmospheres.
  9. I've been trying hard to find justification for Perez leading off, so I looked up his splits and see he has a .371 OBP vs lefties this year. So that helps.
  10. Agreed. No more Garza, no more Guerra. Not interested in Jungmann much either. Wilkerson should get the nod for sure. #5? No idea Peralta and Burnes are at with pitch limits, would love to see either. Otherwise maybe Suter/ Hader combo to get you through 6 innings. Also, for those of you saying it's over.....nonsense. wasn't over when Anderson went down, or when Guerra turned out to be bad all year. Wasn't over when bullpen was imploding seemingly every night. And it wasn't over for the past couple months when they have struggled to score more than 2 runs a game. Baseball, in fact sports in general are unpredictable. For all we know, offense heats up the rest of the year, Wilkerson steps right in and pitches great, who knows. What I do know is a win tomorrow puts them 2 games out of 1st. And that it did. I want to clarify (and it seems you already understood this) that I was referring to Freddy Peralta, not Wily. I don't see a single person that wants to see Wily in a Brewer uniform again so I think everyone is referring to Freddy but just clarifying.
  11. No help this weekend from the Dodgers, their funk has been pretty remarkable. First team in 58 years to have both a 14-1 and 1-14 stretch in the same season.
  12. I don't think this really has anything to do with the Brewers. The Cardinals gave up a top 20 organizational prospect in this deal. I'd be pretty irritated if we did that for less than a month of a guy who wouldn't even be playoff eligible. Its a highly similar trade to Swarzak for Cordell, only we got an extra 5 weeks plus and playoff eligibility. The Cardinals also just traded Mike Leake at the end of August so I'd actually argue that their recent sequence of moves is pretty odd. The real winners were the Phillies who get a prospect just for paying for a guy for a week and the real losers were obviously the Pirates. They essentially said Niasco was claimed by a division rival when they put him on revocable waivers. So they literally chose to get nothing for him rather than trade him within the division, which is obviously completely idiotic and another example of why the whole taboo about trading within the division is just dumb. All this even though Niasco is a free agent in a month anyway and would be no help to a division rival in the future.
  13. How many stolen bases have been taken away in the past 20-30 years? You fall over while attempting a "defensive indifference", you're going to get tagged out. A stolen base is a stolen base. I am passionate about this. Hey everyone has their pet peeves . Mine is when a pop fly drops between two confused fielders because no one called for it and the batter gets a 'double' for it, plays like that. Or no error because 'can't assume a double play.' It the relay throw is 5 feet wide of 1st or else the runner would have been out by 3 steps, why the heck can't I assume a double play? To your defensive indifference argument. I'm not terribly passionate about it one way or another, but I guess my counter-argument would be that a stolen base is intended to a measurement of a baserunning skill. It requires no skill to jog on over to the next base when you're not being held on. It would definitely bloat and obscure the stolen base statistic. On your pitchers batting argument, I don't totally disagree. Baseball with the DH is a different brand of baseball. It takes a lot of strategy out of the game, like the double switch. So it would be a big change. I'd still prefer it personally anyway, but some kind of uniformity between the leagues is what I'm really looking for here. And there's obviously a lot better chance of the DH coming to the NL than pitchers batting in the AL.
  14. I'd prefer the DH, but I'd be more ok with pitchers batting in both leagues than just the NL. The defensive indifference thing seems like a weird thing to care about, however
  15. Sure, mathematically not. Realistically, I'll stand by what I said that they need to sweep now to make this a race again. 2 of 3 and then you still need 3 of 4 in the next series which is a big ask, and then that still leaves you with 2 games to make up just to tie, and there just isn't a lot of ground to be made up against the soft remaining schedule for the Cubs. If they come out of this series down 4, the Cubs still have 6 games left on this homestand including 3 against the Mets...I just don't see them continuing to hang around in the division race in that scenario. Without Nelson, pretty much over for us at this point. Even if we snuck in somehow, we don't go anywhere without Jimmy. Anderson, Davies and Woodruff have all been highly effective as well. They'd need to find a 4th guy but they still have some good starters who can all win us a game on any given day.
  16. I know it's easy to say they can't replace Nelson, and they probably can't, but being in a pennant race, they owe it to themselves to try, especially with so many options. Something beyond the norm is necessary now. Jungmann, Wilkerson, Peralta, Burnes, Derby, Hader ... I don't know what the answer is, but trotting out some combo of Garza, Suter and Guerra for 40% of the rest of our games isn't going to get us to the playoffs.
  17. Coincidence that both times the Cubs tried doing something questionable for a competitive advantage against us this year, they got kicked in the mouth?
  18. Jimmy to the 60 and Wilkerson to the 40 and MLB is my guess.
  19. Pick up in September? Who? Any pitching help will be internal I would think. Pretty much has to be.
  20. This is the equivalent of saying "It would be fine if one league permitted players to run over the catcher and the other didn't, because catchers can still be injured either way." How many of those AL pitcher injuries were related to hitting or baserunning? Don't know how many there's been in the NL but I can think of 2 just on this team.
  21. Can't be blowing opportunities in a key series like this. Please eject that obnoxious drunk bellowing "SWING!!!" on every pitch.
  22. One pitch, one out. I cannot understand the unfathomable logic of batting a guy leadoff who hacks wildly at every pitch he sees and has the worst OBP in the lineup . Offense isn't going well so let's just do something totally insane to see if it snaps them out of it?
  23. I'd give Jungmann a look. Last time I looked, I think he has under a 3.00 era at CS, which is saying something. We've just kind of been there done that with Jungmann, which is why I'd prefer to just take a shot with Wilkerson. Who knows, maybe he has that beginner's success you sometime see when the league hasn't seen the guy. But I'd rather try Jungmann than Garza for sure.
  24. How about this: Release Garza, Nelson to 60 day DL, add Peralta and Wilkerson to the 40 and rotation. Why not? Find out about two pitching prospects while also giving yourself a better shot this year. Both guys have to be added to the 40 after this year anyway, so there's really no downside. If they manage to help us get to the playoffs then whichever one performs better could be added to the playoff roster as Nelson's replacement.
  25. He has been so good this year too. Like Corbin Burnes good. K numbers are off the charts. Don't know if he will be able to match Nelson but we might as well take a shot. We are in a pennant race with a completely dead offense, a swingman/6th starter does us no good. I hope this doesn't mean Garza stays in the rotation the rest of the year but I'm afraid it will.
