  1. I think overall Stearns has done a fair to good job. But it's also fair to question some of his moves. He absolutely has not been "perfect", and it's fair to point out that a lot of the bottom-roster churn is (at least on the surface) seemingly busy work for the appearance of being busy. We have guys who have been acquired and then DFA'd (multiple guys) who have never even put on uniforms. It's fair to say "this move and this move and this move and this move were good moves. That move and that move were a bit puzzling". I don't have to agree with 100% of the moves he makes to think he's doing a good job. The two things can be mutually exclusive. Agreed that I haven't agreed with all of his moves (nor is any GM going to hit on 100% of his moves.) But I think quoting his job as 'fair to good' probably understates him. He basically covered 1B, 2B, CF, C with average to above average MLB regulars for essentially nothing. You could kind of throw in 3B too if you consider Dubon the main return for Thornburg, although I'm not totally convinced yet Shaw will be an average or better starter. Half the starting lineup not even mentioning guys like Guerra, the pen, or any of the prospects.
  2. I know that small sample defensive metrics are basically meaningless, but I still found it incredible that Fangraphs grades out Villar as a slightly above average defender at 2nd for his first 10 games. http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=10071&position=SS
  3. I dont think it will happen it just should. If you are complaining about tiptoeing on the line that should not be a reviewable play because it would not be an obviously horrible call. Replay should only be used for things that you can tell are wrong with your bare eyes watching in real time. If you need to consult a slow mo instant replay its too close just move on If you used it only on things you can tell with your eyes in real time are wrong, you'd be using it once a month or so and might as well get rid of it. The game happens so fast and the point of replay is to slow it down and correct the call. When Broxton stole 2nd in the 8th or 9th last night I thought it was clear that he was safe. When they went to review it was clear he was out. They got the call right and it did not take a ridiculous amount of time. I'm all for sticking to the 2 minute time limit and sticking with the call if you find yourself splitting hairs, but the whole benefit of having a replay system is to be able to slow it down and get the call right. The vast majority of calls aren't 100% obvious in real time. Most become much more obvious when you slow it down.
  4. They do have a consequence, they can't challenge again unless it's an official review. Come on, this would be like ejecting a wide receiver in the NFL who tiptoed the sidelines and thought he made a catch and told the coach to throw the red flag and ends up upheld. Replay is here to stay. Just part of the game now. They are never going to remove players from the game because of a failed challenge.
  5. You mean like Millone? Well, yeah, thought of that as soon as I typed it, but they don't have to start Milone - it should be Jungmann or Lopez (not like they are young and still working their way up like Hader and Woodruff), and Guerra and Garza are injured. In reality, Milone should be their #9 starter. I'm with you there. I'd much rather see them cover with a young arm than Milone. If it were longer term I think they would be.
  6. You mean like Millone? I was going to say, we are basically trotting out a lefty Arroyo
  7. Well when you have a .500 BABIP... Seriously though he has done pretty well so far. Hoping once he gets comfortable that HR power will start to show and get us all really excited. Well there's one..
  8. Nelson is just brutal keeping runners close. Both of those throws from Pina tonight were perfect and he still never had a chance to get him.
  9. Was going to say this before the Braun HR, but for some reason, probably because of the Aguilar hype, Thames' fast start is being overlooked. It shouldn't be. He's been everything we hoped for so far.
  10. I don't think those prospects are out of the question but the other part of the equation is how much salary we're paying or taking back in bad contracts.
  11. Not laughing at you...just the very thought of that. Braun was one of the worst defensive 3rd basemen of all time 10 years ago. At SS he would make Villar look like Ozzie Smith. Confidence is always a good thing though.
  12. It depends. Do we know that Braun will still waive his 10/5 with no strings attached if we wait until after the 24th to go West? If we're concerned about that day, then maybe we don't know that. His interview seems to clarify a lot surrounding his 10-5 rights. Mainly because Ryan Braun himself doesn't think it means a whole lot. I don't think we would have any problem shipping him out to a West coast contender. Seems the Brewers would like to trade him and Braun would love to be closer to home contending. Though it was reported last month he prefers to play for the Dodgers, staying here is second, and then the other 5 teams he can currently be traded to. That being said I don't think it would be hard to convince him to move to another California team even after he gets 10-5 rights. He is a very interesting case with the 10-5 rights kicking in May 24th where it wouldn't be shocking to see a trade happen there instead of in July. Any history of a player getting traded early to avoid 10-5 rights? On another note I am confused what Braun was referring to when he said the no trade clause was significant last year when "the trade" almost happened. When I think of "the trade" I think of the Dodgers trade, but in that trade his no trade clause was the opposite of significant. No idea. Any chance there was a mystery trade for Braun agreed upon to a different team which somehow never got out and Braun vetoed it?
  13. We will sweep the Reds, I'm calling it. I think the Brewers are sneaky good. Just a great lineup offensively. Not one hitter I cringe or not look forward to. Maybe Bandy or Kirk. What has Bandy done to upset you? He's hitting . 278 with a .864 OPS and a HR.
  14. It depends. Do we know that Braun will still waive his 10/5 with no strings attached if we wait until after the 24th to go West? If we're concerned about that day, then maybe we don't know that.
  15. I agree. It just makes good business sense. We have a glutton of outfielders at the MLB level and in the system, and Braun just doesn't really fit the direction right now. Plus there's no telling how his health will hold up. I know there's sentimental value here for many, but it's best to just move on.
  16. I can see Braun possibly being worth 4/76, but I think the length of his contract is probably a lot of the reason he wasn't traded this off-season. If he had 2/38 remaining I don't think it would have been as big of a deal to another team. Also unless Braun would break down in a way that would leave him completely unable to play like Prince Fielder, and therefore still be able to collect the remainder of his contract, I can't see him walking away early. It's almost unprecedented for a player to voluntarily walk away from that much money remaining on his contract and retire.
