  1. Kind of makes you wonder why we didn't just non-tender him in the first place, but that puts the Reds on the hook now, so no harm no foul.
  2. Fair enough. I agree it's all dependent on the return, Wily just seems like a guy to me that isn't going to get enough based on the last two seasons to garner a return that is high enough to justify giving up his upside and control. Mendez of course I would take, but he's not bringing that back. I don't know much about the deeper parts of their system either, but if we're talking something like 3 project arms of an Adam Lind return, I would say that's not enough. Maybe I'm still clinging to the time when Peralta was the big up and coming arm in our system, but I still see too much upside in him to sell him low. I still think he could possibly be reborn as a power reliever too, which if it pans out, those kinds of pitchers have a lot more trade value than what he has right now.
  3. I'm just not a hat guy. Kind of grateful for that now!
  4. Yea, no need for more talent equivalent to Erceg, Ponce, Harrison... Yea, no need for a 3 year controllable fairly young already proven MLB caliber starter who was once the top prospect in our system, throws in the upper 90s, and had a 2.92 ERA in the 2nd half of last season either. All I said was that trading Peralta for someone of that mold isn't worth it. I never said there was no need for another talent like Ponce or Harrison. Erceg doesn't really belong grouped in with the other two being a clear cut above both and a top 10 prospect in the organization on just about any reputable list.
  5. Here's where I'm at with trading Wily. If the Rangers are after him, it's likely that they think he's coming pretty cheap. If we were to trade him for a reliever, I'd want a young power arm that could be a late inning fixture in our pen for years. Especially with the cost of relievers these days, he isn't bringing back that. He's not bringing a top 100 either, and trading him for another 11-20 organizational prospect isn't worth it. I liked what I saw from him the 2nd half of last season. If he can build on that, when he's on, his stuff is as good as anyone else currently in our rotation. I'd rather see where he can go with that. He's got 3 years left of control. If he put together a big season and we look closer to contention, he could still be a part of that. If not, he could be worth a lot more this time next year. Sure, he could tank and be a non-tender candidate next year. But if he does, its not like we're going to miss out on a top prospect by waiting and seeing with him now.
  6. Isn't it 'bologna' when referring to the meat, and 'baloney' when referring to nonsense?
  7. Yes and no. If he's your homegrown guy, your Mike Trout or Clayton Kershaw, for instance, you stand a better chance at keeping him for his career than every other team. Like we did with Braun.
  8. While I agree with the cost control aspect of Guerra certainly benefiting his trade value, to me there's still some differences here because of Guerra's age. Yes, an average prospect can flame out too, but the other side of the coin gives the prospect about 10-15 years of potential value if he pans out. Guerra is certainly on the clock because of his age. I like him a lot, but even if he becomes what we hope, there's probably 5 years of value here, tops.
  9. I don't think the Giants were very big Bickford fans. So in their minds they didn't give up anything really all that valuable. Though that's just a hunch. Odd to spend your 1st round pick on a guy and trade him a year later if that's the case.
  10. Yeah, there's no reason to go with 3 right now. Just not enough versatility there. Even if you could stick one of them at 1st in a pinch, that's not even really useful enough with then likely being behind Thames, Shaw, and maybe even Aguilar there. Susac will head to AAA if healthy and be up soon enough if he produces there.
  11. Maybe it's an inside joke between BA and Pina and they've been laughing together at our anguish the whole time.
  12. Hey, they did alright that year. Went 81-81, it was their first non-losing season in eons. I do see a lot of parallels between now and 2005. A team on the rise, with a lot of young talent, but not quite there yet.
  13. What Brewer pitcher was it that just seemed to have the worst chemistry and communication with Lucroy? Randy Wolf? They seemed to need mound visits every inning.
  14. Well, so much for his trade value now.
  15. No surprise on either really. I like Marinez, pretty underrated low cost pickup. Guerra was the pick up that Stearns really nailed but Marinez was a good one too. Only question on Pina is whether he will be the starter or backup? I would anticipate it will be close to a split to start the season but in Pina's favor, until him or Bandy establishes themselves as the guy.
  16. It shouldn't come as a surprise, but Manny Pina has been told he has made the Brewers' 25 man roster.
  17. 'We gotta get it done on the field this year...and we can! We got the fighters, we got the gamers, we got the hard workers.' - Ned Yost, 2005
  18. Apparently we also have another 1st baseman named Aguilar in our camp, Ryan Aguilar.
  19. On Blazek, the gist of what I got to sum it up is that we asked him to throw more fastballs in spring training, he did, he did poorly, and we demoted him, and he thinks we demoted him because of his poor spring and says he likes to mix it up and not throw so many fastballs.
  20. I would prefer a Scooter trade as well, and I like Wren, but I think he's a long shot. I wouldn't read much into Counsell's comments. There's not much else he can say if asked directly. He did a pretty good job skirting it, he can't make it sound like he's got a spot, nor make it sound like he's got little chance.
  21. Blazek sounds pretty upset, but if he's surprised, he shouldn't be. He wasn't good last year and wasn't good in spring, and he had an option. It's business. I'm sure he's disappointed but at this point he needs to head to Colorado Springs and do his job. Chances are he'll be up at some point.
  22. So the pen is sort of starting to come into focus. Feliz Torres Marinez Knebel Milone? Cravy? Whoever the 6th man is in the rotation order? That would be my best guess right now. Suter, Jungmann, and Barnes optioned.
  23. Here's my thoughts on the matter: 1) Santana could improve his defense. He's still young enough and to my knowledge he wasn't seen as a defensive liability going into last year. So we'll have to see if he can improve enough to be at least average there. He was pretty bad last year. 2) If he doesn't, how much tolerance the regime would have for it would I'm sure depend on how the development of the others comes along. Stearns seems to place a higher premium on defense than Melvin, and I don't think an .800 or so OPS is going to cut it if he's as bad as a defensive liability as last year, provided that Broxton is coming along as hoped and someone in the system is emerging in the near future such as Brinson or Phillips or Cordell, which seems fairly likely. 3) Someone from this is likely emerging as trade bait as some point. Braun is the most preferable, obviously, but it remains to be seen how much the NTC will affect that possibility, and of course, he has to keep hitting too. Santana could turn into a significant trade piece if he turns in a healthy, and offensively significant season, but his defense and the emergence of others prevents him from being a piece Stearns wants to build around.
  24. Beat me to it. Two sources on there said he's the 2nd best SP option on the block. If no one will meet the price for Quintana and someone overpays for Guerra, it's probably the right move to do it if Stearns gets the right offer.
  25. So...with a US va. Puerto Rico final now, doesn't the US sort of win either way?
