  1. Both guys however have been as high as AAA, and Milner was a Rule 5 pick so he'll be in MLB assuming he isn't offered back. Erceg is still outperforming his level significantly. I don't pay much attention to that kind of thing in the spring anyway. Guys like Milner who are playing for a roster spot are often throwing every pitch like it's the most important one of their lives. Veteran pitchers who are 'locks' are often experimenting or trying new things in spring and sometimes get hammered as a result.
  2. Erceg is ridiculous. Should start in Carolina and soar up top 100 lists if he looks like he did last year. Could see him finishing the yesr in Biloxi and maybe getting a cup of coffee in Milwaukee by the end of 2018.
  3. Well from the lineup and bench, with 12-13 spots, I'd assume Braun, Broxton, Santana, Shaw, Perez, Arcia, Villar, Thames, and Gennett are all locks. Then 2 of Susac, Bandy and Pina. Much as I'm not a fan, I don't think there is much Nieuwenhuis can do to play his way off the team. Counsell seems to love him, and we don't have another versatile lefty OF. So the way I see it there's already 12 spots spoken for. And I'd agree, 25th man could be a pen arm or bench guy. But I'd be surprised if it's an outfielder.
  4. Keon Broxton is looking okay this spring.
  5. Cribbage players: You probably know the highest possible hand (29), but what is the highest possible peg count in a round? (2 for cutting nobs doesn't count as pegged points.)
  6. Meh, Alcides Escobar 2.0 wouldn't be a bust, but I'd be disappointed. Escobar has had 3 nice years sprinkled in to a bunch of years when he's been basically replacement level. Jean Segura 2.0 would be fine provided we get the SS version of last year's Jean.
  7. Yeah, someone had to ask. Released by the White Sox, his career started off looking like he was going to be a star, but never really took off. Has a career 101 OPS+ and usually is good for about 2 bWAR or so a season, so he by no means has been bad. He just turned 27, so it's still possible that he has more to offer. Some versatility, can play at 2nd or 3rd. Not really a good platoon player option though, pretty identical splits. A younger and probably better IF depth option than DeJesus. Lawrie likely wouldn't be a good option at SS, but with Arcia firmly entrenched as the starter and with a good backup in Perez that's not really a concern. Worth a look?
  8. Depends what your expectations are, I guess. Arcia was always going to be a glove first SS. But he's got a career .742 OPS in the minors, so we're not talking about a horrible bat here. And like you said, he's only 22. There's likely still some projection in that bat as he develops. It's not at all uncommon to see a kid struggle in his first 200 or so MLB at-bats, and while he struggled he wasn't completely overmatched either. If his eventual ceiling is gold glove caliber shortstop with a .700-.725 OPS, that will be a quality player. I think he'll be fine.
  9. Don't have a subscription, but I was told the Brewers are #3 on their list.
  10. It's not about trying to replace Price, they're not going to replace Price. Just because the pitcher they look to acquire to take his spot isn't going to be the equivalent of David Price doesn't mean they're just going to laugh at any offers that aren't as good as Price. And Boston's need for a utility guy like Perez has been discussed in other threads and Boston's own papers (yes, they mentioned Perez specifically). Guerra and Perez for Groome or Swihart might not get it done but it would be taken a lot more seriously than Braun for Price.
  11. Jorge Lopez strikes me as a guy whose confidence is just shot.
  12. If the Red Sox want Quintana, I think they're going to walk away empty handed if their best offer has Swihart as the key piece.
  13. There was talk about Stearns offering Nelson for Anderson Espinoza when the Red Sox made the Drew Pomeranz trade. Maybe talks can resurface now. I agree that there is no chance in H E double hockey sticks Guerra nets us Groome or Devers, but maybe a somewhat young, controllable starter nets us a better than average package. Boy is Stearns kicking himself now if Nelson for Espinoza was an option and he didn't do it. Don't know who else besides Guerra you're going to dangle out there and get a better than average package. Anderson, Nelson, Peralta and Garza are worth little. Maybe Davies, but with his control you're probably going to need more than the offers are going to be to make it work moving him.
  14. Probably not, but they can take a hike then. Guerra and Perez have a combined 10 years control remaining and cost essentially nothing, and Perez is very young. I can understand why the Red Sox would be reluctant to pay that much, but we have no motivation to just sell guys like Guerra and Perez for more top 11-20 prospect depth.
  15. There's no reason not to trade Perez even at 25 if the offer is fair, especially if you think his 2016 season was an aberration and want to sell high on it. I'm leery however of the Red Sox system as the hype always tends to be a bit over inflated for Boston and New York teams. You're certainly not going to land Benintendi for that but I think for the control that Guerra and Perez offer I'd be going in asking for Devers and probably not get that, but settle for a minimum of a 3 piece offer or so centerpieced on Groome + a couple lotto tickets.
  16. Monte Harrison makes me kind of think of Keon Broxton. Not exactly identical skill sets, but both really talented athletic types who for whatever reason could just not seem to put all the pieces together. Keon looks like he finally might be starting to do just that. Maybe Harrison will too.
  17. I'm really glad I'm not the GM. Good chance I would have just DFAed Broxton last summer.
  18. I also think that you need to approach each individual move uniquely and individually. Not every move while contending needs to be a prospects for players deal, and not every move while rebuilding needs to be players for prospects. (see: Sneed for Villar). So going back to the previous example, say we're in a possible position to contend in late July, and our OF crop is looking best case scenario. Broxton is for real, Santana is breaking out, Phillips, Harrison, and Clark are rebounding, Brinson is ready, and Ray has given us no reason to think he won't be a fast riser. If we have a chance to make a move with the OF excess for something we could use sooner, I wouldn't be against it. But I'd prefer something younger, or at least controlled that could help us later on as well or could be re-flipped later like we did with Greinke, not just a 2 month rental.
  19. Don't be fooled by false records if you don't believe your record is a good reflection of your talent. That was a big mistake on the part of the FO heading into 2015 and gave us a late start on the rebuild. 50-40 doesn't tell us a lot. Are we pretty much on par with last year but the bullpen has been surprisingly lights out and we're 12-3 in one run games? Probably not sustainable.
  20. All of this talk is why I really wanted Braun traded last August. With no DH in the NL, we've kind of painted ourselves into a corner with him the next 4 years if he doesn't waive his NTC.
  21. Fun stat for Pirate fans: Broxton had triple the WAR of Andrew McCutcheon last season in about 1/3rd of the innings and PAs. After being pretty much the worst player in baseball up until the AS break.
  22. If Keon ends up being for real, who between Broxton and Brinson has a more valuable glove in CF and which should be sent to a corner spot?
  23. Windmill Ed Sedar in midseason form. Sending a runner home from 1st on a 1 out double. Throw got to home plate with the runner about halfway down the line at 3rd.
  24. http://m.journaltimes.com/print_specific/column/gery-woelfel-brewers-rebuild-leaves-much-to-be-desired/article_f612c4f8-a101-5505-8b01-4cdfa718ea4c.html Every so often you see some sports 'journalism' that makes you really shake your head. This is one of them. The very idea that Stearns is in over his head is laughable. He's got a long ways to go, but he's already proven he belongs. Of course, no mention in this article of Villar, Broxton, or Guerra, or the acquisition of Brinson, Cordell, and Ortiz. Stearns has 'refused to Jettison' Braun? Trust me Gery, if the offer was right, he'd pull the trigger. It's spectacularly foolish to jettison a player simply for the sake of doing so, without any regard to receiving proper value. I also like how he takes a shot at Stearns for not acquiring a HOF caliber player in just over a year plus as GM. (Not that we would have any idea yet as to whether guys like Brinson or Ray will fit that bill.) The only guy in way over his head here is Gery Woelfel as a sports journalist.
  25. Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report calls Keon Broxton the biggest emerging MLB star centerfielder. Pretty high praise with the company he's in. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2694833-the-biggest-emerging-mlb-star-at-every-position-entering-2017
