  1. Off the top of my head, Diaz, Ray, Diplan, and Erceg should be all headed to Carolina in the spring, wouldn't you think?
  2. I'm sure they know it, but probably not in good taste in their position to rip any of the Brewers coaches/managers beyond the mild 'probably would have done it differently if he had to do it over again.'
  3. That was textbook on how replay SHOULD look. Even though it was close and tough to see, they were able to see it and overturn it quickly.
  4. If your argument for keeping Braun is that you think he will still be performing at a high enough level in 2019 or 2020 to justify keeping him and outweigh any potential trade return for him, I get that. I disagree, but I get it. If your argument for keeping Braun is based on sentiment, I don't understand that. We are rebuilding and Braun is our best trade asset, arguably. It's a time to maximize return, not a time to be sentimental.
  5. And if we had known that we would start the 2015 season 7-18, we would have started the rebuild sooner, like the offseason prior. Seriously, any strategy can be second guessed. But I sure wouldn't throw away an entire rebuild, the whole point of which is to build a lasting contender, not just give ourselves one shot, just to have a chance to make the playoffs one year where 85-86 wins is enough to get in. Not that it really matters to the point, but in my opinion this team would likely be slaughtered in the postseason this year. Just don't have fresh top starters that can compete with the rest of the field.
  6. Not sure what your source is, but Braun has a 3.3 WAR this year and 2.9 WAR last year according to Fangraphs, combined 6.2. If you extended it out to 3, it would be a total of 7 WAR for Braun and 7.9 for Puig. I'm not saying Puig is the more valuable commodity in a Braun/Puig deal, but that's how easy it is to manipulate statistics to say what you want.
  7. Why not? You can pretty much flip a coin on replays. I mean I get sure, take a look when it's close and late, but no way they could have ever justified overturning that.
  8. Why? Lucroy is basically doing exactly what he did for us, so it's not unexpected or anything. And we got Gomez' best years, if the whole situation sucks for anyone, it's got to be the Astros above all others. I agree that rebuilding is tough and if we had managed to develop more than 1 ace in our farm in the last 25 years we probably wouldn't be in this position.
  9. Genuinely happy for Gomez. That's got to be a good moment for him. Not necessarily to beat the Brewers but winning home field for his team after a rough year.
  10. I read that list and thought, 'There's no way Jordan Zimmerman was in High A in 1999. He would have maybe been a teenager if that.' Then I looked it up and figured out it was a different Jordan Zimmerman.
  11. Either Perez just wanted to help out a former teammate, or he just pulled a July Villar.
  12. Villar is now 1 HR away from the very exclusive 20/60 club.
  13. 6th, 14th, 17th, 3rd, 5th, 14th, 8th, 3rd, 11th, 29th, 14th, 11th, 14th, 11th, 17th , 9th, 5th, 9th, 15th, 19th, is the offensive rankings in runs scored of every team Garza has faced this season. Average of 12th. I really don't think there is anything to see here. Like sveum said, slightly above average. That's probably a product of having the Cards and Cubs (3rd and 5th ranked offenses) in our division and I would expect that most of our pitchers have a relatively similar average OPS faced this year.
  14. My problem with this is that our payroll is going to be so low I don't think Garza's salary is holding up spending money on anything that could benefit the team. For instance, if we see an opportunity to obtain an international player for x amount, I don't see the front office or Attanasio blocking the deal just because Garza's salary is still on the books. We have a ton of financial flexibility right now. Garza's not going to prohibit the team from making any new financial commitments that make good baseball sense, so you might as well hold onto him and try to get some value back that's a tangible improvement to the system. Just my opinion, but here's how I look at it. Money saved is potentially useful later, no matter whether payroll is a problem or not. 12.5M is 12.5M (hopefully more invested), whether used now or in 5 years. We could buy a High A affiliate with that, or use it in 5 years to push the payroll to 125M and grab that FA at the deadline to try to put us over the top. No, Garza's salary isn't preventing anything, but it's still money that can be used later. Maybe that's too simplistic of a view, but I'd always rather save money when possible rather to pay for something that we really don't need.
  15. There's always a benefit in unloading salary, since that money can be reinvested in other areas either in the present or future. Garza's return, either now or next summer, will likely be nothing more than a fringe prospect. Now if you can't get anyone to take more than 3M or so of his salary on, I agree it's not worth it and you may as well hold and see what happen next summer. But if a team was willing to take on Garza this offseason and pay all or most of his remaining salary, I'd do it in a second, regardless of return. We all keep holding our breath for Garza to put together a dominant month and have his trade value spike, and I'd say he pretty much is what he is at this point. A veteran bottom of the rotation starter. He's not worthless, but he's also not valuable. If this was the NFL and we could cut him free and clear after 2016 and not owe him an additional penny, I guarantee we'd do it.
  16. Also to touch on his statement that people here just focus on the recent season rather than the entire body of work, even if it's true, of course they do. Recent performance is way more relevant in projecting future performance. Especially for veterans, the further you go back, the less relevant the data is, in my opinion. This is especially true now that Garza has 2 mediocre years back to back, not just one. Of course you do need to consider the entire body of work, but it's much more heavily weighted on recent performance. People weren't talking about getting top prospects for Braun a year ago. His current value is based heavily on the fact that he just put together a great, relatively healthy season. Yes, his entire career is considered, but he would have been worth significantly less a year ago, and trading him would have definitely required eating a substantial amount of money. Remember last August, when we were trying to give Kyle Lohse away? He wasn't worth the remaining few million on his deal to anyone just to take him off our hands for nothing. Had his entire body of work been the main consideration, of course somebody would have taken a flyer on him.
  17. He hasn't performed at his career norms since 2014. How can you call that the 'vast, vast majority of the last 4 years,' and how can you use numbers from 2-3 years ago and use them to project future performance, particularly for a pitcher who is almost 33?
  18. One of my favorite memories of Fernandez: he was pitching a gem against the Rockies winning 6-0 and Carlos Gonzalez hit a HR off him, and stopped to stare at it. Fernandez looked at Gonzalez....and smiled.
  19. That seems silly. What if a play is really close and they're looking at a bunch of different camera angles and splicing different shots together to get a good view? That takes more than a minute but just because you want it to go faster, they should just stop, even if it means getting the call wrong? How many reviews have even been finished in a minute this year? Even the obvious ones take at least a minute to overturn. The bolded is literally exactly what I said I'm against using replay for in the last sentence of my previous post. Yes, they should just stop. It's either indisputable from looking at it or it isn't. The Joyce play that Jericho mentioned is exactly the call I had in mind, but there are plenty that are obvious, that, IMO, is what it's for. As for the one minute, I'm not dead set on 60 seconds, make it 90 or whatever, but as long as the equipment is working, 60-90 seconds is more than enough time to correct an obviously bad call. How many seconds did it take to realize that Joyce blew the call to cost Gallaraga the perfect game? 5? The longest replay this year is 11 minutes. That is absolutely ridiculous. I would like to think most fans would like to see replay be a tool to provide a quick on the spot correction to a indisputable bad call, not a call that is only indisputable after conducting a thorough forensic analysis.
  20. I would like replays to be limited to 60 seconds at most, and if the people in New York are still trying to make a determination at that time, the monitors immediately shut off and the call automatically stands as called. Too often it seems we wait for them for minutes tediously going over every angle in slow motion. To me, by definition if you still can't overturn a call after 60 seconds, it's not indisputable. I believe the purpose and spirit of replay is to be able to correct an obviously bad call. Not to spend minutes splitting hairs and trying to piece together multiple angles and overturn a call because of what you think you see but aren't 100% sure.
