  1. As exciting as this season has been, I can't imagine how much more exciting this team would be with Abreu in our lineup. With or without Garza.
  2. Just out of curiosity, at what time does Wang 'project' to be major league ready? 2016, 2017? Where would he most likely wind up next season, Huntsville?
  3. Do you expect K-Rod to be perfect all year? Do you expect the bullpen to hold opponents to a .198 batting average year? Do you expect Estrada, Gallardo, Peralta and Lohse to be able to hold down respective ERA's of 2.87, 1.42, 2.56 and 2.38? Baseball is a game of peaks and valleys. We're at a peak right now. We'll hit a valley or two somewhere during the season. It's going great right now, enjoy it. It's not going to go this way all year, and how we rebound from it will say a lot more than what we are doing righ tnow. Last April 27th, the Rockies led the NL West and had a 3.5 game lead over the Dodgers. The Dodgers ended up 18 games ahead of them on the last day of the season. Texas led Oakland by 3.5 games and ended up 5.5 behind on the last day of the season. Kansas City had a game up on the Tigers and lost to them by 7 games. Could we win the division, sure we could. But talking about the race being over with 137 games left to play is crazy.
  4. And the Mets took a series from them in Atlanta. You can do the "who beat who" game all day. We're 18-6 against tough competition, best record in the league, so there really shouldn't be an argument against us. Although 1) I wouldn't argue AGAINST Atlanta either, just saying there's nothing wrong with us being there, and 2) It really doesn't matter.
  5. I heard some guys say with maybe 4-5 games left that they would prefer to just shut Rodgers down for the season and put him on IR because they didn't think they had a shot at the playoffs anyway (which I never agreed with). But I never heard of any Packer fan going into that game that actually wanted to lose that game against the Bears and give them the division.
  6. Yikes. That's terrible. I'm sure there's always one or two idiots in every sport that would rather not win the division/make the playoffs (or at least SAY they would rather) because they don't "think" they have a shot to win it all, but I can't identify with that train of thought at all when a precursor to winning it all in any sport is just getting in and making the playoffs. I definitely don't know of any Packer fans that felt that way last year. I'm sure there were some, but not wanting to win the division in the last game against your division rival is beyond my comprehension. I guess I can sort of understand a little better if you're 5-10 at that point and you just prefer better draft position, but I still don't like it. But to lose the division? Insane. I would guess that half of them are just telling themselves that to try to make it easier on themselves if they do indeed lose, but it still seems crazy to me.
  7. Totally off topic, but as a non-Packer who lives around Packer fans, I hate how they always say that it doesn't pay to make the playoffs if they don't think they can win the Super Bowl. Everyone I knew wanted them to lose to the Bears at the end of last season because they didn't have a team that was good enough to win the Super Bowl so it was pointless to make the playoffs anyway. I don't know what Packer "fans" you hang around, but this is completely untrue for myself and every Packer fan I hang around. Not one out of of the 50 or so I know wanted anything more than for them to beat the Bears. Any real NFL fan knows that any playoff team could make a run, like we did in 2010, so for anyone to root against their team because they don't think they have it in them to win it all is beyond dumb. Especially against a division rival. I can't imagine that any real Packer fan actually felt that way.
  8. Please tell me this is tongue-in-cheek. In 2007 we started 24-10, led the division by I think 8 1/2 games in June, and ended up barely finishing .500 as the Cubs won the division. Not saying that's what will happen again but saying a race can be over by the end of April is ridiculously underestimating how long the season this really is.
  9. How is that possible when the Tigers went what 36-5 to start the season that one year? I'm guessing he meant franchise record.
  10. I'd let him face a guy with a 3 or 4 run lead. He doesn't need to pitch a full inning. Just give him a batter. If he doesn't retire him, pull him. He gave up 6 runs his last outing. He's not going to lose confidence from that by giving up one baserunner. Conversely, if he retires one it could help.
  11. Something I've been curious about is if we can expect to see updates of certain page information that used to be updated on a regular basis. The salaries for instance are outdated and don't contain new roster additions this year, the power 50 hasn't been updated since 7/29/11, and the main page article still consists of a 2010 draftee interview. This isn't a complaint, I was more curious than anything. Since these are things that were once updated very regularly, I assumed that perhaps the person who used to mostly maintain these things no longer has the time to do so. It certainly won't keep me away from this site, I was just wondering if we could anticipate updates at some point or not.
  12. Once again, better to "freeze" his development for one year and have him in the Brewers system than let him continue to develop for the Pirates. And I have to imagine being on an MLB roster offers quite a few developmental advantages even if he isn't pitching in games very often (yet). I never said it wasn't. Just pointing out that if you pitch him rarely for 3 months and then "DL" him for the rest of the year, that's effectively what you have done.
  13. Seems pretty speculative to say Wang will just go on the 60 day DL after 90 days. I know the DL enforcement in MLB isn't the most strict, but especially for a guy who hardly ever pitches, that's a pretty blatantly obvious move unless he actually does something in a game. We're pretty much freezing his development for a year at this point.
  14. Really, you've only got to ride out 4 more months. After August 31st rosters expand and you're free to bring up all the help you need. The later it gets the more likely they are to stick with him. I'd like to see us eventually expand our trust in him a little more to the point of trusting him with a 4 or 5 run lead, even if it is with a short leash. I'm just not sure he'll log enough innings to save the rest of the pen otherwise. Should the pen really be overworked at mid-season it wouldn't be the worst idea to carry 8 relievers in July and August. I tend to forget Bianchi is even on the roster and Overbay and Weeks hurt by being limited to one position each. Neither is particularly valuable and that lack of versatility hurts -- a player like Taylor Green, for instance, could play anywhere in the infield besides short where Bianchi can play. Right now, the pen is being saved by starters that are going deeper into games than any team in MLB besides the Reds. I'm not sure we can count on that to last the entire season.
  15. I wonder if Hart burned any bridges here to the point where he would be anything of a distraction. It sounds like somewhere he liked being and somewhere where he would be open to coming back to, but his remarks about his teammates when leaving weren't all that complimentary.
  16. I think if we're looking to buy, the lack of top 100 prospect talent is definitely going to hurt. Trading an existing starter is an option, but it carries great risk, and most sellers probably prefer farm upside to MLB-ready talent. Pretty much any other buyer is going to be able to trump a prospect offer from us, which will leave mid-tier guys that might not be much of an upgrade from Reynolds anyway.
  17. I'm okay with the small ball, I just wish he would be a little less predictable about it. There's no longer any element of surprise to our squeeze/sac plays.
  18. You're the one who brought it up in the first place...if you're going to discuss a Fangraphs article on Ike Davis I would think you would at least direct us to which article that you're talking about. The reader can surely go to fangraphs and type in "ike davis", but the reader probably does not have time to sift through 20 articles referencing Ike Davis to find out which one you're referring to. As for the article, it's not exactly a rousing endorsement of Ike Davis. The comparisons to Mickey Tettleton and J.T. Snow show examples of 1st baseman having a rough year at 26 and then rebounding, but I don't think the average fan ever thought that was impossible for Davis anyway. In any event, if Snow is the ceiling for Davis, I don't think it's a huge loss. Since you think that management failed the fans and dropped the ball in not acquiring Davis, I'm just curious as to what you what have given up for Davis that would have beat the Pirates offer (obviously a little hard to judge right now without knowing who the PTBNL is). Thornburg? Fiers? It might have taken Thornburg, and I surely wouldn't think that anyone would think that Davis is a substantial enough upgrade from Reynolds to make that worthwhile.
  19. I'm happy we're not paying this guy $24M for the next 7 years to be our first baseman: 30 years old in 2 weeks, .200 BA, 2 HR, .671 OPS
  20. You posted exclusively about IKE hitting another grand slam and Morris going 0 for 5. I simply said it was silly to judge a trade based on such a ridiculously small sample of performances like that -- just like it would be silly for me right now to say "Whew, Ike is 0 for his last 9, sure dodged a bullet there." No one would know that you based it off anything else -- on page 1 you made some very vague reference to a Fangraphs article about Ike but gave no link and no real evidence of anything for anyone to know what you were talking about to agree or disagree with you.
  21. I just don't know how we are going to manage to hide Wang on the roster the entire season. He's a bit of a different kind of mop-up as he seems to be trusted only with large deficits (where it doesn't matter anyway), not with large leads. The catch-22 is that the better we are, the less that will happen and the less we will be able to use Wang. I'd be okay with an 8 man bullpen, but our current bench lacks versatility and has too many one-position players with Weeks and Overbay. That would need to be addressed first. Obviously you're not going to have him play out in the field, but they could always use Gallardo to pinch-hit. I've never understood why they almost never do, there have been some years where I felt he was a better option to hit than who we had left on the bench.
  22. I'm not too worried about this yet, but I agree that keeping Overbay over Francisco is baffling. It feels like the roster is never complete until there is at least one token aging veteran on it.
  23. Here's a question that maybe someone with a little better knowledge of the inner workings of the draft can help me out with. How much does the GM have to do with the draft? Do they have the final say on all picks? No picks? Just the early ones? Or not at all and this is the responsibility of the scouting director with the GM more of just a bystander of the process? I think there's definitely a big disparity in the recent level of success in free agency/internal extensions/trades and the draft, so I'm really curious about this.
