  1. I find it mildly annoying that referring to Jean Segura as a "rookie" is technically, incorrect.
  2. I can see that. But I actually think losing some of the "spaziness" is what has helped him. Don't get me wrong, he's still 100%, all effort, all energy. But I think the fact that he's been able to settle down and harness the energy at the plate a little bit more and not be so anxious has really been the key. It was never a question of his talent.
  3. Yeah yeah, it's the players making the hits, but it's time to give him some credit. No one really knew what to expect for an offensive dropoff when Sveum left. Not only did his offense score more runs than any other team in the NL, they did it in a year after Prince left. He's gotten every bit of the most out of guys like Gomez, Segura, Aoki, and Maldonado, while guys like Ramirez put up Pujols' - like numbers. He's gotten ridiculous numbers out of Betancourt. Somehow, with Ramirez and Hart both out, the offense hasn't missed a beat. The one guy he hasn't been able to figure out is Weeks, but I'm sure it hasn't been a lack of doing everything possible. Some guys aren't as coachable, and eventually will just need to figure it out themselves and execute.
  4. The team needed a night like this from Rickie, but Rickie needed a night like this so badly too, for his head. Hope it's turning around for him.
  5. Just remember that the Cardinals, Reds, and Pirates lose those free wins, too. Better than losing the Pirates to the AL -- decent team that we beat up on.
  6. Something Weeks isn't doing. It's so frustrating watching Rickie so often stand there looking at a first or second pitch fastball right down the middle of the plate and then once behind in the count, flailing badly at a pitch out of the strike zone as he end up striking out. I can't recall seeing a one time good hitter look this lost at the plate. It's almost as if he guesses wrong on what nearly every pitch will end up being. Exactly. Believe me, I don't think Betancourt has become a special player suddenly. But I'd be plenty happy with Weeks if he was JUST making pitchers pay for mistakes. He'll miss dead red fastballs at times.
  7. I'll be the first to admit that when we sent Hardy to Minnesota in 2009, I thought, "this is the best we could do?" It looked like we were acquiring a bust. The first couple seasons in Milwaukee did nothing to change that. I knew some fans raved about how high his ceiling was, but up until last year, it just looked like he was going to be a talented free-swinger who could offer you speed, great defense, and nothing else. Last year he had a "mini" breakout with a solid .768 OPS. Now that breakout looks like it might be coming full circle. For perspective, Michael Bourn was a 6 WAR player last year despite a modest .739 OPS because of his speed and good defense. If Gomez is one of the elite defensive CF's, steals 30 or so bases, and offers 20-25 HR power, he's a pretty scary valuable player. I think becoming more patient at the plate and losing the free-swinging ways has made an enormous difference. His walk numbers aren't up that much, but he's being much more patient, working deeper into counts, getting better pitches to hit, and hitting them.
  8. I actually think Weeks could be in serious danger of losing significant playing time if he does not get it together in May. Think of it this way. Suppose Yuni's new approach really is the key, and he continues to hit well in May. It's going to be hard to justify keeping him out of the lineup at that point, but you definitely can't justify playing him over Hart, Segura, or Ramirez. So Weeks would be the logical man out. Unlike last year with no other in-house options, the Brewers aren't likely to have the same kind of patience with Weeks while he hits .160 in the first half again, particularly if they are competitive. Better yet, Betancourt played mostly 2B last year with the Royals. I don't know how good he is defensively over there, but he wouldn't exactly be replacing a gold glover. Getting benched for Yuniesky Betancourt would be the ultimate fall from grace for any player. Weeks had better get it together soon. He's well beyond the point of getting excused on the "talent" card, particularly with his performance last year. He's an 8 year veteran who's numbers have been spiraling in the wrong direction for well over a year now.
  9. Can someone clarify what the difference is and give an opinion on which is more reliable? Sometimes they are frustratingly different. If you go by Fangraphs, Carlos Gomez took a big leap last year. If you go by base-reference.com, he was roughly just as valuable last year as in 2011. If you go by Fangraphs, Rickie Weeks had a down year last year, but not awful. If you go by baseball-reference.com, he was easily worse than an average AAA replacement. I realize WAR is just a measurement, but I'm surprised there would be so much disparity in some cases between the two.
  10. Just got home..great to see it's 9-2, just mildly annoyed that the first thing I see is a leadoff triple by Segura and the heart of the order can't pick him up. I've given up on Weeks. He is having the same first half all over again. He's 30, he is what he is by now. Its hard to see Weeks finishing with a better OPS than Segura, whoever made that bet.
  11. I agree that any extension should be discussed this offseason and not right now, but the fact that Segura isn't in the Tulo/Braun category is why I don't think it would take 8 years / $40MM to extend him. He's not an elite player, but he and Peralta are by far the best young players we have. There's not even a close third. Barring something unforeseen happening, we aren't going to have many other pre-arby players who are worthy of an early extension for quite a while. Assuming he stays healthy and looks decent this year, if we can sign an extension which would buy out a couple of FA years and would give us a discount for assuming the risk, I'd do it. I agree. I have no problem discussing an extension in the offseason. Just not right this minute like some people think we should.
  12. Why am I looking at this the completely wrong way? Because I don't share your viewpoint? Because I don't agree that the potential small savings of extending him versus later this year or next year now is worth the risk that he's performing at an unsustainable level? Can you give me one similar precedent of a player receiving an 8 or 9 year contract this early in his career? Yes, you obviously don't share my view point about what to expect from Segura the next 2 years. I have stated that already. It's not all about savings Adam. It's also about control and savings beyond the 5 years prior to FA. The Brewers and other teams who have a good young SS must be looking at that Alcedes Escobar deal and say to themselves man that's a no risk deal that I should explore; especially the Brewers; especially this early in pre arby. I also have high expectations for Segura. Again, can you give me one similar example of a multi-year deal this early in a player's career before more evaluation takes place?

  14. Whether or not you think he had one or both feet out of the box, it had better be pretty damn obvious to call it. It was not. You do not call a foul in the final seconds of an NBA game unless it's completely flagrant, you do not call a pass interference at the end of an NFL game unless it's very obvious. Same thing applies here.
  15. And in the end, I just want to punch Rickie even more than I did previously. And say swear words about this umpiring crew.
  16. Crap. Now it really will be all Rickie Weeks' fault if we lose.
  17. Well, you have full permission to swing for the fences, Yuni.
  18. Forgive him if he's unable to hit homers on command. Did I say I expected him to?
  19. First off, if security is as important to these pre-arby guys as you say, Segura isn't going to just blow off extension talks if he breaks out this year. Even if he does, he STILL can't go anywhere for 5 years. And even if security is important to these guys, why does that mean he's going to just sign a contract which gives us 3 team option years in his first 3 years of free agency? Has any MLB player ever done that? Yes he makes more contact, he does this, he does that, etc. etc. Segura is NOT the first, and again, I love Segura. People said these same things about Casey McGehee. Yes, Alcides Escobar just signed an extension with the Royals. They also waited for him to show 3+ years of MLB time. You are proposing an even bigger contract after 3+ weeks. Using the logic you presented shouldn't Alcides have been demanding much more than what he got since they waited so long?
  20. Rough night for Jean. Knew it was going to happen eventually.
  21. Glad to see Aoki showing some patience. Just get that tying run on.
