  1. The frustrating thing about Roenicke (to me as someone who thinks he has numerous shortcomings as a manager) is that he's pretty much untouchable for awhile yet. Doug and Mark will remind us that we went to the NLCS in 2011, and he's got a built in injury card to play this year which will buy him until at least the end of 2014, even if this year is a chaotic failure. People call out Macha for being boring, and it's unfortunate that he can't relate to his players better, but I'd like to see how many wins Roenicke could have squeezed out of a team with baseball's worst rotation in 2009. I'm guessing easily less than the 80 that Macha got.
  2. I think going into last year with Greinke, Marcum, and Yo at the top of the rotation, expectations were certainly more than to have "average" starting pitching. Even after Greinke was gone, it took unsustainable performances from Fiers, Rogers, and Peralta to end up at the average mark. I expect the rotation to rise, but the multitude of question marks after Yo/Lohse (I expect Yo to improve) makes me doubt they'll be average again this year, which is what they'll need if we're going to be a playoff team. Unfortunately, as the rotation rises, the bullpen is likely to fall a bit as they're unlikely to sustain what they've done so far this year.
  3. What? We got 6 years of a potential star cost-controlled shortstop. We also got a couple other "potential" pitching pieces. The Angels got 2 months of a pitcher, didn't even make the playoffs, and lost the pitcher for nothing. I'm stunned that anyone could argue that we didn't destroy the Angels in this trade.
  4. Yet dead last in team ERA, runs and earned runs allowed, and batting average against. Maybe a consequence of the lack of walks is that we are leaving too many hittable pitches over the plate.
  5. I think you're on to something, and I'll take it a step further. I wonder how Rickie feels about being the only black player on the team? Yes, he is 30 and there could be some age decline but at 30 I would not expect this much age-related decline so quickly. I just wonder how much he enjoys playing in Milwaukee without any other black players on the team. His decline has also corresponded with the number of black players on the team. 2013 - Weeks 2012 - Weeks, Morgan 2011 - Fielder, Weeks, Morgan, Hawkins 2010 - Fielder, Weeks, Cain, Dickerson, Hawkins, Jeffress 2009 - Fielder, Weeks, Cameron, Hall, Bourgeois, Patterson I'm going to have to assume this is tongue in cheek/sarcastic. There's no way you could have just possibly "forgotten" about the existence of Segura, Betancourt, Figaro, etc.
  6. So is it a Kranitz problem for not getting the most out of the talent he has, or a Melvin/scouting problem for not providing enough talent? I'm very frustrated with the performance of our rotation -- I don't see the hype about Peralta so far, Gallardo and Estrada are clearly underachieving, and Fiers has been essentially forgotten. We are, once again, dead last in the NL in pitching as far as runs allowed and ERA, batting average against, you name it. We have a major pitching problem. I don't know what the solution is. While I'm not going to claim this is our most talented pitching staff ever, it's very frustrating that the Cardinals can seemingly employ a revolving door of pitchers and not miss a beat, while we are at the opposite end of the spectrum. I can't help but feel that a more competent pitching coach would get more out of our pitchers.
  7. Like others, no one is "untouchable" to me, I just consider that limiting yourself. However, my "would have to be blown away" list would include Braun, Segura, Lucroy, and Gomez. In a selling situation, I definitely wouldn't refuse to trade Lohse, or even Gallardo. I'm just not sure that we really have any good fits after Gallardo for a sell. There's no one in the pen worth anything of value. Lohse and Ramirez could possibly have value, but with their backloaded deals I'd be surprised if we didn't have to eat at least a pretty good portion of their remaining contracts in a trade. Unless Hart just kills it for 2 months, he's probably not going to have a ton of value as a rental. Under the new CBA, I'm not sure whether or not Hart is in line to bring back compensation -- if so, that pick might be worth more than anything we get for him in late July. I feel really good about most of the core we have to build around in the lineup -- Braun, Gomez, Segura, and even Lucroy. I think we might have 3 elite players in the lineup with the first 3. The problem is that we have so, so far to go with pitching, and I don't feel we're really close there yet. We do need desperately to add high ceiling pitching prospects. I know people want to be excited about Thornburg, Hellweg, Pena, Nelson, Jungmann, Bradley, etc, but frankly, this is not a list full of high ceiling guys, and I'd be happy to end up with a couple back of the rotation starters and some relief help among the bunch.
  8. On the plus side, Weeks is becoming a perfect fit to give infield grounder drills to the rest of the team.
  9. I'm not saying Peralta is a bum, but the fact that he is our best pitching prospect in 6 years is just very, very sad.
  10. The disparity between our RISP hitting and our opponents must be staggering.
  11. I like how we apparently find it necessary to get Gomez days off from time to time, but not Weeks.
  12. Poor Segura, Braun, and Gomez, having to be a part of this trainwreck.
  13. Agreed...he didn't get a lot of help, but let's call a spade a spade, he was awful today. Not excusing Braun's mistakes, but pitchers are going to have to deal with that sort of thing, and part of the skillset of a pitcher is their ability to maintain composure on the mound and continue with what they need to do and not let it affect the rest of the inning.
  14. Can we just DFA Weeks? I'm not even kidding anymore. He's horrendous.
  15. After today we are going to again lead the NL in runs allowed. This is why I'm calling for Kranitz' head, even though it might not be all on him. Worst bullpen in MLB last year. Now at this point in the year, worst pitching staff in the NL. And we even got him Lohse. Is this sort of pitching performance acceptable for a pitching coach?
  16. Can someone please again explain to me how Rick Kranitz still has a job here? If we have a decent pitching staff we're a playoff team. There isn't a pitcher on our team right now that I'm not nervous to see out there.
  17. The Cardinals have guys like Shelby Miller and Lance Lynn. We have Mike Fiers and Hiram Burgos.
  18. Too bad Lucroy runs with a piano on his back, otherwise it's tied up.
  19. He's got some redeeming values defensively, but he's not nearly as good as people seem to think he is. He's actually pretty bad at throwing out basestealers, doesn't appear to call a great game, and makes his fair share of mistakes. I've heard he good at framing pitches.
  20. Do other teams just somehow know where every single ball we hit is going to go?
  21. If he gets tagged here, this is the new revised guide for determining whether or not John Axford can enter the game: Q1: Is the deficit of the game at least 10 runs either way? Q2: Is every other pitcher on the roster physically unable to pitch? Q3: Is the opponent a college team? Q4: Is the college team Division II or lower? If Ron can answer yes to all these questions, he can go ahead and put Axford in the game.
  22. If you've looked through these game threads, you'll notice that I complain about Lucroy all the time.
